the history . . A shaded, flower-strewn, forty acre tract of land devoted to the enlightenment of man is Centenary College. It has, since its be- ginning, achieved a long and worthy history of service to education. The College of Louisiana, Centenary ' s first component and the oldest college in Louisiana, was founded by the state in 1825 at Jackson. This school existed until 1845. In 1839, the Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Church founded a college called Cen- tenary in commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of Meth- odism. The site of Centenary was Clinton, Mississippi. Its trustees, seeking a better location, soon purchased the College of Louisiana and the two were merged at Jackson in 1845. Although a cultural center for nearly a century, Jackson was still a village, in 1900, by-passed by railroads and lacking other ad- vantages which changing conditions demanded in a college site. Early in the new century, Centenary was invited to move to Shreve- port. J. B. Atkins and associates offered forty acres for the campus and the citizens of Shreveport gave a substantial sum for buildings and equipment. In 1908, fifty years ago this year, Centenary College of Louisiana opened its first session in its new location. Since that time it has grown in endowment, facilities and enrollment. Today it stands as a symbol of the struggles which men will undergo for the enlightenment of mankind. On this, its fiftieth anniversary, Centenary College might best be described by the following words written by a Centenary graduate of 1951, Paris Leary: School of arts and school of science, School of God the living Truth; Home of learning, place of trial, We who honor you in youth Shall in age the more revere you For the vision here displayed, Alma Mater, Centenary. The vision shall not fade! For the joys and for the laughter, And for every challenge dared; For the tears and disappointments, And for greater victories shared; For the life we have together, For the best of old and new, Alma Mater, Centenary, We give our thanks to you.
