Centenary College of Louisiana Shreveport, Louisiana ' ■i . Dr. Jack Stauffer Wilkes President, Centenary College As the new president of Centenary College, Dr. Jack Stauffer Wilkes has behind him a record of outstanding achievements in the areas of religion, academics, and politics. Before coming to this college Dr. Wilkes was an Oklahoma Methodist min- ister, president of Oklahoma City University, and mayor of Oklahoma City. Born in Honey Grove, Texas, the president graduated from Gurdon High School, Gurdon, Arkansas, received his A.B. from Hendrix College, B.D. degree from Southern Methodist University, and completed graduate work at the University of Denver, Northwestern University, and Union Theological Sem- inary. Dr. Wilkes holds a D.D. from Oklahoma City University and an LL.D from McMurray College. Dr. Jack Wilkes assumed his office at Centenary College on June 1, 1964. Dr. Wilkes ' s talks in chapel are humorous as well as informative. In addition to his duties on the campus, the president is often required to speak before alumni, civic, and student groups. Mrs. Wilkes ■' , Like bright drops of water spilling over the edge of a fountain, cry stalized by the click of a shutter, the memory of everyday events slides from the mind unless caught at the instant of action •V f V . ,; if. , mm. ' ■Mr. ' M ;SMMMM m Fall is filled with many things; among them are rush, departmental field trips, and the election of cheerleaders. Dean Hohmann checks with I FC to see that no punches are pulled during rush week. A few were pulled, as usual, and many more were poured. Good old Everclear. Before departure for Ocean Springs, J. J. Keller and a silly little kid or two discuss events to come. They brought back all manner of strange sea beasts. Cheerleader elections conjure up very little spirit except among fraternities and sororities who sponsor candidates.  ' , w k • 4 Freshman Orientation, a catch-all phrase which covers many messy situations, is climaxed by Kangaroo Court. These two boys are probably too young to shave, but they are old enough to squirt shaving cream. „!, «««  ... A freshman girl gives an icy glance to the photographer. The glance isn ' t all that ' s icy. Judy Pate looks up from the language lab to tell a friend that she has just given away the last available economics test. Sherry Leopard looks over a little light reading in the alcoves of the bookstore. Her expression indicates that she thinks the title of the center book sums up the whole situation. After the traumas of rush, registration, and orientation are over, the crowd thins out and che world is again just for two. Opportunities to vent spleen at beloved faculty members are received with great vigor. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Emerson During Kangaroo Court these freshman girls stand in mud instead of sling it. Such are the penalties for insub- ordinate freshmen who haven ' t yet learned their places in respect to saintly upper- classmen. Frosh player Andy Fullerton inspects the work of his su- periors. At least the big guys didn ' t shave off his eyebrows. Bradley Peters and Ralph Schwegman offer their services in keeping the Gentlets well groomed. The willingness on the victim ' s face is achieved by threats of worse things to come if he doesn ' t co-operate nicely. Dr. Speairs and some biology students check the map for the biology field trip. Everyone looks con- fused about the whole thing Students generally find that teachers are more than willing to discuss grades with them. It doesn ' t seem to help much, though. Having overcome such obstacles as the English proficiency test and the GRE exam, seniors don their robes with much joy . For some, graduation is a welcome relief from the ac- ademic life. 12 For others, graduation was but the first step in the fulfillment of a rewarding life of scholarship and teaching. For some people, the shelter of the gardens isn ' t seclusion enough. Although this picture was made during the Student Senate cam- paign speeches last year (note avid interest on the faces of the listeners), it was the only daytime shot with more than two people in it that we could get. These girls have been cleaning up the gardens on Greek Day and are now looking for tadpoles or lost contact lenses. It ' s been a long day, and the end is definitely in sight. l ■Kgi „ ' ■•• ' Sifc} %--v ' 3-3  SF !? -ro Editorial scruples and sheer cowardice prevent ad- equate captioning of this picture. After all, even the Dean of Women should be allowed to nibble an ear once in a while. IS You pay your money and you get no choice. Chapel on Thursday is a necessary evil of life at Centenary. The occasional good speakers who have some- thing new to say to college students are like a cool breeze in an atmosphere of hot air. mM Chapel speakers always receive the devout attention of a captive audience. The messages often delivered in chapel cause every head to bow - not in prayer but in books. wwzm WH0m m it Actor Basil Rathbone provided one of the better lyceum pro- grams of the year. Second only to chapel in snooze appeal, the lyceum programs could be vastly improved with more entertainment such as this. Another lyceum program which proved very enjoyable featured the talents of Korean pianist Tong II Han. Mr. Rathbone and an irate fan seem to have had a little disagreement. Dr. Vogel appears to have an opinion on the matter, too. 18 A pictoral representation of the year would hardly be com- plete without a tribute to the efforts ofthe controversial Forums Committee. While the Committee did manage to bring a few speakers to the campus, perhaps its greatest contribution was to point out the fact that there are students who want to know the other side. If James Farmer had been fact instead of fiasco, this page could present a more thorough picture of student inquiry and interest. Expounding on the familiar tenets of southern conser- vatism, Senator Ellender attempts to win back straying young liberals. Most kept on straying. Norman Young exhibits a vital interest in the senator ' s message. Dick Grisham, who bore much ofthe brunt of the Com- mittee ' s attempts, chats pleasantly with the guest. Note the constant right-handed gesture of our speaker. Bob Dickerson seems to have extracted some sort of oath from the senator. This should have been taped for posterity, no doubt. No sights, not even reverie or quiet little card games, are sacred to peeping photographers who have been harassed by des- perate yearbook editors. You may notice desperation at work quite often in this book, but don ' t knock it if you ' ve never been caught two days behind deadline without any pictures. 20 At least once a year, it becomes necessary for even the least fastidious to wash sheets and various other articles. Even after two years, the washing machines in Cline look beautifully new and unused. 21 ..,„_. Two studious heads prepare for exams in the library. Where are all the other studious heads at such a crucial time? At the CUB probably, chasing the exam nerves with the fyorld ' s most potent chasers. II In the eternal search for release from academic pressures, the students below indulge in a game of cards. A few of these students indulge in constant release from academic pressures. This usually results in release from school. ■or Y ' ■' - ' . ' ' ' S M V . 5 I S J ' - 1 l} ' ii iltWiii-tr i tiu7TT3im itTtf accomplished PDQ. Even so, almost anything short of an athletic exhibition may be Witnessed ort any given night on the front porch of James Dorm. : . „ ., • ' ;V.i ' - r ;::T -■' : ' - ' : ----.yr :i[ . y The fact that revelry is a good thing is one of the few subjects on which the Tekes, KAs, and Sigs agree. Wonder what unified revelry would be like? A big, big brawl, that ' s what it would be like. With the aid of Kappa Alpha, the editors aim our best wishes at Yoncopin staff members who ignored deadline dates. With steady determination, chemistry student Don Scroggin prepares an experiment. Wonder if anyone has ever analyzed that cloudy stuff in the cafeteria tea? Cheerleader Terri Sommers felt that her natural mouth wasn ' t adequate to convey the message. It probably was. After a hearty meal of red beans and rice, contented students discuss the merits of institutional food. Jimmy Warren is looking at the foreign body he found in his salad. This picture is dedicated to all seniors who have suffered through Great Issues and really read all six hundred pages a week. We hope both of you like it. A hushed whisper 01 snow fell on the campus in February. An icy maverick in Louisiana weather, this day was bordered on either side by days of sunshine and shirt-sleeves. k 2 i FAfliLTY B.C. Of course we have thank-yojus to say to staff members who worked - they were few, and we appreciated their ef-; forts. To staff members who didn ' t manage to get their sections in on time or at all, we won ' t print the things we have in mind to say. This is neither the time nor the place to vent spleen. Much gratitude goes to Mr. Fiser and Mr. Austin, who often had wet shoulders from listening to our troubles. A last rose is tossed to non-staff people who helped so much with the beauty pageant and the book itself. In editing the Yoncopin, a phenomenal panorama of opinion must be pacified, The faculty arid administration must not be insulted, Louisiana Methodism must be pleased, the city of Shreveport must not be incriminated, and the stu-. dents must be satisfied. Our efforts were concentrated on the area of opinion which we felt to be most important, that of the students, with the hope that other opinions weren ' t slighted too severely. So here is the 1965 Yoncopin. We hope you like it - we ' ve loved giving it to you. Suzann Welty ' Jimmy Mounger Index (1) Freshman (2) Sophomore (3); junior (4) Senior (5) Special Adair.
