Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1961 volume:

• s MARGARET REEVES AND GENE LACAZE, CO-EDITORS, PRESENT THE 19 CENTENARY COLLEGE OF LOUISIANA SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA DEDI ATION - £ j The 1961 Yoncopin Staff is proud to dedicate this year ' s book to a man who has merited the respect, the admiration and the sincere gratitude of the students of Centenary and his college associates — DR. LEROY VOGEL, DEAN OF THE COLLEGE FOREWORD LOOKING BACKWARD — AND FORWARD 1961 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Civil War, or War Between the States, as some seem to prefer to call it. There are two ways in which this gigantic struggle may be viewed from the perspective of 1961. We may simply look backward and take sides, as our fore- fathers took sides, and thus become immersed again in the bitterness and hatred of sectional issues which should divide us no longer. We may make every effort not only to hold open the sores of dead issues but to pour salt in those sores. Unfortunately today there remain a few who wish to do this — a few who would question the political, social, and economic unity of the nation — a few who fail to recognize the fact that this is 1961 rather than 1861 and that the issues which engaged our forefathers in 1861 are no longer the issues of 1961. There are a few who would rattle the bones of this dead past, but there is no meat on the skeleton. On the other hand, we can remember this struggle with thanksgiving that we survived as a united nation. How tragic it would be today if we stood before the dangers of 1961 as two nations instead of one. In this small world of 1961, when any point on our globe can be reached from any other point more quickly than one could cross the State of Louisiana in 1861, we find the major issues of 100 years ago entirely out of place. Jesus once said, ... let the dead bury their own dead. It is not bad advice for us today. We can admire the devotion and courage of our forefathers on both sides of that great conflict of the past century; but this is a new day and new issues face us. Let the sores of the past be buried. CENTENARY COLLEGE CHOIR The 1960-61 Centenary Choir is the product of seventeen years back- ground and tradition. Though the personnel changes rapidly and adjust- ments are many, practices and traditions proving themselves useful have been carried from year to year with continual improvement in mind. In selecting members, Cheesy looks for more than musical talent. Typi- cal students with a wide range of extracurricular activities and a love for singing make the most congenial group, he explains. Traveling has become an important part of the Choir ' s life. A mid- semester tour is scheduled throughout Louisiana every year. In addition to the two-week tour, many single trips are taken during the year, all of which spread Centenary ' s name in this and neighboring states. Na- tionally and internationally the Choir has seen many places including New York, San Francisco, Denver, Atlanta, and the Far East. A graduate of Baylor, he has done advanced study in London and Paris and has been director of plays at Kentucky Mountain Theatre Association. His adaption of the Book of Job was presented at the Brussel ' s World Fair and he toured with it through Europe and Canada. His talented wife, Irene Corey, is also a graduate of Baylor, majoring in art and drama. She continued her art studies in Paris under Reynold and Martha Arnould. Her one-act play The Color Conscious Conscience was listed as one of the 100 best one-act plays by the Saturday Review of Literature. She designs both sets and costumes for her husband ' s plays. Although Murder in the Cathedral is created in the classical tradition of the Greek theatre, it is not strictly speaking a tragedy. Rather is is what may be called a Christian tragedy. That is it por- trays a dramatic paradox — its protagonist, Becket meets death in an apparent defeat, but Becket and Christiandom alike see is his martyr- dom a spiritual fulfillment much more glorious than life through compromise could ever be. As Brooks Atkinson noted a few years ago, this play is ' in broad outline, an imitation of the Passion of Christ ' . An audience finds itself on strange terrain as it watches this play. Eliot, the master of compressed understatement, has chosen to minimize the melodramatic in his play ' s structure. But there are compensations. The melodious lamentations of the chorus, the in- solent intrusion of the tempters in the midst of Becket ' s private de- votions, the moving simplicity of the lovely Christmas sermon, the scathing satire of the knights ' trial before a jury of the audience — these are full measure of reward. Eliot has denied us our traditional theatrical treat of tension and passion, so that he may give us a new, bolder design. — Orlin Corey V Chorus of Women of Canterbury: Ruth Akin, Ruthanne Cozine, Lorine Crenshaw, Jerre Ann Hargis, Jane Hebert, Grace Jackson, Sandy Larsen, Nancy Radzikowski, Dorothy Risinger, Julie Schmidt, Ann Sherman, Beverly Smith, Muriel Vonderhaar. 5 0- . . . intrusion of the tempters in the midst of Becket ' s private devotions. Wilh ' ams with the women ' s chorus. r pir CTHE JONGLEURS OF CENTENARY COLLEGE Merry Wives was staged as a merry, wintry, Elizabethan Our Town, transmuting all Windsor into theater. A flexible setting aids action, suggesting the hearty cheer of that age. Merchants and their wives, wearing the middle class fashions of late Tudor times — young lovers, a lawyer, a visiting mountebank — the town ' s preacher, doctor, teacher, inn-keeper, servants — all live lusty, English-holiday lives, separate yet related, creating the corporate personality of Windsor. This realistic comedy is unique, Shakespeare ' s one drama about his middle class contemporaries. As for Falstaff, few will complain that he is not the man they ex- pected. This jolly fraud is, as always, subversive of morality, though the laugh now goes against him. If he does not triumph in rascality, as before it is solely because Windsor is too shrewd for him. These madcap Windsor wives are unconquerable in their chastity and their cleverness. Plainly, wit is made a fool when ill-employed in Windsor-town, and wives are merry, yet honest, too. W. Turner ' s play Cry Dawn in Dark Babylon was the Jongleurs ' second production of the 1960- 1961 season. It also launched a new service to the Ark-La-Tex in that it toured various towns within a two hundred mile radius of Shreveport playing in churches. This production was Southwest premiere of the play which is about the search for faith of a couple whose only child died. It is also a contemporary dra- matic statement of the Christian faith. The presentation of the play marked its premiere in Southern Colleges and universities. I ' The beautiful plates of Adele Douglas presented on this page, as well as the plates on the previous one, are the work of Inene Corey, designer both of sets and costumes for the Rivalry. She has sought to authenticate the designs through the use of formal photographs of Lincoln and Douglas belonging to the collection of Frederick Hill Museum and the Library of Congress. Mrs. Douglas is seen on this page in a six-step-progression of light to dark colors. Her costumes are historically based upon the costume plates of the period, and also on the fact that she was a very striking person, whose presence at the Debates is believed to have had a positive effect upon her husband ' s election and victory over Lincoln. It was, however, the last meeting for several years; and the following paragraph from the minutes will indicate the reason: The Faculty met on this morning, there being no college students and few preparatory students, it was resolved on motion that the President call the executive committee as soon as it is convenient. On the large page opposite the minutes of this meeting, the secretary wrote these words diagonally across the sheet which is clean save for four brief dramatic lines, Students have all gone to war. College suspended, and God help the right! Of all circumstances connected with the colorful history of Centenary, there is none, of which its friends are so proud as of this expression of a Christian gentleman in those embittered years. ♦Taken from CENTENARY COLLEGE GOES TO WAR IN 1861 by Arthur M. Shaw. Jr., pages 6 and 7. 173 A HUNDRED YEARS OF CENTENARY r A hundred fateful years have passed, And with them passed a thousand things That men had dreamed would live and last, Yet fled away on hurrying wings. Eve seen the Red Man pass away, And where his wigwam lately stood The white man ' s temple stands to-day, A city for the silent wood. II And in that change Eve borne a part; How nobly, let the records tell. My creed was written in the heart Of those who bravely fought and fell. My loyal sons have borne my name On fields of conflict far and near; I make no other bid for fame Than this: they always held me dear. Ill My strength has been in the hearts of men, Men who have walked in the ways of the great; Wielders were they of sword and pen, Builders were they of church and state. A hundred fateful years have passed, And yet, in truth, I am not old; Another hundred like the last Will leave my story half untold. IV I stand for God, for life, and truth, I face the daybreak, not the dark; Beneath my banners dauntless youth Still marches forward toward the mark. A hundred years stretch out before — Years full of deeds for those who dare. I stand beside the open door And lift my banner in the air. Fall in ! The triumphs of the past Are naught beside the ones to be; I ' ve nailed the pennon to the mast, I know no fate but victory. By God ' s own grace I ' ve led the field On many a glorious day; Youth cannot fail, youth will not yield, While Centenary leads the way.
