YONCOPIN 1977 Centenary College of Louisiana Shreveport, Louisiana A Dedication Dr. WoodrowPate THE MODERN YOUTH What sermons and sentiments they have aroused, what controversies in home, school, and church — this topic has been the subject for heated debate between conservative and radical. Constantly there comes a word of disapproval or criticism of the youth of the college world from some one who does not understand or appreciate the qualities beneath the strange new garb of a strange new age. Again there arises some champion of youth, some one who sees in the exuberance and energy of the boy and girl of today unlimited possibilities for great accomplishments. Is the critic of the new age a fogy so immersed in his own interests and his own creeds that he is unable to perceive the existence of true values in modern college life? Is he wholly the victim of prejudice and narrowness? Or is he correct? After all, is there any goal toward which the boy and girl of today are moving in their mad rush of life and activity? Is there anything definite and certain and unwavering in a world of constant revolution? Is the super-energy of our age being wasted in pleasure or is it being directed to the end of achievement? The question is con sidered continually, pro and con. Invariably men of pregress come to the conclusion that the modern college world, like the modern world at large, isn ' t so bad after all, and that there is much in it which is worth while. In fact, the decision is so nearly unanimous that an interested investigator is likely to be influenced by the power of statistics and to remark with conviction, It must be so. And indeed, it must. Anyone who approaches the question without bias and without the jealousy which age so often feels towards Youth is most likely to see that the modern boy and girl are worthy products of an age which plays hard, works hard, fights hard, and age in which energy finds outlet not only in riotous pleasure but also in highly specialized industry. The word efficient is applied to the modern world. It is neither the cold efficiency of a machine in which the quality of individuality is lacking nor the unwise efficiency of the practical man who disregards the element of personality, but rather the efficiency of living that marks the modern youth. He holds the creed that life was made for living and the worth while philosophy that work and pleasure, industry and relaxation, endeavor and recreation are but parts of a great whole. Perhaps there is less theology in modern life, but no one can deplore the substitution of good deeds for kind thoughts, and no one can regret the passing of a system of theorizing in favor of a stystem of constructive living. Action and activity have taken the place of idle meditation. There is less time for men to think of themselves and their inner emotions. Science has invaded the realm of the metaphysical. Man is learning greater emotional control as he learns the causes and results of emotional experience. The pace of life is being accelerated by outward causes, and the man who keeps pace with his day must be alert and energetic. Is the college youth going to be able to step from the doors of Alma Mater and help shoulder the world? Is his training adequate? Is he worthy? And the answer may be formulated in another question: What greater training could he have than life in college? For colleges are not isolated. They are little worlds in which the problems and perplexities of the outside world are reflected in miniature proportions. They are cross sections of a great pattern. They are bays which branch off from the sea of life, protected from the greater storms of the deep but which hold the same waters and are drawn by the same suns. Colleges are not preparatory for life; they are life. So we too come to the conclusion that the college boy and girl have the possibilities, even the probabilities for great achievements. Theirs are the qualities of strong, fearless youth; theirs are attributes of unprejudiced, unhampered living. In them lies the hope of humanity, and that hope, we believe, is well founded. The usual practices associated with working on a newspaper are strictly observed. Sometimes they are even fol- lowed. Work starts on Thursday when a staff meeting is called to plan the next week ' s paper. Okay, page one is going to be an article on computers. We had a com- puter article last week. No, that was a calculator article. Well, what about the week before? That was about statistics. Over the next few days, the courageous staffers research and interview, write and tell inside jokes. I ' d like an appointement with the Dean, please. I ' m sorry, but he won ' t be in until next week. But it ' ll be too late then! On Tuesdays, they start the actual work on the paper. But the real fun is on Wed- nesday nights when the staffers are found diligently working away. Hey! Who stole my pig sticker? No, that was 45 spaces, not 54. Somebody make up a head for this thing. How about ' Dewey Wins ' ? I need a ' much. ' When are we going to order a pizza? Wait a min- ute. You can ' t say THAT in print. Channel Three who? , And at about three a.m. Thursday morning comes the 100 mile round-trip to Coushatta, Louisiana, where the CON- GLOMERATE is printed. Then on Thursday afternoon the students find lit- tle stacks of CONGLOMERATES placed all over campus. It is at this time that they begin preparations for the many activities that the choir is involved in during the year. The main event for the Fall semester is RHAPSODY IN VIEW concert which is performed in Novem- ber. During Interim the Choir toured 10 days in several Texas and Louisiana towns performing at different places along the way. The members of the choir contribute a great deal of their time and efforts in rehearsing for six television shows and regular programs performed in Brown Chapel. Many of the proceeds from the Choir activities will go to subsidize their summer European tour, which will visit such countries as Germany, Austria, Switz land, France and Belgium. The Choir officers are Dub Kar- riker, President; Pat Finch, Vice Pres.; Grace Riggin, V. Pres.; Joy Sherman, Sec; and Janet Mayo, Treasurer. Sec- tion leaders are Donna Hardin, Debbie Staples, Dana Ellis, and Bob Peacock. The accompanists are Cindy Elkins and Susan Patterson. zer- Jess Moore and Susan Patterson i 149 The River Towne Players of Marjorie Lyons Playhouse are some of the busiest people on campus. Besides the five major pro- ductions given annually, the theatre majors also are required to participate in at least two Demonstration Laboratory (student directed-acted scenes or one-act plays) presentations each semester. In addition to their regular schedule, MLP revived the spring production of Summer and Smoke to take to the American College Theatre Festival at LSU in Baton Rouge in October. At the festival RTP was awarded a special citation for Technical Excellence. During Interim this year the Theatre Department journeyed to New York City for two weeks to view current major productions. The year ' s climax is the Annual RTP-CHOR softball game followed by an Awards banquet where students are commended for outstanding acting, directing, technical and creative achieve- ments. Actually they are to govern over the dorm life and make sure the college rules are being enforced. As for the Resident Assistants, or RA ' s, they are to keep noise to a minimum on their floor, counsel when needed, be there in a time of emergency, and always have a smile for the people on their floor. The RA and Dorm Councils are also the clos- est ties that the students have with the Dean of Students. So if you should ever be walking down the hall and hear Sh! The Judicial Board is made up entirely of elected students with Dr. Hancock as faculty Advisor. The group tries dorm council appeals, and cases such as liquor in Crumley Gardens, or drag races in Rotary parking lot. The Student-Faculty Discipline Committee is a selected group and tries more serious cases, or appeals from the Judicial Board. The Honor Court is separate from the other groups, and its members are chosen by first application, then selec- tion. They try students who have been reported for violating the Honor Code of the school. Each serves an important part in allowing students to govern them- selves, but members of these groups sometimes feel that it is an easy way to lose friends! 157 § « The Epsilon chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta was formed on the Centenary campus this past year. A chapter can be formed when three of the Sociology professors on the campus receive their PhD. AKD is an honorary Soci- ology society for students with at least a 3.0 GPA and a mini- mum of 10 hours of Sociology courses. The Social Science Club is also new this year and consisted of interested Sociology, Psychol- ogy, Economics, and Political Science students. It broadcasts 24 hours a day on weekends and 20 hours a day on weekdays. KSCL ' s musical for- mat consists of classical, contemporary jazz, progressive country, and rock. The station is located on the third floor of the SUB and has a reception area of fifty square miles. The Centenary Stage Band, directed by Bill Causey provides entertainment and spirit for all of the Gents home games. Their rendition of the Fight Song has often gotten the fans to their feet in support of the team, and students also enjoy In the Mood, Shaft, and, of course, The Budweiser Song. The Chamber singers is a choral group under the auspices of the School of Music. The group gives two recitals per semester and is composed only of music majors. They per- form music from all periods with string and brass ensembles, harpsichords, piano accompaniment, and a cappella. During the past years they have been establishing a reputation as one of Shreveport ' s finest choral groups. The Centenary chapter of the American guild of Organists attended organ recitals in El Dorado, Houston, and Dallas during the 1976-77 year. They participated in choral work- shops at the college and throughout the city. There are monthly meetings, trips to churches in the area to study organ construction and maintenance. The members of this group are preparing for church work as professional musicians. Opera Workshop is designed to give music students a real- istic experience in practice and performance of opera litera- ture. Under the professional direction of Dr. Mary Beth Armes, the Opera Theatre this year presented Puccini ' s Gianni Schicchi. Other activities included presentations of a program of operatic arias at Shreveport ' s Red River Bevels. s t ■A • 1 . . J fu i! The Catholic Student Commu- nity is made up of college students from campuses in the area, with Father Graef as the sponsor. Dur- ing the past year, members of the group participated in several retreats, discussion groups, coffee houses, and mass on Sunday eve- ning. The Canterbury Club also had speakers and discussion groups and was led by Nan Overmeyer. The house was always open for studying purposes. The Baptist Student Union, led by Cletice Sipes, has participated in a World Ministry series this year. MR lUCEN 31 189 SPORTS 190 As the sports section of the YONCOPIN was being created it had to be decided what was most important, most significant, what really happened in sports this year at Centenary that made it a better place to be? The decision — through both intramural and varsity athletics we as students of Centenary are given the oppor- tunity for a great deal of self expression. Sports are physical exer- cise, mental exercise, but more imporatnt they exercise our emtions. Whether it is an obscenity yelled at the ref. or at a for- getful teammate, whether you are a player or an onlooker, whether you are victorious or defeated it doesn ' t really matter because you have had the opportunity to express your feeling towards your school or brotherhood or even your dormitory — for you see, by right of human nature we cling to one another and through sports we are allowed to express our unification. BA TTLE OF Tennis With the beginning of a new school year came the usual fall rains of Louisiana so the Centenary netters had much more to battle than fierce opponents. Rain continued to fall, canceling most of the scheduled matches and tournaments and leaving the Gents and Coach Causey in a state of confusion. Fortunately, Spring does follow the winter months and the tennis team is looking forward to a busy and worthwhile spring season, with approximately twenty matches and tournaments scheduled. The real struggle started in 1972 with the passage of an act of Congress stating that women should have equal opportunity to participate in varsity athletics on college cam- puses receiving federal funds. Even though it is a slow process the struggle continues and may be eliminiated soon. Through such areas as a grievance board and petitions the needs of women are and will be met by Centen- ary. Progress is on its way, and very soon women ' s intercollegiate sports will be a part of Centenary Athletics. One of the main intercollegiate sports at Centenary is baseball led by Coach Evans. With a short season consisting of 12 games in the Fall and sixty-one games in the Spring, the team is con- stantly on the road. All home games this year were played at SPAR Stadium with many returning faces and excellent new players, the team is looking forward to another winning season. • ... Xf Jim Windom, Rick Alwater, Mike Hainsfurther, Jerry Rowland, Don Hashman, Brent Lutz, Danny Moyers, Dell Bergeron, Mark Hargis, Mark Dunny, Paige Hudson, Rick Davis, Tommy Kox, Mike Young, Brad Graham, Ken Naff — Manager, Tom Brummer, Leslie Jones, Larry Haas, Bill Evans, Bill Schmidt, Jim Halgas, Wayne Rohlf ing, Kirk Tolson, Robert Mosby, Coach Evans. ■ ■ , .... « .. l.—JIfci jRS ® 1 ' 4 ' ; , . j | . . v . _ I •jar 31 i TSf 3 -«— r. This past fall they had eight matches two being played at home and six away. The biggest event of the team ' s year was attendance by four team members at a tournament in Mexico. You could say that they are international swingers. THE GOLF TEAM — From Left to Right: Larry Shannahan, John Mon- telpre, Hal Sutton, Dave Atkins, Paul Summfelt, Ross Beamer, and Jim Don- ner. Centenary ' s cross country team is only in its fifth year and already it has taken its share of trophies in big school competi- tion. Last fall the team took second place in Big Sandy Texas and took many third place honors from schools all over the Louisiana and Texas area. Although the cross country team has had its share of injuries this spring they are looking forward to a competitive year. SOCCER Centenary ' s soccer team is getting better and better all the time. Last fall the winning season of the team built much confi- dence which will help the team to grow and build towards excel- lence. The team has recruited many new members this year and under the leadership of their co-captains Dave Barnett and Clin- ton Schmidt will certainly have a good spring season. THE SOCCER TEAM — From Left to Right: Dave Barnett, Dean Sawyer, Clinton Schmidt, Stu Park, Manash Sarcar, Henry Mata, Saad. Ali, Alfonso McLean, Jesus Alvarez. BASKETBALL With many strikes against them, the loss of Robert Parish, a new head basket- ball coach, only six returning players from last year, and many new faces to the squad the 1976-77 Centenary Basketball Team still gave their opponents a run for their money. It was a year of regrouping and rebuilding for the young team. The team was led by Bobby White in scoring, John Pitts in rebounds. Bill Schmidt in steals and Al Barns in blocked shots. The other two main starters Kevin Starke and Aaron steered the team in excellent ball-handling skills for freshmen new to the college basketball scene. When the starters weren ' t in the game Coach Wal- lace had a strong bench to pick from consisting of Rudy Mann, Walter Louis, Chris Cummings, Leroy Crayton and Robbie Senn. The season started out slow but as the players got accustomed to playing together things began picking up. Several games in which the Gents were the underdogs, they came out on top. Many of the games they lost were only by three points or less. Senior John Pitts will be missed next year, but with the returning ten players and Beau Jackson and George Lott waiting in the wings to play, the Gents ' opponents better watch out for them in 77-78. With the addition of male cheerleaders, and the presence of an extra rowdy crowd and very spirited coach the Gents motivation hit its peak in ' 76- ' 77. The consequences — technicals, irritated referee ' s, but more important a common bond of loyalty developed among the supporters of Centenary Athlet- ics. The feeling part of Centenary Students surely reflects affection for the Gent teams and our alma mater. They can be fun or very vicious and at one time or another have been both on our campus. Every group has their most important rival or the ultimate goal of a particular championship, each person strives for an individual goal or specific accomplishment, every group has followers and players and this makes Centenary intramurals a worthwhile program. Intramurals are organized by two groups, the Men ' s Intramural Council and the Women ' s Recreation Association. These groups are the governing bodies of intramurals. They organize games, obtain equipment, and help enforce the rules of the various sports. Since intramurals are such a big part of campus these peo- ple are kept very busy. Through their organization intramurals are able to function quite sufficiently. Intramurals — they kept Centenary students leading a busy and active life. They keep Centenary students out of trouble? Well, almost.
