ON LOOKING BACK On learning that on June. 1, 1964, I would retire as president of Centenary College, a re- tired gentleman, several years my senior, said to me, Keep busy and never look back. I quoted this to another retired friend who re- plied, But sometimes you must look back. The first of these statements undoubtedly is good advice, and the second one a wise observa- tion. It is well enough to keep busy, but some- times one must look back. I feel sure there will be many times In the years ahead that I will look back at Centenary College. I already know what my one greatest regret will be— that administrative work deprived me of closer contact with students. Administra- tive work has not been without its rich rewards and deep satisfactions, but I have never regarded it as anything more than a means to an end—a necessary evil, as it were. One of our greatest teachers at Centenary has said: A teacher ought not to teach history, mathematics, biology, or any other subject. A teacher should teach students. This is the ideal of all great teachers, and one which I believe will continue to guide Centenary ' s faculty in the days ahead. For the days ahead are those on which I hope to look back with the greatest pride.
