CHARLES YARBROUGH 70 c o M M A N D E R S P O N S O R The purpose of The National Society of Pershing Rifles is to foster a spirit of friendship and cooperation among men in the Military Department and to maintain a highly efficient drill company. Wishing to increase the morale of the ROTC unit at the University of Nebraska in 1891, Lieutenant John J. Pershing formed a picked company of men known as Company A. After winning the maiden drill competition at Omaha in 1892. Company A in 1893 became a fraternal organiza- tion and changed its name to PERSHING RIFLES. From 1900-1911, Pershing Rifles reached the height of its existence prior to World War I and membership was a great military honor. Until 1911 its influence in the Military Department continued, but after that date the organization suddenly lost prestige and declined deplorably. In 1917 conditions became so bad that the organiza- tion was disbanded and its records burned. In 1920 the Pershing Rifles was again formed. But out of the ashes of organization which had died of its own weight in 1917, there sprang a corps with new life and activity. In fact, its growth in honor and prestige was so remarkable that special drill companies all over the country began to seek admittance into the Society. The present National Honorary Society of Pershing Rifles owes its existance to Ohio State University. In the spring of 1924, The President ' s Guard applied for affiliation with the Pershing Rifles but the Nebraska organization refused. Then the Ohio State group, seeing the need for a national organization for basic men, threatened to nationalize The President ' s Guard and leave Nebraska out if the two organizations could not work together. Finally, Nebraska approved the formal application of Ohio State on 13 May, 1925. Thus was inaugurated a new policy in the Pershing Rifles which now includes the National Headquarters at tl University of Nebraska, 12 Regiments, 152 Companies, and over 8,000 members all over the United States and Puerto Rica. 71 MILITARY ■|Kjl % EsJH t ' j P fe, % L ,• Ea ' A « .1 1 i i ■72 1 k tU: ' ■■j. 4 i m BALL 73 RIFLE TEAM STANDING, from left to right: Harold Bounds, Ray Squyres, Ezmond Fatter, Dennis Grigassy, Thomas Harwell, and Wayne Goodnight. Since its opening night in 1957. the nationally famous Marjorie Lyons Playhouse has become a mecca of cultural activity for the entire Ark-La-Tex area, not only in the field of theatre, but also opera, ballet, art and concerts. Thanks to Director Joe Gifford it has successfully combined the talents of Centenary students with that of people from Houston to New York City, and has proved not only a good advertisement for the college but the City of Shreveport as well. In keeping with the tradition of production of outstanding musical comedy, the Playhouse opened its 1959-60 season with the lilting rhythms and lyrics of Cole Porter ' s Kiss Me Kate. This delightful version of Shake- speare ' s Taming of the Shrew, which in reality becomes a show within a show featured Roger Johns and Helene Arthur Burgess in the leads. Stand- outs in the cast were John 0. Williams and Al Pagnato as the gangsters. Choreography was by Larry Stevens of New York. Other Centenary students featured in the cast were: Jack Mulkey. Jim Daigle. Sammy Kilman. Bob Murray, Ray Chabeau. Barry Hope. Tommy Hickcox, Virginia Bobbitt, Ruth Velotta. Ginger Darnell and Bobette Oken. Scenic design was by Keith Simmons. Complete with towered mosques, whirling dervishes, lavish scenery and costumes, beautiful slave girls and a magical score borrowed from Alexander Borodin, Kismet contained all the elements needed to become one of the all-time hits in Playhouse history. Featuring Houston ' s Paul Cambeilh, as the post Hajj, Helene Burgess as Lalume, Linda Fields as Marsinah and Haigler Henry as the wicked Wazir, fame of the show soon spread. Under the skillful direction of world-famous expert on oriental dance, Mara, the show-stopping, high-leaping Ababu troup of Mary Shepherd, Melanie McCain, and Staf- ford Lyons. Jack Mulkey and Ray Chabeau recreated their role in Palm Beach, Florida and will probably appear in the Fort Worth production. Other Centenary students appearing were: Robert Sorensen, David James, John 0. Williams, Ginger Darnell, Jack Baker. Jerrv Mitchell and Keith Simmons. Orchestra was under the direction of Eddy Kozak. 38 Hajj pleads for mercy from Allah . . . and the notorious thief, Jawan (John 0. Williams). (Right) The show-stopping Ababus . . . FRESHMAN FOLLIES March 11 and 12, the Playhouse stage resounded with the music and dancing of Annie Get Your Gun and Oklahoma, as the Freshman Class presented the Freshman Follies of 1960. Proving that all the talent of Centenary is not limited to the drama department, the Follies were a big success. The leads in Annie were: Ez Fatter as Frank Butler. Al Pius as Sittin ' Bull, Bobby Ross as Wilson and Jerry La Bruey as Charlie Davenport. The leads for Okla- homa were: Betsy Gould as Laurey, Barry Hope as Curley, Jackie Rosett as Aunt Ella, Ryan Horton as Will Parker, Nancy Evans as Ado Annie and Rick Biggs as Jud. THE GIRLS IN 509 When the Republican party lost the election in 1932, Aunt Hettie as its cam- paign manager took her young niece Mimsy and sought the seclusion of a lower East Side apartment, where they completely shut themselves off from the outside world. It was obvious to them that with the Other Party in office the United States was absolutely finished. What happens when the girls find out that a Republican is back in office makes one of the funniest, if not one of the most unusual comedies to be seen on any stage in recent years. The Play- house was fortunate to have the talents of two of Shreveport ' s finest actresses Lalia Hurst White and Jeni Lou Ince, as well as the original Broadway set which featured a highly unusual Zebra trap de- signed to snare unwanted visitors and hoist them up to the chandelier. Centenary students in this highly successful play were: Tommy Hickcox, Jerry Fanelli, James Daigle and Bob Murray. Stage managers were Jim Daigle and Sammy Kilman. Hettie and Mimsy listen warily as politicians, welfare workers and reporters try to get into their apartment which is wall-papered with General Motor Stocks. 142 FRATERNITY RUSH Is this what the Sigs Call RUSH??? The color blue symbolizes the blue skies and horizons that lie before us in this new decade. The design featured throughout the book was chosen to sym- bolize the freshness, the freedom, and the challenge for perfection of the ' 60s. May our lives become a Rhapsody in Blue dedicated to the ideals expressed in this writing: Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free ; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the death of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms toward perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever widening thought and action — Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
