CENTENARY COLLEGE CHOIR Beginning with its traditional training camp at Hodges Gardens in early September, the Centenary College Choir launched a banner year of television and travel representing Shreveport and Centenary College from the steamy swamps of South Louisiana to the ice-bound plains of Nebraska. Starting with fifteen new faces in the total forty-five, the choir gained continuing prestige with its debut concert, Rhapsody in View staged for the first time in the new Shreveport Civic Theater. The year con- tinued with a series of monthly television shows on KTBS-TV sponsored by Southwestern Electric Power Company, and a featured role in the weekly broadcasts of the National Protestant Hour. The annual mid- semester tour was highlighted this year with a special performance at the National Convention of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in New Orleans. In March, the group spent a week touring the Great Plains with special concerts at MacPherson College in Kansas and at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Along with its tours, the choir presented seasonal concerts at Christmas and Easter and will wind up the year with a Songs by Summer Starlight presentation at Hodges Gardens. On all its concert tours, the choir was greeted with packed audiences and favorable comment. In the words of Margaret MacDonald, Amusements Editor of The Shreveport Journal, As long as the choir brings back such high praise for the college and community, both can be assured of a bright future. Shreveport ' s Singing Ambassadors have given freely of their time and talent to perform an invaluable service to Centenary College by presenting an image of clean-cut intelligence both at home and on the road. 63 64 t B Phi Beta is a national professional fra- ternity for women whose interests lie in the fields of drama, speech and music. AVO Alpha Psi Omega is a national honorary drama fraternity, whose Delta Iota cast was founded at Centenary in 1961. Membership is based on a point system, the points being gained by participat- ing in all areas of theatre work. Sponsors of Alpha Psi Omega are Mr. Orlin Corey and Miss Ruth Alexander. 65 on oie ur More than a mere building, the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse is a home — a way of life for the Jongleurs. Miss Alexander and Mr. Musselman find no job too big or too small to fit into their busy schedules. Everyone works, but they keep smiling. The creation of theatrical genius nestles its head on parents Orlin and Irene Corey. DR. JEKYLL AND Carolyn Garison relates a chilling tale of murder to avid listeners John Goodwin, Gary Ball, and Carol Thomas. ff In previous years the Readers ' Theater productions have made ample use of props and costumes. For this presentation Miss Alexander dressed her cast formally and relied on the voices of Dick Johnson, Charles Park, John Goodwin, Gary Ball, Carol Thomas, Carolyn Garison, and Alan Shaffer, who read the part of Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde, to create the sharp, cold atmosphere. DOI A group of friendly shepherds entertain Don Quixote with a rustic dance. MR. HYDE Mar itornes, played by Sandra West, offers the inn- keeper his sword. The Jongleurs were privileged to give birth to the world premier of Arthur Fauquez ' s adaptation of Don Quixote. This is the second of Mr. Fauquez ' s plays to have its beginning at the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse. His animal fable, Reynard the Fox, mushroomed from a Centenary College production to international tour material. The final script of Don Quixote will be published as it was performed by the Jongleurs including pictures of that production. QUIXOTE Don Quixote surveys the world from his brave charger, Roscinante. From adventurous idealist to practical housekeep- er to roguish cut-throat ... all give life to Don Quixote in the persons of Alan Shaffer as Don Quixote, Dorothy Bradley as Dona Belisa, and David Kingsley as Gines. YERMA Juan (Charlie Looney) denies what Yerma deserves. Victor (John Goodwin) offers what Yerma desires. Mr. Donald Musselman made his directing debut at the Marjorie Lyons with Garcia Lorca ' s Yer- ma, the tragedy of a child- less woman. Midway through the run, Marsha Harper ' s unfortunate ac- cident gave audiences the unique opportunity of see- ing two very different, yet two very exciting in- terpretations of Yerma. Carol Thomas replaced Miss Harper in the last three performances. Sandra West, Barbara McMillian, and Paula Stahls share the latest gos- sip. Young Maria, played by Jeannie Ma-rlin Smith, is blessed with chil- dren and a happy home. George, Dave Kingsley, and Betty, Jeannie Marlin Smith, have a mo- ment to themselves. BEHIND THE YELLOW DOOR Davey, John Goodwin, tells his mother, Dorothy Bradley, that death should not be ac- cepted so readily. South Africa sent Centenary the engaging Mr. Robert Mohr of Cape Town to direct the American premiere of Behind the Yelloiu Door, a South African play by Flora Stohr. The New Year ' s Coon Festival pro- vided the background for gay parties as well as the tragic death of the younger Daniels daughter. Mr. Robert Mohr instructs the three ladies of the Daniels family. Members welcomed rushees into their lodge and gave them some idea of what the coming year held in store for the Alpha Xi ' s. There would be open houses, suppers, the faculty Brownie Party; Hootenanny, a Harvest Moon Hayride, the Christmas parties, the Playboy contest, the Rose For- mal, and Spring Sing. Once a week, the Alpha Xi ' s entertained under-privileged children at the Salvation Army and held special parties at Christmas and Easter for the children. Alpha Xi ' s were members of honorary scholastic and professional fraternities. They were on the Dean ' s List, in S. L. T. A., in the Story Book League, and in Kappa Pi. They were active in various campus activities such as Choir, religious organizations, Biology Club, Cencoe, Student Senate, band, Freshman Follies, Jongleurs, AWS, and WRA. They were also represented on the Mardi Gras Court. Connie Grambling plays for the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. The Alpha Xi ' s roared back into the twenties for rush this year. In December the Zetas gave a fun-filled all-campus dance, the Mistletoe Mash. The elegant spring formal honoring the new initiates was the climax of the year ' s activities. Two personal-service projects of the Zetas were: assisting a United Fund Day care center and adopting and supporting an Austrian orphan girl. Alpha Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order completed a most successful rush at Centenary. At the November party Miss Bitsy Walton was named KA Rosebud of the pledge class. The Order ended its social year with Old South, which in- cluded the secession from the Union, lawn party, and ball. Probably the campaign success of the year was won by the KA ' s during class officer elections. The KA cannon not only shattered windows and crashed the front door of James Dorm, it also set the housemother, Mrs. Caldwell, on fire. Representing the Kappa Alpha ' s on campus are as follows: Who ' s Who, Mai Morgan; Cheerleaders, Mike Little and John Salisbury; Conglomerate staff, Pitts Launey; Student Senate President, Mai Morgan; Circle K, Tom Colquitt, Mai Morgan; Mike Little was chosen for the Washington Semester program; the Student Senate Committees included Reed Yates and Mike Walsh; Alpha Epsilon Delta, Mai Morgan; Pi Kappa Delta, Mai Morgan, Mike Little; and ODK, Mai Morgan. FRESE KI The Kappa Sigma Fraternity began its year by pledging fifty-two boys. After the flurry of the parties at the beginning of school, the chapter settled down to the more serious aspects of campus life. Kappa Sigma captured many elections for campus offices. Serving as Student Senate Treasurer was Popejoy. Sena- tors included Schwendimann, Lawrence, and Williams. Class Presidents were Robinson, Critcher, and Clinton. Selected for Who ' s Who were Kizer, Hruska, Clinton, and Schwendimann. Centenary Gentleman was Rick Hruska. Tapped for ODK were Critcher, Linder, and Schwendimann. Other accomplishments of the Sigs were Hruska, Chief Justice of the Honor Court; other Court Justices were Schwendimann, Clinton and Hooker, alternate. Jimmy Journey served as editor of the Yoncopin. The Sigs were also represented on the Conglomerate staff, in the choir, and in the honorary organizations. Early in the year Kappa Sigma entertained at its annual Pajama Party. At the Christmas party the pledge class an- nounced Miss Kathy Nader as their pledge class sweetheart. Held in the Spring were the theme party and the Black and White Formal with its reception given by the sweetheart. The Sigs completed their most successful rush this Fall. Parties, open houses, serenading the girls ' dorms, and elections helped fill the Tekes ' schedule. The pledges held a barbecue for the actives, and by the end of the first semester both pledges and actives were knee-deep in remodeling the TKE house. As usual, Tekes enthusiastically participating in all intramural sports, but were just as devoted to scholarship, as evidenced by the chapter ' s recently won international award for top scholastic improve- ment on a small campus. In campus elections pledges John Lewis and Bill Ulrich were chosen as freshmen cheerleaders, Dick Grisham was elected junior favorite, and Joe Loupe chosen sophomore class president. Grisham was student senate vice-president and Will Finnin was sophomore senator; many other Tekes held positions on senate committees, such as the Ad Hoc and Forums. Grisham was selected for membership into Who ' s Who and O.D.K. Gaylon Daigle was elected vice-president of Alpha Chi, while Finnin and James Anderson gained membership into Alpha Sigma Pi. Loupe served as secretary-treasurer of the I.F.C., and Anderson represented the council in the senate. Rob Tinsley. James Anderson, and Cary Perks were mem- bers of Circle K. The Conglomerate had Mike Deare on its staff, and Loupe served as its news editor. Although Tekes were and are found in all facets of campus life, the fraternity has never lost sight of its primary goal — that of cultivating and maintaining a true brotherhood based on individual worth and character. This year the team has traveled 10,000 miles to ten states, Canada, and Mexico. During these travels they have conducted twenty-six clinics and exhibitions in addition to competing in twelve meets, both National A.A.U. and Inter-collegiate. This past summer Marianne Woolner won the first gold medal ever won by an American woman gymnast in the Macciabeth Games in Israel. Mary Camille Traweek Marianne Woolner 128 Susan McDonnell, a native of Scarsboro, On- tario, is undoubtedly one of the outstanding mem- bers of Centenary College ' s fine gymnastic team. She has won first places in vaulting, balance beam, uneven bars, and the floor exercise, her specialty. She has been instrumental in defeating gymnastic teams from Ohio State and Kent State. She repre- sented Canada, her homeland, in the North Ameri- can Championships in Montreal, and succeeded in capturing two gold medals, two silver, and one bronze, the most ever won by a Canadian per- former. She placed fourth all around in the National Gymnastic Clinic Championships held in Sarasota, Florida in December. She is a determined per- former and certainly a great asset to Centenary College. No yearbook, representing as it should all the separate moments in the lives of the many people who make a college, can honestly be dedicated to any one person. But one man, Jack Fiser, does deserve our respect and gratitude. As Centenary ' s Director of Public In- formation, Mr. Fiser is the unsung, be- hind-the-scenes man who directs what the college says about itself. He is symbolic, because of his contribution to Centenary ' s efforts to grow, of the new face of the college. He has willingly gone beyond his public relations duties to help with the college ' s development campaign, and has traveled to New York and Chicago to talk to prospective students, and around the state to speak for the college. But it is in another, more personal way that we have grown to think of Mr. Fiser as trusted friend and soft-spoken mentor. He has always been there to offer help and a kind word; but in %pite of his understanding, he has never tried to supervise or censor our work. He has trusted our ability, and our ability has grown thereby. At every opportunity he has spoken in behalf of improved condi- tions for the Conglomerate and Yoncopin staffs. As a knowledgeable professional, Mr. Fiser represents the growing college. As a man, he is due this tribute: he was there when we needed him. I wondered all year what could be said on this page. Without bringing skeletons out of the closet and munching sour grapes, very little can be said I ' m afraid. Anyway, despite what I just said, it ' s been an K year. Problems? Oh yes, we had problems, but the funny thing is they seem so incredibly small now. I like to think they ' re in a dormant state, like an ulcer, only waiting to be irritated by the tensions facing next year ' s editors. It will be sad, really sad, if they have to fight their own inexperience, as well as their staff ' s, and make guesses about an almost non-existent budget. It ' s so simple. A training program for the staff and an accurate bud- get initiated under a student activities fee could solve the most pressing problems. Staff? Yes, bless their hearts, I had a staff. Everyone on pages 48 and 49 not only did their work, but learned how to do it within the short space of a few weeks, some within a matter of hours. Thank you. My special thanks go to four people who made that last deadline possible — Lynn Olson, Karen Fiser, Lester Hammond, and Pat Ewing. After they volunteered for last minute responsibility, their untiring work and most of all their smiles, tied the loose ends of our book together. Then there ' s Doug, Lynda Douglass, what can I say? Without her this book would have been immeasurably less. And Maureen . . . there is no end of things in the heart . . .
