The distinction is always given to one who, through his commitment to the ideals of the academic community, has proved himself worthy of this honor. In gratitude for his achi evements for the college and with a deep sense of his personal worthiness, we the staff dedicate the 1962 YONCOPIN to Leonard Cooke with pride and affection. R LEONARD COOKE, A.B., M.A., B.D. Vice President III; II:;-: FOREWORD OFFICE OF THE MAYOR SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA Shreveport ' s modern history dates back to 1833, when Captain Henry Miller Shreve first gave his name to our city. Captain Shreve was given the almost impossible task of clearing the 165-mile Great Raft which jammed Red River from one bank to the other. The operation took several years to complete, but almost 1,000 miles of the River were successfully opened to navigation. Captain Shreve reported to Washington: Flourishing cotton plantations are now located along the banks of the Red River. There has also a town sprung up equal in population and surpassing any on Red River in amount of business trans- actions. He was referring, of course, to the city of Shreveport. Thus was Shreveport founded by the Shreve Town Company on a site purchased from Larkin Edwards for $5,000. In 1839 Shreveport was incorporated under a charter granted by the State Legislature. The Federal census in 1850 showed the population to be 1,728 residents of the City of Shreveport. Today, river trade which gave Shreveport its beginning, is no longer a factor in our economy, though just recently the Interstate Commerce Commission gave approval for the operation of barge lines on Red River, and may soon be a factor in our economy . Shreveport is now known as The Pipeline Capital of the World and is increasingly important to the nation ' s natural gas and oil production. One-fifth of the nation ' s resources of petroleum, a greater normal reserve of natural gas than any other comparable area in the world, and a wide diversification of industry are responsible for the increasing population and industrialization of our city. While agriculture, commerce, and industry is all important to the economic growth of any city, this alone is not sufficient. Here in Shreveport our people throughout the years have worked for the educational, cultural and spiritual growth of our community. This is evidenced by our fine school system, headed by Centenary College, by our great and beautiful churches throughout our city, and by the many cultural advantages offered to the people throughout this area. The finest and most often repeated oompliment concerning Shreveport is Shreveport is a good place to live and rear a family. . j)04€s6 DE E . Mr. Corey, a graduate of Baylor, has done advanced study in London and Paris and has been director of plays at Kentucky Mountain Theatre Association. Corey ' s production of the The Book of Job is now a successful New York hit. Two former Centenary students, Bob and Marty Shy are currently in this production. Corey ' s play received ex- cellent reviews. Centenary ' s student dramatic organiza- tion, created in September, I960, draws upon the French and theatrical heritage of Louisiana for its name. Out of the dark ages came what the French called Les Jongleurs — minstrels, poets, ac- tors, entertainers — bringing with them magic, mystery and romance. Harbingers of a renaissance in the theater, the Jong- leurs created delight wherever they ven- tured. Symbol of The Jongleurs of Centenary is a stock character of the 15th century, Cucurucu. He struts on the cover of the playbill of the Jongleurs. He is a familiar sight at the Marjorie Lyons Playhouse. The purpose of this organization is to present dramas of imaginative, artis- tic calibre . . . acquainting the campus and community with their theatrical heritage; to afford opportunity for students to awaken in themselves their own cre- ative sensibilities ... to provide a di- versified dramatic programme. Irene Corey designs both sets and costumes for her hus- band ' s plays. She is a graduate of Baylor, majoring in art and drama. She continued her art studies in Paris under Reynold and Martha Arnold. Her superior talent was especially evident in Reynard the Fox. 68 U clonjuun ct Unttiuwu IJcffe e oMUt NOV. 9-18 MARJORIE LYONS PLAYHOUSE UN 1-7231 The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, is a powerful drama, ac- curately depicting one of the most frightening incidents in American history, the witch trials of Salem, Mass. The Jongleurs ' production sought to create the murky mood of a terrible dream. A living wall of witnesses surrounds the awful action. Authentic American Co- lonial costume of the late seventeenth century is the only touch of visible reality permitted. The rest is turbulence — cries, glimpses of terror, anguished faces, shadow shapes of the victims and accusers, pitiable in perspective. By Orlin Corey Jennie Nutt, Patt Byrd, Louella Bains, Bonnie Henry, Paul- ette James, the girls of Salem whose hysteria launched the witch scare. The moment when Elizabeth Proctor out of love, lied to save her husband, unintentionally sent him to the gallows in the climax of the Salem trials. Randy Tallman, Barry Hope, Jennie Nutt. Jennie is denouncing people she saw with the devil. Mary Lou Russell, Jerry Mitchell, Syl- via Cardwell bound for Gallows Hill and then death. Moment when John Proctor chose between a false statement which would lead to freedom, and his integrity, which led to Gallows Hill half an hour later. Bonnie Henry, Grace Jackson, Joe Graber learn that they are incriminated in the Salem trial. twwcjb 8 . 1 5 cs i Reynard the Fox, Randy Tallman; John Broadus, Wable the Lion; Allen Shaffer, Brun the Bear; Hal Prosky, and Tiecelin the Crow, Ruthanne Cozine. A satire on the humorous activity of the animal characters from classic French fables. The design stems from the director ' s concept that this staged fable is a play about animals, whose counterparts are to be found in the human race. The characters were made to become animals in make-up and costume rather than people. Reynard stands in the vanguard of a noble tradition, older than all civilizations. Born centuries ago in medieval France, he has sur- vived the ravages of time without dimming his keen eye or dulling his shrewd wit. His appearance in the atomic age is a notable boost to optimism. As long as Reynard runs the earth, his white-tipped tail snapping in the wind, ready for any prank regardless of danger, the world is really right-side-up. Vespers in the forest with the Rev. Epinard the porcupine- Bob Harmon. Reynard leads the dogs a merry chase. Ysengrin the Wolf, John Broadus. Lendore the Marmot, Sylvia Cardwell. A story of time, of eternal change, from life to death and new life again, as seen in the life of a jealous king ... a tale of good and bad, that makes and unfolds error. King Leontes of Sicily, whose jealous vision engulfs Queen, children, and court in an inferno of chaos. Time is the storyteller of the Winter ' s Tale who weaves the spell of ephemeral harmony imagined by Shakespeare. The moment of miracle when the wronged Queen, Hermoine, is restored to life in the presence of Perdita and Flarizel. 71 IAk He +vsp«% rs or LeMtefi rV Lo ca:c RISONERS MARJORIE LYONS PLAYHOUSE Through the dreams of four soldiers imprisoned in a wartorn church Mr. Fry explores in modern terms the strength and meaning contained in four great Biblical stories: Cain and Abel, David and Absalom, Abraham and Isaac, and the three in the fiery fur- nace. The skillful mixture of violent action and cre- ative thoughtfulness, Biblical story and modern paradox, and religious truth answering the secular need for understanding makes the drama splendid, magnificent, and alive! by Joe Graber Tension runs high on. four soldiers im- prisoned in a church. Marshall Oglesby in a dramatic soliloquy. 72 THE JONGLEURS OF CENTENARY COLLEGE The Miser, Moliere ' s comic masterpiece of rascality and farce, concluded the first season of The Jongleurs. This production of avarice sought to recreate the spirit of folly and wise laughter residing within the play. Style of playing, design, direction, and decor flow from that quality. For Moliere the act of comedy is to excite laughter which is a prelude to reflection. The play has the range of comic characters that is most no- table: for here are the most memorable of hypocrites, humbugs, quacks, and snobs in all theater literature. Moliere ' s great comic types do not change in the sweep of events. Situations serve only to illuminate their psychology. This is perfectly logical. A reformed and generous Harpagon is unthinkable. Foibles or small vices may yield to the influence of circum- stances. But the great psychological lesions like avarice or hypocrisy, which never heal, are only revealed by action. THE BOOK OF JOB John Broadus and Virginia Bobbitt George Bryan It was with great pleasure and a little pride that the Speech and Drama Department announced the opening of Orlin Corey ' s The Book of Job in New York City. Adapted by Mr. Corey from the King James translation of the Biblical story and designed by Irene Corey, this play has had a long and tempestuous history. Since its premier in Georgetown, Kentucky, four and a half years ago it has increasingly achieved recognition both here and abroad. The play was given a successful European tour which included the Brussels World ' s Fair and has played for three summer seasons at the outdoor theater in Pineville, Kentucky. Many Centenary College students have had roles in the summer company including: Vir- ginia Bobbitt, James Foster, Don Farley, Hal Proske, and George Bryan. ... I ! ? As the last pages go to press and the staff breathes a sigh of relief, the editor pauses to take stock of the work and figure out how it was finished on time. It occurs to us that many peo- ple, on and off campus, have played an important role in the production of the 1962 Yoncopin. Without the staff members who survived the rush for dead- lines, the editor ' s jittery nerves and worried consultations, this book would not be in the reader ' s hands. So thanks, staff — for the many unpaid hours you spent planning pictures and layout, typing and drawing up pages. To those students and faculty members who posed (endlessly it seems) for me, I say thanks. I do appreciate the graceful en- durance of photo sittings, scheduling of group pictures, occa- sional missed appointments, and the retakes necessary in the course of the year. A special thanks is due to the Taylor Publishing Company of Dallas and its representative, Fred Elsing. To George Shorter of Snorter ' s Studio and Ben Kinel of Kind ' s Studio for having pictures when I needed them even though it was at times incon- venient for them. It is the editor ' s hope that these people will be satisfied with the 1962 Yoncopin, because their efforts have made the book INDEX A Adair, Donnie (So) 84, 106, 150 Addison, Barbara (Fr) 160 Aiken, Marty (Fr) 80, 158, 160 Aiken, William (Fr) 84, 111, 119, 159, 160 Akins, Ruth Ann (Jr) 62 Albright, Havard (So) 150 Alford, Janet (Fr) 48, 54, 160, 167 Allen, Linda (Jr) 142 Allen, Nathan (Jr) 107 Allend, Louise (Fr) 160 Ammons, Dianna (So) 54, 78, 150 Anderson, Joel (So) 150 Anderson, Mary (Fr) 49, 151, 160 Andrews, Wilda (So) 150 Anthony, Isaac (So) 150 Armintor, Marie (Sr) 45, 65, 78, 130 Arnold, Robert (Fr) 160 Arnoldi, Thomas (Jr) 50, 54, 55, 150 B Bahn, Mildred (So) 150 Bailey, Cindy (Fr) 54, 61, 160 Bain, Hoyt (Jr) 59, 84, 150 Bains, Louella (Jr) 62, 69, 72 Balliet, Judy (So) 80, 150 Banta, Val Jean (So) 150 Barbee, Barbara (Jr) 38, 40, 41, 60, 61, 63, 119, 142 Barnes, Furman (So) 104, 110, 150 Barnes, Tim (Fr) 49, 160 Barrett, Clyde (Fr) 160 Barrett, Thomas (Sr) 142 Barton, Evelyn (Sr) 130 Bauchman, Richard (Fr) 160 Baughman, Charles (Fr) 160 Beaird, Linda (So) 150 Bearden, Barbara (Sr) 60, 130 Beattie, Donald (So) 150 Beazley, Kathryn (Fr) 80, 160 Beckley, Eleanor (So) 150 Bell, Howard (Fr) 150 Bell, Robert (Jr) 130 Bennett, Clay (Jr) 142 Bennett, Francis (Fr) 160 Berry, Michael (Fr) 160 Bibbins, Lorene (Sr) 130 Biggs, Mouzon, (Sr) 130 Bishoff, Bob (So) 50, 84, 150 Bishop, Eric (Jr) 82, 142 Blackburn, Lloyd (Sr) 130 Blackman, William (Fr) 61, 84, 158, 160 172 Blackmon, Betsy (Jr) 61, 63, 78, 142 Blankenship, Robert (Jr) 56, 63, 64, 86 Blevins, Sharon (So) 54, 150 Bliese, Rhoda (Fr) 51, 160 Bobbitt, Virginia (Sr) 62, 130 Bolster, Jo Ann (Fr) 80, 160 Bone, David (Fr) 160 Bone, Lee (So) 150 Boney, Mary Lynn (Fr) 160 Bonneau, Gail (Fr) 78, 160 Bonner, Lynda (Fr) 160 Bossier, Gary (Fr) 160 Bounds, Harold (Sr) 61, 63 Bowen, Jennifer (So) 150 Bowen, Olivet (So) 150 Bowker, William (Fr) 84 Box, Roger (So) 57, 84, 105, 150 Boyette, Stanley (So) 150 Brandon, Julian (Sr) 130 Brent, John (Fr) 51, 160 Brewer, John (So) 45, 50, 84, 150 Brewerton, Thomas (Jr) 82, 142 Brian, Bonnye (Fr) 51, 160 Brian, Kathleen (So) 150 Briggs, James (So) 150 Briggs, Mary Lou (So) 80, 151 Brister, Edward (Fr) 160 Broadus, John (So) 62 Brown, Marshall (Fr) 82, 160 Brown, Carol (Fr) 76, 160 Brown, Kay (Fr) 76, 151, 160 Bruce.-Merry Ann (Fr) 161 Brunson, Richard (Fr) 82, 161 Brunson, Gene (Jr) 54, 59, 84, 142 Burks, LaVerne (Jr) 45, 46, 41, 49, 76, 119, 142 Burnett, Shirley (Jr) 46, 54, 105, 142 Butcher, Barbara (Fr) 161 Butcher, Jerry (Fr) 101, 102, 161 Butler, Georgia (Fr) 161 Byrd, Ronnie (Fr) 50, 84, 161 Byrd, Pat (So) 57, 61, 62, 69, 78, 151 C Caldwell, Diane (Sr) 40, 41, 47, 59, 80, 119, 129, 130 Calliham, Robert (So) 151 Camerer, Joyce (Jr) 57, 65, 78, 142 Cameron, Peter (Fr) 161 Camp, Diane (Sr) 46, 105, 115, 117, 120, 130 Campisi, Frank (So) 151 Cannon, Lynn (Sr) 46, 131 Cararas, Sandra (Fr) 161 Cardwell, Sylvia (Sr) 62, 69, 142 Carpenter, W.
