the president . . . Someone has said, It is perspective that determines judgement, and so it is. Historical perspective is the hallmark of the educated mind. Only the educated mind is able to detect and evaluate the tremendous changes through which we are now passing. These changes are more than mere ripples on the surface of history. Carlton Coon in The Story of Man says, Human history falls nat- urally into four phases. We now stand on the threshold of phase four. We, in 1959, are privileged to witness and participate in the birth of a new age. The greatest danger facing us in this fourth phase of m human history is what Dr. Coon calls neolithic men- tality. It is the mentality which stubbornly refuses to adjust to the greatest transition in the past 6000 years of human history, which seeks to perpetuate ideas and institutions no longer adequate in this larger world in which destiny has placed us. It is to the educated mind that we must turn— the mind which de- tects, evaluates, and makes constructive adjustments to the realities of this new age. It is my hope that, ' % along with your diplo- ma, you will carry from Centenary an in- tellectual awareness of the nature of this larg- er age into which we have now emerged, and a realization that the neolithic mentality of yesterday will not suffice to meet our problems.
