1955 BASKETBALL HOOP-HIGHLIGHTS The Cedar Vale Bronchos entered the 1955 Basketball season with high hopes. Returning from the '54 season were nine first team players In two pre season pracuce games the Broncs drubbed Grenola 66 22 and '70 15 In the openmg game of the season the Cedar Vale team 1ourneyed to Peru and was defeated 61 60 The Purple and Gold came back strong the next two games and handed Elk C1ty a 71 58 defeat and trounced Dexter '74 31 both games bemg at home Meetrng therr chief nval Sedan, the Broncs were handed then second defeat of the season 6'7 55, at Sedan The next game was wtth the unbeaten league leading Howard Prrates at Cedar Vale The Bron chos played then best game to date and handed Howard a 61 54 setback After edgmg out the Leon Lrons at Leon by a 45 44 count, the Broncs began rollrng and lowered the boom on Burden '72 48 and on Molrne 82 49 Both games bemg at home Entermg the Molme Tournament, th Bronchos came from behind to down Longton 67 57 and repeated the tuck m handmg Leon a '78 63 defeat Cedar Vale met the Howard team agam tn the fmals and after a thnllmg game were dropped '74 '71 The second place trophy whrch was awarded was the fust basketball trophy won by Cedar Vale smce 1952 Going back into the league play the Broncs repard Peru for thetr earlrer loss by a rousmg 99 43 score The Cedar Vale team then Journeyed to Elk Crty to set back the Red Devil quintet 65 58 Meetmg Sedan on the Cedar Vale court the Broncs caught fue and redeemed themselves wlth a 82 39 vrctory At thls time Cedar Vale held undisputed second place and were faced wtth the task of stopping the powerful Howard team whrch hadn' lost a game on their home hardwoods tn three years Cedar Vale started off good and were only behmd one trme in upsettmg the Prrates 63 58 At the ume this annual went to press the Broncs had two more league contests and one non league game left In the seven games played to date, at home the Broncs have rolled up a total of 541 points to the opponents' 322 This is an average of '7'7 3 pomts per game to 46 for the opposing teams In away from home games 1t's a dtfferent story and odd as tt may seem both Cedar Vale and the opponents have totaled 288 pomts over the ftve game span The Broncs have won three of the games wlule losmg 2 In the Moline Tournament the Bronchos rolled up 216 pomts compared wtth the Longton, Leon, and Howard total of 194 BASKETBALL ROLL CALL John McGlasson 6' Senror Guard Johnny has been the sparkplug throughout the season and hrs Jack Foster 5 11 Sentor Guard Jack has been the outstanding defensrve man dunng the season and ts the best ball handler on the team Drck Wtlltams 6'2 Senror Center Drck was held out the frrst of the season wrth a knee 1!l1l1I'y recerved rn football Hrs return w1th great hook shot abrlrty and strong reboundmg has had much to do wrth the Broncs present t1e for fust place Bob Hays 6 2 Sentor Center Bob'scons1stent reboundmg and offensrve work under the basket helped Cedar Vale to out rebound taller opponents Roy Walkmshaw 5'11 Senror Forward Roy after much rmprovement made the starttng team as forward and uses aone hand Jump shot Bob Cable 5 9 Sentor Guard Bobby has been the center of the fast break and rs very adept at ball stealmg Wayne Woodruff 5'11 Senror Forward Wayne was startmg forward trll a wrist rnjury put htm out for the season He was a good rebounder and Jump shot artrst Ross McConaghy 5'9 Sentor Guard Ross plays on both teams and scores w1th a set shot Cecrl Green 5' 10 Semor Forward Cedar Vale's reserve strength rs arded wtth Cec1l's set shot and strong reboundmg Gordon Thompson 6' Juntor Forward Gordon IS a strong rebotmder and good shot Robrn Kunkle 6' Senror Center Robin adds much to the Broncs' reserve strength and counters wrth a soft one hand Jump shot Thrs page sponsored by THE CANEY VALLEY ELECTRIC COOPBIATIVE ASS'N , INC . - - . , . . - . - . . . . . e - .
