PR p June 9, 1945 To the Class of 1945: ' ' ' hundreds of our young friends bring to Every year at this time, even during war, h U ' ces Here at Centenary we have had happy hours toget erg a close their college experien . You them, you will fin a ea o y will be pulled this way and that, expected to do dozens of things and all at the same time. The crucial phase of this situation, either in or out of college, can be phrased in . . h. the form of two questions: What will you choose to do? How will you do those t ings which you choose? These answers which I cherish for you are these: first, choose to do those things ' l ' h ckless abandon which the world needs most to have done, second, give yourse ves wit re to the accomplishment of these objectives. Part of our trouble frankly is that we think ch about ourselves There is a current play entitled The Searching Wind which too mu . presents the wind of social and economic upheaval which is blowing fiercely in all parts ' l f of the world today. It is a good play. One of the characters suggests a great dea o our current difficulty in these words: We are an ignorant generation. We see so much and know so little, maybe because we think about ourselves so much . . . Everybody thinks about himself, no matter what happens. I hope this concern about self will not be characteristic of members of the class of 1945. It has certainly not been true of you during your life here. When you have seen at need, you have sought to provide for it. You have helped to build a standard of student life and .government of which we are proud. You must continue to live this way. During our two years here at Centenary he has given us Wisdom and understanding which has helped prepare us for the future. You have been inspiring friends and grand sports, everyone of you. Do you remember the baseball game we had in the Grove on the first Guild picnic? Confidentially, you were much better players than we had thought you would be. We were one surprised bunch of girls when the final score was decided. And do you remember all the little tricks we played on you in your classes? They weren't very originalg a lot of them must have seemed pretty silly to you. But when you laughed and played along with us, you were our friends for life. We'll never forget the lessons you have taught us. Centenary was a lot different from high school. We had many new people to meet, and new customs with which to become acquainted. We were so anxious to make friends. And you were always so friendly yourselves and so helpful that in a few weeks we felt as though we had been here all our lives. . Regardless of how far we travel from the Ivied Halls, we shall remember your patience, your kindness, and your thoughtfulnegg, THE FACULTY HURST ROBINS ANDERSON, B.A., M.S. .... .,A,,,.,, p ,.e,,,ge,,, MARGARET ELLEN HIGHT, B.A., M.A. ....... , .,, ,.,,,,,,,,,,.', Dem FREDERICK ARTHUR METS ........E... ........ We have learned not only the dramatic side of the stage, but also the technical, working side backstage-and we've loved every minute of it. We have produced three short plays, Star Struck, Evening Dress Indispensablef and Strength of the Weaklingsj' a Christmas and an Easter pageant, and two major pro- ductions. We have had a grand time together, and we hope that the Centenary Players of 1946 will enjoy as profitable a year. Our Radio Workshop has also been working over- time. In addition to all the radio programs that we have written and produced just for our own class, we have taken part in four 15-minute programs on WEST in Easton and two 30-minute programs on WAAT in Newark. The Easton programs were planned, written, timed, and presented by our class. The Newark programs were spontaneous quizz presentations about topics of interest to college stu- dents. We'l1 be expecting the Centenary Workshop to have a regular program of its own some day soon. The first and third Monday evening of each month will find about forty of the Book Club members assembled at the home of Dr. and Mrs. DuBois for a meeting - and what a meeting! Each gathering centers about a resume of a novel, biography, or perhaps a current best-seller about which one of the girls has offered to tell us. The Letters of World War I, written and narrated by Dr. DuBois, were masterpieces and certainly hit home, didn't they? We won't forget those right away! We must mention the wonderful refreshments prepared for us by Mrs. DuBois-especially that never-to-be-forgotten fudge! And, speaking of food, the picnic supper held at the Palmers' was super and the round-robin of songs ended the affair beautifully. t The ofiicers for this year are: Prericlemf, Nancy Anderson, S ecremry, Ruth Kulpg Treasurer, Virginia Kulp. is l ll!! The auctioneer's voice rang out in the b on lounge on the night the International Relations Clu put its auction. I Did you ever laugh so much? ds most of its time studying serious Our club, however, spen uestions of world affairs. Such topics as post-war planning, ound table, the good neighbor policy, U. N. R. R. A., foreign policy, and the race problem are some Cl the Latin American r of those discussed. The good neighbor policy struck home whenlon February 21, Dr. Custard, our advisor, left C. C. to go as an exchange teacher to Chile. . One of the biggest events of this year was the Middle At- lantic International Relations Club Conference held at Mary- wood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Several representatives in order that we might profit from the knowledge they gained. from our club were sent there. They brought back a report Lee Boudinot is President, Nancy Briwa is Vice-president, Mary jane Conover is Secretary, Gloria Hackeling is Treasurer, on what haPPened and Alice Worthington is Sergeant-at-Arms. 72 FRENCH CLUB The French Club spent most of the first semester planning and producing the annual French Cabaret. It was a lot of hardy work, but everyone felt that it was worthwhile because it was such a big success. Remember how amazed everyone was when they saw the huge gym transformed as if by magic into a low, dusky cabaret? There were just enough little round tables for each girl and her date, and the music and entertain- ment was lots of fun. Those darling cigarette girls with their bouncy red, white, and blue skirts added much to the atmos- phere! The French Club members have also knitted a lot of socks, sweaters, and baby sacks for the French War Relief. We really enjoyed doing it and are proud of the large box of knitted garments that is all packed and ready to be shipped away. Some has been hard work but fun, too! Clara Corell is Prefideng' janet Cady is Vice-preridenh' Alys Reese is Secretary, and Colleen Delaney is Treasurer, SPANISH CLUB So you think you can beat the experts? Ever try Informa- tion Please in Spanish as we did at a couple of our meetings? The Spanish Club was started by Genevieve Diaz last year, with the aid of Papa La Motte. This year the club has Miss Goddin as its very able advisor. at Did you ever stop to think that all South Americans aren't tall, dark, and lazy? just as those are fallacies, we found out that all North Americans are thought to be blonde, blue eyed, and freckled! I At Christmas, the different holiday customs of Mexico, Puerto Rico and Panama were presented by Miss Goddin, Genevieve, 7 and Velma, respectively. A A series of lectures were given on the cultures of the different Latin American countries. Genevieve Diaz is Prefidemg' jean Collins is Vice-prexidentg Louise Soule is Secrem1'y,' jane MacLardy is Trezzfurer, and Anita Cordes is Sergeant-df-Afmf' 73 THE CHORUS If the Chorus continues to grow as it has this past year, it will certainly soon be too big for Whitney Hall. At our first rehearsals, we discovered that we were too large a group to practice profitably together. Therefore, we became two choirs. Every other Sun- day the Freshman Choir sang the chapel service, and every other the Senior. iThe competition we gave each other did us good. However, the two choruses did not always sing separately. We joined forces the afternoon the Stevens Glee Club was here. What a concert that was! W We enjoyed hearing the Stevens group sing very much. We sang the last few chapel services together and did some of our favorites, Pilgrims Chorus and The Last Chord. Baccalaureate music was sung by the whole chorus also. But when Commencement rolled around, we Seniors were willing to bow out and let the Freshman Chorus sing our farewell. We've had a busy, happy year together. Best wishes for the continued success of the chorus we know and the one that is to come. ii I x THE GUILD Reprerematiifef Barbara Adams Mary 'jane Conover Alison Carpenter Jane Bobilin Janis Haines OFFICERS President ..,........ ....................,. ..... The Guild is Centenary's religious and philanthropic organization. It has contributed much to local, national, and international societies. The Guild is one of the clubs in the school which has one hundred per cent member- ship, and we are very proud of this record. Without the interest and cooperation of all of the girls, we could not have accomplished as much as we did. We opened our season with a huge picnic in The Groveg every member of the faculty and the student body was invited to attend. We had plenty of good things to eat, open fires, perfect weather, a few late-season swimmers, and, to top it all, a faculty-student baseball game that, to this day, remains one of the high spots of the year. We sponsored d h l or anizations.
