Soon we Z? must leave the little sheltered path and pursue the great 'Egg gl white road ahead. And, as we look at the sign of the Yaoi if :Q crossfroads and hear the woodpecker's tapping and the Mi FTW red bird's song on the cherry tree five paces back, a gypsy longing Hlls our hearts to retrace the steps of our schoolf hood vagabondage and to take Memory's trail, a trail of twelve long years at the dear old Grove. We are older now, my companions. Long ago we left our playing in childhood's garden and turned the bend of the road to our school days. One day a party of five tiny travelers came to the Grove. There were two little cousins, shy and trembling, who called each other Ditty and Minion , a pudgy little blonde with great blue eyes whom we addressed as Tooty , a smiling, loving Julia , who felt quite safe bef cause she was with big sister Mary , and a chubby little youngster who never worried and ever laughed, one Gertrude , and a dear little dark haired Peggy . At the big door a gentle dark robed lady wearing a dear little black cap received us kindly. Later this good lady worried weary hours away lest we should not safely pass the brambles of big spelling words and multiplication tables . But after a while, the path seemed straighter, our m's looked more like 'Lm's and only such brambles as automobile pricked our tender feet. Weeks passed and we plodded steadily along our way. Then it was that we perceived in the distance a beautiful tree with the greenest of green branches lifted to the sky. For days, our eyes lovingly sought it on the misty blue horizong for days, we climbed the hill of Little Sacrifice that led to it. Then, at last, we came upon it and clad in the spotless white of purity embraced the Tree of Life in First Communion. Then, when we crossed to the third grade, another little traveler joined us,ea little girl with long black curls who was known as Elsie . We passed rather swiftly along the road. Contest and Examination forests bravely and to weave beautiful bookletfgarlands ' from the flowers of Knowledge we had plucked by the wayside. One September morning as we turned the bend of the Fifth Grade, two little ladies armed with schoolfbags and pencilfboxes joined our forces. One was tiny with very black hair, Marguerite , by name, and the other a staunch little individual in red plaid who had no fear of fifth grades . Could this be anyone but Clare? Now a series of obstacles loomed ahead-two great bumps of difficulty,- Fractions and Parsing . They cost us a deal of thought but successfully we climbed over them. Mary Whitehead came just as we reached the sixth grade crossing. How she loved to run ahead of us on the way and catch those Butterf flies of Inspiration . These, joined with a tiny netfwork of fancy, made beautiful Compositions , We also learned that year to look across the water and to love the Emerald Isle very dearly. And then we passed on the Land of Good Deeds and here we found a new traveler, Mary Harrison. Every day there was Mass, Holy Communion, hours of silence, adts of Sacrifice. We were sprouting our wings those days. After a while a lovely new traveler, Dorothy Decker, we called her, came to us and we walked farther and farther along the road. Then we were initiated into the mysteries of crossing the stile to High School. Now eight more Wanderers asked to join our party. We submitted them to a close examination. Mary Helen's sweet dis osition immediately admitted her, and we knew we could have no dilllculty lovin Ethel's gentle smile. Jane's eyes gleamed with love for us all, and who could resist Dorothy's mirth? Marion Doyle was gentle and considerate of everybody, Kathryn Benson kind and sym athetic, and Florence won our hearts instantly. Last, but not least of tlhe eight, was brownfeyed stu' dious Ruth Bosken. Of course, We bade this interesting group 'oin our party at once. We climbed a rather steep hill then, often stumbling on such stones as Conjugations and Unknown Quantities . Some dis' tance from the top we found a Signfpost, Tenth Grade , and even here were two more travelers. Ruth Cunningham was just a bit shy, as she nodded to us, but Helen tossed her head and laughed, and we invited them to come with us, too. So the band of twenty travelers climbed higher and higher, passing Geometry and Biology , passing Cicero and Chemistry and, finally turning the bend to the Summit of Civics and General Literature . And for a time, we walked in the Valley of the Shadow. Our road, it seemed, was too long and steep for Margaret and Dorothy, and the Master of the Highway came to meet them half way up and lovingly guided them Home. Then we learned the saddest lesson of the high' road-that one must suffer and go on. Softly we bade Farewell to the two tired travelers who had grown weary of our path, and had sought that infinite trail which winds in and out among the stars and ends at Heaven's gate. l67l
