CENTENARY COLLEGE SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA §§§ § DR. JOHN A. HARDIN formerly dean of the college for twenty-four years., we dedicate this issue of the Yoncopin as a small expression of our esteem for him as an educator and our love for him as an understanding friend. His great spirit has guided Centenary College to its present high scholastic standards and has helped thousands of individuals to find useful places in society. Through his magnificent personality, our kindly Dean has won many life-long friends. Our sorrow at losing him as dean is tempered only by our memories of the many years of faithful service he has given us. Bishop Paul E. (centenary ( oliecje of L t Skreveport ouisiana OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT TO THE STUDENTS OF 1947-1948 You who have attended Centenary College this school year, have been members of the largest stu- dent body in the school ' s history. It is my hope that this student body will prove to be great not only in numbers but also in the quality of citizenship it brings to its home communities. It has been the aim of the faculty to give you an aducation that is truly liberal, one that will help liberate your minds from any trace of prejudice and bigotry, and one which will instill into your hearts firm determination to continue your search for truth and justice in the world about you. If you have achieved that freedom of thought and that conviction of soul, you will surely contribute greatness to the economic, social and religious life of your home communities. A loe J. Mickle, President Ernest H. Cherrington, Jr., was appointed Dean of the College upon the retirement of Dean John A. Hardin in May of 1947. Dean Cherrington came to Centenary College on May 29, 1946, after his release from the Army Air Forces, where he held the rank of major. He holds the A.B. degree, magna cum laude and the M.S. degree from Ohio Wesleyan. His Ph.D. degree in astronomy is from the University of California. Mrs. A. R. Campbell, Dean of Women, has served, in this capacity for twenty-three years. Dean Campbell received her A.B. and A.M. in English from Wellesley Col- lege. She is also Associate Professor of English. ■ -:.: :■:■ . S. D. Morehead, A.B., A.M., Ph.D. Business Manager of the College, and Head of the Commerce and Economics Department. Goodloe R. The calm, unhur nJh .-;■ ' cv fit . . 4j tJ One of the most important days in the history of Centenary College was that of Tuesday, February 17, 1948. On that day President Joe J. Mickle operated the bulldozer which moved the first earth preparatory to construc- tion of the new $756,000 Science Hall. It is the present plan that the building be com- pleted in time for the opening of school in the fall of 1949. Mr. Paul M. Brown, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, was master of ceremonies for the ground breaking. Bishop Paul E. Martin, who is pictured with President Mickle to the right, was principal speaker for the event. He spoke on the close relationship between science and religion as symbolized by the church-related college. Other prominent guests on the program in- cluded George D. Wray, chairman of the Science Hall committee; J. K. Cannon, com- manding general of the air training com- mand; Dean Robert P. McCutchen of the graduate school of Tulane University; Robert M. Lester, of the Carnegie Foundation; W. Scott Wilkinson, president of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce; John McW. Ford, Commissioner of Finance of the city of Shreveport, and Col. A. C. Strickland, Com- manding Officer of Barksdale Field. 7 1 Hi m ■■ ■ : i B V BfJ htI F l; - M r A Mm H Giving the year its social impetus are the rush parties held by the fraternal organizations in September. This mad whirl of fun leaves the freshmen in a spin, and the upper-classmen with circles. The final day of sign- ing bids and pledging is one of joy and relief. Thus ends the endurance contest by which neophytes be- come Greeks. W Oft, 10 J From registration to final cramming for examina- tions, every day is full, whether it be spent in studying, attending class- es, or relaxing in the S.U.B. ouJv Jotov ' = jL f The largest graduating class in the history of the college received their degrees at com- mencement exercises in June 1947. Included in the 132 seniors receiving their bachelor de- grees was Mrs. Carrie Schwing Tomb, who finished at the head of her class in 1900. The fact that women students were not given de- grees in those days caused the award to be delayed until forty-seven years later. The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred upon Dean John A. Hardin, who retired from his post as dean after 24 years. The honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon the Reverend Mr. J. Henry Bowdon, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Lake Charles and a member of the board of trustees. The Baccalaureate Sermon was preached at the First Methodist Church in Shreveport, by the Reverend Mr. Robert Goodrich, a former student of Centenary College. The Commencement Address was delivered by Dr. Amos Thorn- berg. Others on the program were Dr. James M. Owens and Dr. R. B. Paine, of the graduating class of 1882, who is the oldest living graduate of Centenary College. 6 rcofoadz uetcoMC v ■HEE ..• . V TT ■£■ The grid sport was resumed at Centenary in the fall of 1947 after a war-time recess. The return of pep rallies, parades, and a homecoming game brought new enthusiasm to the campus. At the end of the season, however, the college announced that lack of financial support for subsidized football made it necessary to discontinue the sport on that basis. The Maroon and White Gentlemen were humbled in their 1947 debut by a hard-blocking, hard-driving University of Houston eleven with a score of 19-7. The Gents ' score was made on an 85-yard sprint by James Francis, 145-pound freshman, who took a Houston punt late in the second quarter and raced from his 15 to the goal. Bob Barlow ' s conversion gave the Gents their seventh point. Francis and Humphries stood out offensively for the Gents, with J. B. Sclifo and Barlow doing their share of the tackling. Although the Gents played their hardest to win this initial contest, the Houston Cougars proved too much for them. The fine blocking and running of the Cougars marked them as a team to watch in years to come. fc GuJi AND HIS STAFF Head Football Coach Jess Thompson was introduced to the student body on January 12, 1947. Coach Thompson introduced Paul Cochran, his assistant for the coming year. Both coaches are from Cameron State Junior College of Lawton, Oklahoma. Coach Thompson was a football star in college and also played professional ball with the Green Bay Packers. He holds an M.A. in physical education from Oklahoma A. M. In 1934 he went to Cameron as assistant coach and became athletic director in 1939. During the war he served in the Navy, spend- ing seventeen months in the Pacific. In his initial talk to the student body, Coach Thomp- son said that although the team might not win all of its games the first year, it would display plenty of fight and spirit. This predicition held true, and the students of Centenary were proud of the sportsman- ship and great effort on the part of the coaches and team. Mrs. W. K. Megarity Secretary Athletic Department B. Late in the second quarter the Gents took the ball on a kick-off and retained pos- session of it until a deadlock in the contest. Then, starting on their own 35 yard line, the Gents made a series of passes, the top play being a beau- tifully executed screen pass from Carl Brewington to Jerry Potter. Pot- ter carried the ball to the Broncs ' one- foot line tor a 26-yard gain. After Brewington crashed over the goal line, Jewel Humphries converted. GENTS BOW TO CENTRAL STATE Charlie Rhea Burl Bartlett Bob Barlow ' ■ v.. fm • L The Gents thought they had the upper hand in this game, but were disillusioned as the McMurray Indians of Abilene, Texas, stormed back to overtake them. After receiving the second-half kick-off, Jerry Potter ' s punt gave the Gentlemen their first score. This was set up by a series of passes and wide end runs. The second touch- down came early in the fourth quarter when Eck Hunter faded back to his own 40-yard line and tossed a beautiful aerial. Jess Walton took, it on the one-yard line. But when the final gun sounded, the Indians were out in front 20-12. The Moccasins sent the Centenary Gents reel- ing with a lightning thrust early in the contest and the Gents were never able to recover from it. This 20-0 defeat was a bitter one for the Centenary team as it marked the first time they had failed to score since their return to football. Paul Green Camile Spatap.o Tigers Trample Gents The fourth contest for the Centenary eleven proved to be dis- astrous, as the Memphis State Tigers acquired their second win of the season against our team. It was a game where everything seemed to be right for the opposition and wrong for us. The Tigers used 31 players, but turned out a good performance with few mistakes. The Gents fell victim to frequent bad breaks. Their sole score was made midway of the fourth period when Hunter dashed around the left end of the five-yard line to make the final score: Memphis State, 26; Centenary, 7. They are elected once a year in a general election held every spring. This past year the Student Body officers journeyed to Baton Rouge for a conference on student government. This conference was designed for student officers in the Southern and Southwestern Association of Student Government to get together and discuss mutual problems and compare the specific problems on each campus with those on others. Charles J. Stamper President Coleman Brown Gaius Hardaway Betty Downs William Huckabay Sybil Durbin Charles E. Laing Glen F. Graves J. D. Theus STUDENT SENATE The Senate is composed of five student body officers, the presidents of the four classes, a representative from the non-fraternity students, a representative from the non-sorority students, a representative from the interfraternity council, and one from the Pan-Hellenic Council. These students comprise the student governing group en the campus. It is their purpose to legislate certain measures which will be of interest to the students, represent the student body to the faculty and school authorities, and in general to make conditions more pleasant for the students. The Senate is not an all powerful organization and has definite limitations in its authority, but the influence of the Senate is often more im- portant than the actual power to create or de- stroy. With student funds the Senate has pro- vided two dances for the student body, one celebrating Homecoming, and the other for the Founder ' s Day picnic and holiday. The World Student Service Fund was sponsored by the Senate in connection with other campus or- ganizations. Under the leader- ship of Drum Major Bill MacDaniels and Twirler Herbert Diebner, the band spirit zoomed to an all-time high as they put on an impromptu show in the rain and mud at the Central State game. The enthusiasm exhibited by the band members at football and basketball games and on parades was only a reflec- tion of that shown by the band sweetheart, Miss Beverly Stovall and the band mascot, Billy Causey, son of the director. Other band activities during the year included a long-to-be-remembered trip to Houston, two short trips to Natchi- toches and Ruston, chapel programs and concerts. The Maroon Jacket Drum Corps was also an outstanding addition to the band on the football field and at parades. Herbert Diebner With a trip to San Francisco as a start- ing point, the Centenary College Choir has made this year the greatest in its history. After singing for the Lions ' In- ternational Convention and giving its first network broadcast in Frisco, the Choir broadcast again from Los An- geles and gave concerts in three cities on the trip back to Shreveport. During the school year the Choir has appeared over 36 times in the Ark-La- Tex area. This year also marked its second season in a weekly, sponsored radio program. Representing Centenary and Shreveport, the group sang on a nation wide broadcast originating in Shreveport in January. They sang from the Choir Shack on the college campus — an old building remodelled by the Choir members for a rehearsal studio. Necrology Ceremony at the International Convention ot the Lions Clubs Typical of the Choir ' s affection for Director A. C. Voran is the fact that he is never known as Mister Voran. Upholding the high ideals set for them by their sponsor, Dean Mabel Campbell, the members are outstanding in leadership, character and scholarship. Services performed by the members for the college and for individual students inctude acting as guides on registration days; collecting attendance cards at chapel assemblies; and welcoming visitors to the college at all athletic or social functions. Pi Mu Sigma, the pre-medical fra- ternity, is cne of the oldest organi- zations on the campus. It was founded in 1925 under the spon- sorship of Dr. I. Mdizlish. This club is now under the sponsorship of Dr. Mary Warters. In order that a student be received as a member he or she must have first a sincere desire to enter the field of medicine. This must be suppiemented by a B average in science and an over all C average in all other courses. Also the mem- ber must be submitted to an in- itiation ritual and must prepare a fifteen hundred word theme on any subject concerning medicine or disease. During the year Pi Mu Sigma con- tributes annually one or more books on some medical subject to the library. For programs the members of Pi Mu Sigma are privileged to hear interesting and informative discus- sions by physicians selected from those practizing in Shreveport. Programs of this type have done much to stimulate and inspire pre- medical students in their present studies and in their work to come. Members: P. F. Apgar, O. J. Bar- nette, Richaid J. Parliamentarian and Sergeant-at-Arms We the students of the art depart- ment of Centenary College, in or- der to promote greater interest and broader experiences in the field of art, wish to declare our- selves an organization, feeling that in doing so we will realize a high- er realm of the aesthetic and the cultural. It is therefore our most earnest de- sire to have a great wealth of knowledge, understanding and ex- periences in this field to better understand the cultural heritage of our race, to recognize and ap- preciate all kinds of art and its creators. For aid in the pursuance of these aims, we do now establish the following constitution. The preceding paragraph contains the preamble to the constitution of the Art Students ' League. Last fall they went down Red River in Mr. Brown ' s river boat sketching typical Louisiana scenery. Excursions were also made to Cross Lake and Caddo Lake. In February Dr. John Scales, Jr., showed the students his techni- color film on Louisiana which showed them how many interest- ing and beautiful objets d ' art were in our own state. In the Spring the League will spon- sor art exhibits at the Louisiana State Exhibit Building. The stu- dents ' own work will also be on display in which styles and tech- niques vary from impressionism, naturalism, to cubism, surrealism and non-objective art. These ex- hibits are always open to the stu- dent body as well as members of the League. It is justly proud of the many members who have won fame and acclaim in their sev- eral fields of endeavor both for themselves and for their fraternity. There are few, if any, phases of campus activity in which the K. A. ' s are not serving with distinction. This year the three male student body officers are the corresponding three top fraternity officers, two male cheer-lead- ers were K. A. ' s, four of eight men selected for membership in Who ' s Who Among Students in American Universities and Col- leges are K. A. ' s, the Centenary Gentle- man, Most Versatile Boy, Most Popular Boy, the President of the Freshman Class, and the President and Treasurer of the Senior Class are but a few to mention of the honors and offices held by members of this recognized fraternity. Interfrutemity competition has furnished many- pleasant highlights to the regular social and academic calendar. This year the football championship which was lost for the first time last year was returned to the Boys Across The Street. Kappa Alpha has consistently maintain- ed the highest scholastic average of all fraterni- ties on this campus for many years and this was no exception. It participated in the expansion of the order by conducting the initiation for the new chapter at Louisiana Tech. It is certainly proud to have had the opportunity of assisting in this growth, especially here in North Louisiana where it has been the only chapter for years. This past year has witnessed the formation of the K. A. Mothers Club, that tireless group who have worked hard to provide the house with furnishings and fixtures. Their contribution to the K. A. ' s position on the campus has been immeasurable, and for that we are grateful. Of the initiates at Virginia during the session of 1872-1873, the most important in the later history of the fraternity was Stephen A. Jackson, who embodied in the Kappa Sigma ritual the European tradition, which takes the fraternity back in spirit to the University of Bologna in the year 1400 and the founding there of a society of students for mutual protection against the governor of the city, Balthasar Cassa. The society spread to other European universi- ties, and its traditions descended through many cf the noble families of the continent to make connection with one of the early members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity who was visiting in Eurooe. The charter was surrendered in 1904. So outstanding, however, was this chapter that for 54 years the executive commit- tee of the fraternity refused to grant the name of Epsilon to any other institution with the hope that some day Centenary would reach a point in its expansion that would justify the re-installa- tion of this chapter. This occurred on the an- niversary of its first installation, August 29, 1939, when Sigma Phi fraternity on the campus was granted a charter reviving the Epsilon chapter of Kappa Sigma. Theus Vice-President Harry Jarred Secretary Malcolm Fridge Treasurer The council is composed of three representatives from each of the four fraternities and one faculty advisor. The officers are provided by each fraternity in a four-year rotation system. The primary purpose of the council is to perpetuate the fraternity system at Centenary. The council serves as the governing body for all the fraternities on the campus and is practically sovereign in its legislation due to the broad powers given it by the school authori- ties. The establishment of rules, hearing controversial matters between fraternities, representing the fraternities to the college, investigating new fraternities desirous of entering the campus are among the duties of the council. The bonfires for pep rallies during football season were prepared by the council in an effort to increase school spirit. Interfraternity athletics provide competition between the fraternities and provide an interesting supplement to the regular intramural program of the college. Robert A. Moody is the faculty sponsor. So was named the forty-fifth active chap- ter of Alpha Omicron Pi, national sorority which celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1947. Founded at Barnard College, Columbia Uni- versity, in 1897, Alpha Omicron Pi is marked by a simplicity unusual in Greek-letter societies. This is seen in the absence of a crest and in the single fraternity color, cardinal. The flower is the Jacqueminot rose, and the jewel, the ruby. At Centenary A O Pi is well represented in all campus activities. The group is now plan- ning its house, which is scheduled to be com- pleted by next fall. Chi Sigma sent an outstanding contribution to the sorority ' s philanthropic work, the social ser- vice division of the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky. This includes ail types of help for the people of the practically inaccessible por- tions of the Kentucky mountains. Members and pledges of Alpha Omicron Pi are Jean Bentley, Marjorie Bogue, Ann Bowdon, Norma Britain, Ann Byrne, Mary Jane Callahan, Martha Julia Haley, Mary Holtzclaw, Loraine Jordan, Louise Lowe, Carolyn McKinney, Col- leen Moore, Betty Moppert, Alice Murray, Jackie Rembert, Catherine Sale, Laura Ann Taylor and Martha Zagst. Its primary purpose is to regulate rushing and maintain a cooperative spirit among the sororities. Initiation ol the preferential bid system for rushing is among the major accomplishments of the 1947-48 Pan-Hellenic Council. This system is planned to simplify and shorten rushing and to make the rush season more pleasant for sorority members and rushees. A constitution was drawn up by the Centenary Coun- cil, with working constitutions from other councils used as guides. The addition of an alumnae adviser from each so- rority to the Pan-Hellenic Council is another innova- tion of this year. The advisers act as mediators be- tween the Centenary Council and the Shreveport Pan-Hellenic. Members of the Pan-Hellenic Council for 1947-48 are Ann Byrne, June Despot, Betty Downs, Jean Marie Entrikin, Bettye Fletcher, Betty Flournoy, Jackie Gaines, Martha Julia Haley, Lei Hamner, Loraine Jordan, Sally Lindsay, Louise Lowe, Sharon Miracle, Shirley Petree, Rose Audrey Randall and Pattie Jean Warren. In addition to its benefits to the individual, education bestows the burden of responsibility. For the future of our country depends in large measure upon the graduates of our colleges and universities. As a bank, we have an important responsibility to our community. For the success or failure of any business depends upon soundly conceived financing. It is this principle that governs our banking operations. Commercial National Bank Member F.D.I.C.
