THE PRESIDENT I have heard it said that college executives often confuse the democratic process with that of creative thinking. If this is true, it simply proves that college executives have not escaped a confusion that be- sets American life in general, and perhaps student life in particular. The democratic process is no guarantee of crea- tiveness. In fact it is often used to escape the responsibility that ought to fall upon each of us to do some creative thinking on our own. President A. Whitney Griswold of Yale Univer- sity in an address to the senior class said, Creative ideas do not spring from groups. They spring from individuals. Could Hamlet have been writ- ten by a committee or the Mona Lisa painted by a club? Could the New Testament have been com- posed by a conference report? Somewhere along the road in your education there should have come an urge to think things out for yourself, to break away from collective con- clusions. At some time you should have discovered that the forward progress of the human race has not come from the unanimity of the committee or a majority vote on election day; rather from the creative minds of individuals who have maintained their intellectual independence from the crowd. If in some small measure your education has freed you from the crowd and has set your feet on the road to independent thinking, it has become your pearl of great price from which you will not want to part. -o-YO
