While witnessing the end of the old, students were also exposed to the progressive outlook of 1975 โ a con- troversial speaker, a rising star and a woman enlight- ened enough to relinquish her traditional roles for her career. Bob Hope wrapped up the 150th anniversary celebra- tion with a performance at Hirsch Coliseum on October 31st. Sponsored by the Alumni Association, Hope ' s show, plagued by acoustical problems, was geared toward the middle-aged conservative population of Shreveport. Student reaction was mixed. Former comedian, Dick Gregory, talked to students as the first semester Forums speaker. His topics ranged from the 26 families to youth. SGA sponsored Willis Allen Ramsey, a progressive country musician. His hour-long mellow perform- ance was preceded by Heart ' s Island. Marion Stephenson, vice-president and general man- ager of NBC Radio, spoke to various classes the week of October 26. She talked of trends in radio today and rel- ated topics in the fields of advertising and the news media. โ โขโ .โ โ โ ' โ Choir Begins Superdome Ceremonies , u v f โ โ ' %l Ii fi i Tm i i nn mp - ? The res- toration and upkeep of the building, as well as the exhibition of paint- ings, is the gift of the Meadows family. Thirty Saudi Arabians came to Centenary this year to learn the English language under the aus- pices of the English Lan- guage Service. The Sau- dis were housed in Rotary, which was remodeled to accommo- date them. They attempted to adjust to the completely different lifestyle here at Centen- ary โ many customs and habits which were for- eign to them. ' $ ' ft ' ' ' ' โขโ ' . ยฃju h : ions I Vannie Edwards returned to Centenary this year as gymnastics coach. He was coach and manager of U.S. Olympic teams in gymnastics in 1964, 1968, and 1972. His qualifications and experience attracted many stu- dents to gymnastics. Robert Parish, Centenary ' s nation- ally known basketball player, played in the Pan Am games of 1975. He was captain of the U.S. team and was leading scorer in the gold medal game against Cuba. For the first time in the history of SGA elections, an election was postponed because it was contested. The freshman elections were voided and reheld the next week. The proceedings raised many questions about Centenary ' s electoral process. Each new play was a new beginning for the director, tech crew, and actors of Mar- jorie Lyons Playhouse. With each show a different set of obstacles was presented to the people who attempted to bring pro- fessionalism to the stage at Centenary. This year ' s season began with 1776 and continued with J.B. and Member of the Wedding in the fall. Dames at Sea and Summer and Smoke rounded out the season. K. J MLP โ Prof essionalism at Centenary โข I ' % The traditional All-Campus Weekend, sponsored by the SGA, was expanded this year. The new All-Campus Week began on Wednesday night with a movie in the SUB. A picnic in Crumley Gardens was held on Thursday. Friday ' s events included the Beer-Bicycle Race, All-Campus Review, and Ice- Skating in the evening. Hardin Games and a dance at Prog- ressive Men ' s Club closed out the week of fun on Saturdav. v ift M KigsjS ML ' . ย - mm ; f :, Parties There is always a party to relieve the tension of constant school- work. The parties shown in these pictures are a Halloween party, the traditional Kappa Sig P J. Party and KA Jungle Party, and a TKE dance at The Nest. Whether a small gathering at the Carousel or a large fraternity formal, parties are always wel- come on the Centenary campus. v r FEATURES Brad Davis Division Editor 1976 was the first year that women were admitted into Omicron Delta Kappa. The season opened with four consecutive victories, but then an upset came as the University of South Alabama squeaked by the Gents. The Gents then soundly defeated such foes as the University of Texas and Utah State before being edged out in the finals of the All-College tournament. Later in the season the Gents lost a shocker to Northeast La. None of the Gents ' losses had been by more than two points. After five more victories, the team travelled to Las Vegas to take on their top ten ranked team, and unfortu- nately the Gents never recovered from a flurry of first half turnovers and were soundly defeated. The Gents, coached by Larry Little and Riley Wallace, were perhaps the most underrated 19-4 basketball team in the nation. Held in relative obscurity by an NCAA ruling, the Gents were still one of the premier teams in the nation, staying in the AP Top Twenty for well over a month. The Centenary JV had its problems this year. Although at some times, individuals looked brilliant, the team never seemed to work together as a unit. Playing an abbreviated schedule, the JV improved with every game, and toward the end of the season were beginning to play with the poise of a winner. 143 Robert Parish Centenary ' s own superstar, Robert Parish could very possibly be the best ballplayer ever to wear the Centenary uniform. A native of Shreveport, he holds the Gents ' record for career scoring with over two thousand points, total points for one game, fifty, career rebounds, rebounds in a single game, rebounds in a single sea- son, and in rebound average. Robert has scored twenty or more points in 60 of 103 games, he has 15 or more rebounds in 65 games and blocks around four shots a game. Although the NCAA tried to hold Parish in obscurity he has come to the attention of THE SPORTING NEWS, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, CBS, and NBC. Last summer he was picked to captain the gold-medal win- ning Pan-Am team. Almost certain to be a number one draft pick after this season, Robert Parish will leave behind a legacy of greatness at Cen- tenary. 144 The two senior starting guards for the Gents complement and balance each other beautifully. Quarterback Barry McLeod holds the Centenary record for most assists as well as averaging around twelve points a game. Nate Bland is third on the team in assists as well as averaging twenty points per game. Snake has amazingly fast hands and often steals the ball away from unsuspecting opponents. Backing up McLeod and Bland are two fine reserves, Leroy Hoggs and Dick Brown. Hoggs is a sophomore and is one of the quickest Gents on the court. He connects on 51% of his shots from the field. Freshman flash, Dick Brown earned his place on the varsity this year as a result of his great ball-handling ability. Although only seeing spot action, he was second on the team in assists. The guards for the JV team included: Robbie Senn, a sopho- more who saw some varsity action; Wayne Abreu, a fresh- man; Leroy Crayton, a fresh- man; and Paul Patton, also a freshman. 145 Leroy Crayton Junior Varsity Paul Patton Junior Varsity Wayne Abreu Junior Varsity 146 Robbie Senn Junior Varsity Leroy Hoggs Varsity Dick Brown Varsity 147 Four forwards fought it out for the two starting spots on the Centenary varsity. Junior Al Barnes started every game and his exciting, spidery style of play thrilled Centen- ary fans while distracting opposing players. The other starting assignment was alter- nated between Cal Smith, a hustling senior coming back from last year ' s devastating knee injury, John Pitts, a jun- ior who had a hot and cold season, and Bobby White, last year ' s JV phenom who came into his own the last few games of the season. The forwards for the JV include: Walter Louis, fresh- man; Dwight Myers, fresh- man; and Sam Roberts, soph. For the varsity, one man had a special problem, Welton Brookshire, Parish ' s back-up man. Welton hustled and played well in the games in which he saw action. These fall games are played with entirely different rules and allow the team to be thoroughly prepared for the spring season which consists of approximately thirty games. Nine lettermen returned from last year ' s fine team, and they hope to carry on Centenary ' s winning tradi- tion against such foes as Tulane, Grambling, and the University of Arkansas. Soccer The Centenary Soccer team, coached by Glen Evans, finished their fall season with a winning record once again. Although smaller in size than last year ' s six and one team, the Gents proved themselves a worthy opponent to any team they met on the field. Aided by several international team members, the team ' s offense seemed almost unstoppa- ble at times, twice scoring as many as seven points in a single game. Even in losing efforts, the team ably represented the college with their hustling determi- nation. 160 161 Cross Country Dr. Wayne Hanson coaches the Cross Country Track Team as they represent the college against such foes as LSU, Louisiana Tech, and Rice. The team participates in cross country meets during the fall while taking part in various track meets during the spring. Although this is basically a sport for individuals and the records they can set, the team consistently supports each other in their quest for victory. 162 Fencing Lester Ewing and Bob Maxwell are Centenary ' s rep- resentatives in the area of fencing. Starting as a few strategically placed posters, this team, now in its first year, has competed in several matches this year with the Gents making a good showing in all. Les- ter Ewing has been given a special honor as he has been invited to participate in the Junior Olympics. If the present trend continues, fencing may develop into one of the most popular sports on campus. 163 Tennis Four players return from last year ' s team to compose the 1976 squad of Centenary netters. A heavy schedule of nineteen meets and one tournament with thirteen different opponents from February through April has been set to occupy the team ' s time. If past efforts are any indication of future results, Coach Bill Causey ' s team should have an impressive total of victories at the season ' s end. Coach Bill Causey 164 I H ยซi 8r , L %. The Zeta Grey team took first place in volleyball, followed by James I, Chi Omega (Alpha) and Chor. Fac- ulty I dominated tennis, taking first and second in singles competition and second and fourth in doubles. The Chi Omega representatives took first place in the doubles competition. The spring competition got underway with basketball at the beginning of the year. 166 167 Men ' s Intramurals As fall competition drew to a close a total of twenty- one teams had participated in the various competi- tions. The Kappa Sigma team led in the race for total points, taking second place in football, fourth in Cross Country, first and second in table tennis singles and first and third in doubles; they also swept the field in pool, taking the first three positions. The faculty team was a close second, bolstered by their first place fin- ishes in both football and volleyball. The GDI I team was third in the point standing with a third place fin- ish in volleyball and football and a second in cross country. The KA team took fourth place in volleyball and football to hold the fourth place position in the point standings. The Theta Chi ' s were established as the fifth place team on the strength of their first place finish in cross country. Among other teams competing were the Tibetan Mys- tery Army, Grey Ghosts, Horny Demons and the Rotary Roaches. โขr j k 168 169 r MHHHH 170 171 โขmmmmmmmmmr cj โข ยซi i ' i ' 1 L J 1 v .r i H ORGANIZATIONS Susan Hiett Division Editor Student Government Association The Student Government Association is the governing body for the entire student body.
