ORIGIN OF THE BLUE DEVILS There was in France, during World War 1, a regiment of soldiers known as the Blue Devils . This regiment was composed of the youth of France. Only the strongest, both mentally and physically, could pass the rigid examination required to become a Blue Devil , They wore a royal blue uniform, trimmed in White. This regiment was the crack regiment of France. Its members--the Shock Troops . They were the first to go over the top . When an attack was imminent, the Blue Devil regiment was sent for and hurled themselves into the breach to check the onslaught of the enemy. This regiment took no prisoners, it never flinched, nor falteredg it always went forward. True, at times the Blue Devils went down, but they always fell with their faces toward the enemy. While the Blue Devils were courageous on the battle field, they were no less chivalrous when back of the lines. They were always respectful of women, the aged, and those in Authority. They respected the rights of others and their prop- erty. The students of the Celeste School possess all of their characteristics in a marked degree. They are honorable, reliable, honest and courageous. They are respectful, chivalrous and courteous. Last, but not least, they will not QUIT! Win or lose, you are proud of them. They are no less ladies or gentlemen whether losing or winning. They treat their guests as honored visitors. Celeste High School Blue Devils always make a visitor feel welcome, at home, and glad that he came to our school. The emblem is Royal Blue on a white background. These are our school colors. The emblem shows the Blue Devil attempting to thrust his pitchfork into some invisible enemy. This invisible enemy is Unsportsmanlike Conduct. His face is wreathed in a sardonic smile, showing his contempt for quitters and whiners. A true Blue Devil stands for everything that is high and noble and destroys with his pitchfork all that is weak, little and degrading. just as the Blue Devils of France establisheda world-wide reputation during the war as the hardest fighters and the cleanest soldiers, so, are Celeste students establishing a state-wide reputation for teams that never quit playing and students that never quit being courteous and hospitable. Ev! DEDICATIO MR. LLOYD PRESS To Mr. Lloyd Press, whose leadership has inspired us to greater effort, whose teaching has stimulated our learning, whose guidance has directed us into the realm of good sportsmanship and fair play and without whose untiring effort this volume would have been impossible, we gratefully and affectionately dedicate this book. For you see, they are the parents of the 1949-50 Seniors of Celeste High School. To them it seems such a short while ago that they watched their excited daughter or son as they started out for their first day in school. Eleven years ago to be exact two mothers dressed their pride and joy, and sent them on their way to an educational career. They were Betty Harrell and Billy Compton. A friendly little boy by the name of Elmer McNeely from Wolfe City, joined them in the fourth grade. To brighten up the class even more, Tommie Giles came from Farmersville to join them in the fifth. The others joining them in the fift grade were Tommie Hunter from Midway and A. W. Cunningham from Savoy. Patsy Lyday came from Midway in the sixth. Velda Raper, from Greenville, joined in the seventh. Louise Horner from Prairie Hill and Donald Carter from Merick entered the class in the eighth grade. Those transfering into Celeste in the ninth were: Leora and Loura Lincy- comb, Doris Peebles, LaWanda Lamm, and Bobby Brooks from Kingston. Donald E. Carter from Kinser and C. T. Lanier from Lane. Helen Wilson also joined the class in the ninth grade from Gainesville. We have had many wonderful teachers throughout our eleven years. To them we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation. We are all sure that if these seniors will work together, with whomever they become associated in the future, as well as they have done their eleven years of school, they will be very good men and women of tomorrow. h Pres!
