Mickle, president of Centenary College, received his B.A. degree at Southern Methodist University. He later took his master ' s degree at Columbia University and received the honorary doctorate of laws degree from Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas. President Mickle ' s greatest contribution to Centenary, its students, and its future is his labor on the building program and endowment fund. When the new School of Music is completed, it will be the thirteenth new building completed during Dr. Mickle ' s leadership. During his nineteen year career as head of Centenary the endowment fund has grown from less than a million dollars to an excess of eight million dollars. In special appreciation of the outstanding work we feel it fitting to dedicate this 1964 YONCOPIN to a man dedicated to the cause of furthering Centenary College. 1964 Christmas Open House Dedication of -Cline Dormitory Dr. Joe J. AAickle assumed the office of President of Centenary College in 1945. In that year he and Mrs. AAickle took residence in the President ' s home across the street from the administration building. In their nineteen years as President and first Lady, Doctor and Mrs. Mickle have been host and hostess for many social occasions honoring faculty, students and guests of the College. Among the several annual events given by them are the Christmas Tea for the faculty and the Open House for Graduating Seniors. Open House at Women Department Club for President and Mrs. Mickle. Fall, 1945 ON LOOKING BACK On learning that on June. 1, 1964, I would retire as president of Centenary College, a re- tired gentleman, several years my senior, said to me, Keep busy and never look back. I quoted this to another retired friend who re- plied, But sometimes you must look back. The first of these statements undoubtedly is good advice, and the second one a wise observa- tion. It is well enough to keep busy, but some- times one must look back. I feel sure there will be many times In the years ahead that I will look back at Centenary College. I already know what my one greatest regret will be— that administrative work deprived me of closer contact with students. Administra- tive work has not been without its rich rewards and deep satisfactions, but I have never regarded it as anything more than a means to an end—a necessary evil, as it were. One of our greatest teachers at Centenary has said: A teacher ought not to teach history, mathematics, biology, or any other subject. A teacher should teach students. This is the ideal of all great teachers, and one which I believe will continue to guide Centenary ' s faculty in the days ahead. For the days ahead are those on which I hope to look back with the greatest pride. I 1=964 . Actually, these boys are fixing lunch. 12 . . . well spent hours of leisure Most everybody likes to help sweep out the amphitheater on brisk Saturday mornings. Playing with one ' s pet is a favorite way to while away those idle hours in the dorm. This isn ' t really leisure, but it adds a little foreign culture to a yearbook badly in need of some type of culture. Grace and form are the earmarks of this year ' s dances. Brotherly love knows no bounds. Sometimes we wish it did. Many of the South ' s finest entertainers are first booked in the Centenary Sub. 13 . . the dedication of new Nameless Dean Hohmann ' s dedication speech. The dedication of the new boys ' dorm was an event which heralded an advance in the living standards of male residents of Centenary College. Initial airiness, flooded showers and lack of towel racks were far overshadowed by all the other advantages of a new home with a built-in fountain. Once the place of illicit birthday parties, the dorm now is the scene of Christmas suite parties (pictures censored), icy splashes in the fountain, and, in time of necessity, the burning of midnight oil over the books. . This view of the courtyard, obviously taken at the instant of the dorm ' s completion, shows the calm before the storm of boys, parents, and sundry officers of the law. 14 . . . guardians of the peace face a crazed mob of uncontrollable students Against a throbbing drunken mob, the valiant men in blue extend the firm but gentle hand of authority and justice. After placing riot dispersal methods a foot or so above student ' s heads, officers attempt to flush out rabble rousers. Here they are pictured not being in the boys ' dorm. Everyone agreed that the evening was a gasser. 15 h B. C. TAYLOR, A.B., B.D., D.D. Vice-President W. C. Each year the Playhouse is the scene of a wide variety of produc- tions, ranging from religious drama to musical comedy. In the department students may follow several courses of study in speech or drama, assured of ample opportuni- ties for practical experience in forensics, interpretation, religious drama, children ' s theatre, and the touring of plays in the Ark-La-Tex. Orlin R. Corey, head of the Department of Speech and Drama, and Irene Corey, costume and set designer, are an internationally acclaimed husband-wife team. The Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans was called by Martin Luther a summary of the whole Christian and evangelical doctrine. The play Romans By St. Paul faithfully follows the New Testament original. Heightened figures, suggesting the glory of God and the wonder of faith, in addition to carillon music composed especially for Romans by Johan Franco, portray the magnificence of early Christian faith. During the year Romans toured to Jackson, Mississippi, Washington, D.C., Louisville and George- town, Kentucky, Nashville, Tennessee, Houston, Tex- as, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. With the completion of the expansive building program, several new structures including the library, James Dorm, the music building, Cline Dorm, and the cafeteria have been built. The co-ordinated landscaping and architecture add much to the beauty of the campus. In the future a much needed fine arts and humanities building is to be constructed to replace Jackson Hall.
