pp years in shreveport i 3 Co-Editor ... .... MARGIE DUKES Co-Editor BOBBY HOLTZCLAW Sponsor MARGARET McDONALD the yoncopin of 1959 gives you • • • the history . . A shaded, flower-strewn, forty acre tract of land devoted to the enlightenment of man is Centenary College. It has, since its be- ginning, achieved a long and worthy history of service to education. The College of Louisiana, Centenary ' s first component and the oldest college in Louisiana, was founded by the state in 1825 at Jackson. This school existed until 1845. In 1839, the Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Church founded a college called Cen- tenary in commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of Meth- odism. The site of Centenary was Clinton, Mississippi. Its trustees, seeking a better location, soon purchased the College of Louisiana and the two were merged at Jackson in 1845. Although a cultural center for nearly a century, Jackson was still a village, in 1900, by-passed by railroads and lacking other ad- vantages which changing conditions demanded in a college site. Early in the new century, Centenary was invited to move to Shreve- port. J. B. Atkins and associates offered forty acres for the campus and the citizens of Shreveport gave a substantial sum for buildings and equipment. In 1908, fifty years ago this year, Centenary College of Louisiana opened its first session in its new location. Since that time it has grown in endowment, facilities and enrollment. Today it stands as a symbol of the struggles which men will undergo for the enlightenment of mankind. On this, its fiftieth anniversary, Centenary College might best be described by the following words written by a Centenary graduate of 1951, Paris Leary: School of arts and school of science, School of God the living Truth; Home of learning, place of trial, We who honor you in youth Shall in age the more revere you For the vision here displayed, Alma Mater, Centenary. The vision shall not fade! For the joys and for the laughter, And for every challenge dared; For the tears and disappointments, And for greater victories shared; For the life we have together, For the best of old and new, Alma Mater, Centenary, We give our thanks to you. Someone has said, It is perspective that determines judgement, and so it is. Historical perspective is the hallmark of the educated mind. Only the educated mind is able to detect and evaluate the tremendous changes through which we are now passing. These changes are more than mere ripples on the surface of history. Carlton Coon in The Story of Man says, Human history falls nat- urally into four phases. We now stand on the threshold of phase four. We, in 1959, are privileged to witness and participate in the birth of a new age. The greatest danger facing us in this fourth phase of m human history is what Dr. Coon calls neolithic men- tality. It is the mentality which stubbornly refuses to adjust to the greatest transition in the past 6000 years of human history, which seeks to perpetuate ideas and institutions no longer adequate in this larger world in which destiny has placed us. It is to the educated mind that we must turn— the mind which de- tects, evaluates, and makes constructive adjustments to the realities of this new age. It is my hope that, ' % along with your diplo- ma, you will carry from Centenary an in- tellectual awareness of the nature of this larg- er age into which we have now emerged, and a realization that the neolithic mentality of yesterday will not suffice to meet our problems. Tom 30 shreveport celebration To celebrate the accomplishments of the past 50 years, Centenary and the City of Shreve- port co-operated in preparing a full week of activities. Throughout the seven days, students and visitors viewed the combined Armed Forces Space-Age Exhibit in the Hanyes Memo- rial Gymnasium, and such highlights as the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce presenta- tion of a sundial containing a time capsule which is to be opened in 2008 A.D. Freshman Day was held during this week and all Freshmen co-operated by wearing costumes which they thought would be worn by the well-dressed college student of 2008. The week ' s activities were culminated by a dance held in the Moore Memorial Student Center at which time Miss Mary Tom Wilkinson was crowned as Queen of the 50 Years in Shreve- port Celebration. 31 32 — .- - -t.- .. , « IBM MISS CECILE PLUMMER and MR. They have been very active this year, having attended all the home games in a body and two of the out-of-town games, Louisiana Tech and Northwestern. The Organization has membership limited to Freshman girls this year, but will increase its ranks to include upperclassmen as it grows older. Mrs. Nichols, Student Activities Counselor, has been very active in promoting this fine organization in every way possible to make it into something Centenary and the Centenary Gents can be proud of for years to come.
