A charter had been granted by the legislature April 18, 1831, to the President, Directors and Company of the Chautauque County Bank. Leading citizens of the county were intensely interested in the new financial institution then being established in the wilderness, The schools of that time were not so many nor so good as now. Generations of boys and girls have grown into business life since then. Upon leaving school thousands have made use of the old coun- ty bank in getting a start in life.
