THE 1962 63 PLAYBILL OF THE JONGLEURS Mr. Graber and Mr. and Mrs. Corey talk over costumes and plans for one of their productions. Orlin Corey, head of the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse. Mrs. Corey works on costumes for coming plays. 66 Symbol of The Jongleurs of Centenary is a stock character of the 15th century, Cucurucu. He struts on the cover of the playbill of the Jongleurs. The Jongleurs create delight and entertainment wherever they go. The production of JOB is proof of this statement. Mr. Corey and Miss Ruth Alex- ander take a break from their busy schedule. A major theatrical event of the summer of 1962 in Shreveport was the August premier of the musical, The Peace Gimmick. The book was written by Robert Can- zoneri, and given a musical interpretation by Charles Knox. Featured in the play were college, community, and regional talents. Several members of the Centenary faculty, in addition to the speech and drama instructors, participated in the produc- tion. With a cast larger than that of most plays, The Peace Gimmick afforded many of the citizens of Shreveport an opportunity to participate both on and back stage of a dramatic production. Geographically, the creation of The Peace Gimmick involves several sections of the United States. The original concept of the book came in Kentucky, one song was written between Louisiana and Indiana, most of the other songs were written in Mississippi, the book itself was written in California, and the premier of the play was held in Louisiana. Jonolturs oPCtnunaru CoUEae present Buddy Flowers, a Shreveport businessman, played the role of Richard Cordelon. Nancy Humphrey played a double role, as a waitress, as pictured be- low, and as a lady reporter. A smile and thoughts of a big deal play across the face of bookie Jack Mulkey. SUMMER, 1962 at the MARJORIE LYONS PLAYHOUSE s™ 1 if] Job remains faithful to his God, despite ominous warnings and admoni tions from his friends. Intricately made-up, the players resemble the prismatic characters of a cathedral window. Job and the chorus seek to solve age-old questions: Where is God? What is man? Why must man suffer? . . . the eternal search for meaning in life remains man ' s greatest adventure. This state- ment by Orlin Corey could well be called the theme of his play, The Book of Job. In his search for a justification of the suffering with which God has afflicted him, Job finds a faith which is unshakeable by either physical agony or the desertion of friends. The actors, author, and stage crew of Job left house capacity audi- ences at Marjorie Lyons Playhouse in October for a two and one-half month tour of Eastern colleges and civic centers. Then, after a brief return to Shreveport, the group played, sans newspaper publicity, to audiences in Christ Church, Park Avenue, New York City. This sum- mer the play will return for its fifth consecutive season in the outdoor theater in Pine Mountain State Park, Kentucky. The Jongleurs combined humor and farce with satire and irony in their first attempt at this form of American theatrical art. Included on the playbill with the drama were a soft shoe dance, Parisian can-can dancers, and sing- along music. IP CAT Villain AAunro Murgatroyd, played by Don Farley, attempts to silence Ida Rhinegold, the woman who knows the secrets of his colorful past. Mrs. Asterbilt and her daughter Leonie critically survey their new and humble surroundings. Fleurette, French maid played by Dianna Ammons, shows rustic Mookie Maguggins some of her city ways. Whistles from the audience were combined with the dancers ' squeals as the can-can line performed. 69 THE JONGLEURS OF CENTENARY COLLEGE PRESENT POTPOURRI - 63 - THE VALIANT -  - - ANTHOLOGY- A Change of Pace • THE SPACE BETWEEN _,.«,.
