Hwfball Summary Teaching so much in so little time was the problem for Howard Doc Ayers when he took over the Cedar- town Bulldogs in late August. However, with valuable assistance from Ralph Red Simmons and Lester Williams, who served as line coach and backfield coach, respectively, he slowly molded together a hustling team from a group that had started out only as young, inexperienced boys who were Uvill- ing to learn. Alton Gilmore, Gene Sorrells, and Bobby Broome were named by their teammates as Co-Captains before the season got underway. These boys repaid their trust by displaying excellent leadership and sportsmanship throughout the entire season. The long-awaited season began when the Bulldogs lost a 25-7 verdict to Rossville. Many loyal Cedartown fans saw the Bulldogs fight back from a two-touchdown deficit in the first half, threaten twice again in the third period, and then lose when Rossville pushed over two fourth-quarter tallies. This loss only seemed to make the Bulldogs more determined to win over West Fulton the following week at Gray Field. lt looked as if all the hard work on the practice field might pay off when West Fulton could only manage a 20-19 lead at halftime. But the Atlanta school opened up steam in the second half and powered to a 32-19 victory. Marist came to Cedartown the following week expecting a pushover but were lucky to escape with a 20-6 win. Next, Cedartown traveled to Spalding and lost a 14-7 decision in one of the better defensive ball games of the season. The expected came when the Bulldogs returned home the following week to play Dalton. Unable to keep up their pace, the roof caved in and Dalton waltzed to a 39-13 victory. However, proof that the Bulldogs' earlier games were no flukes came the following week in Marietta. The Blue Devils scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the game when Cedartown came roaring back with two quick six-pointers. Marietta managed to win 14-12 on the strength of two extra points. Another heartbreaker occurred the following week at Gray Field when Griffin scored on a desperation last-quarter pass to win 19-13 when it looked like victory was in the bag for Cedartown. The big night finally came on November 2 when the Bulldogs powered past Cartersville 12-6. Favored Rome also received a iolt the next week when Cedartown went ahead 12-O at the half, only to lose 20-12 in a hard-fought game. Rome's final touchdown came on the last play of the game, which is a better indication of how hotly con- tested the game really was. And then came the practice for the big game-the annual Thanksgiving classic with neighboring Rockmart, our arch rivals. The Yellow Jackets were given a slight edge, on past records, but with Cedartown playing at home some folks wondered. With an over-flow crowd impatiently awaiting the kickoff, Cedartown started showing their stuff from the very start and by halftime were ahead 26-O. Ayers played every member of the team, but, even with this, Cedartown wasn't to be stopped, and when the whistle sounded the scoreboard read: Ceclartown 40-Rockmart 6. A WONDERFUL ENDING TO AN ENJOYABLE FOOTBALL SEASON!
