As such, the sutpport of the institutions of my F Church is one of my rst duties. For twelve years I have attended parochial and convent schools. To choose a Catholic college is to continue my earlier education, to ,I usa: ygj., Lg f ' ' entire y different atmosphere with ideas and standards radically different QV choose a non Catholic one would be to enter into an from those I have known, to spend at least a year acclimating myself to new surroundings. In a Catholic college my thoughts and adtions would be understood, and would conform, with a few changes, perhaps, to the thoughts and adtions of those around me. To adjust myself to the standards of a nonfCatholic college either I must greatly change or the college greatly change, and in all the history of the world the mountain has never come to Mohammed. The moral tone of the Catholic college is inhnitely higher. It affords greater facilities for the frequent reception of the sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion. Its students cannot escape the influence of the religious atmosphere of the place. The Catholic colle e is often much smaller than our nonfCatholic institutions. This is a drawback in only one regard, it can never offer as many courses as the greater state colleges can. The smaller Catholic college, however, has this advantage- greater attention can be paid, and is paid, to individual differences. In the subjects taught Catholic colleges in this country are officially recognized and listed on a par with any others. Perhaps the greatest reason for the choice of a Catholic college is the one expounded y Newman in his argument for including theology in the curriculum of a university. Behind the world, mental, physical, spiritual, is the power of God. We attend colle e to advance our knowlf edge. We realize that we have much to learn og Latin, mathematics, the sciences, man, etc. If we choose a Godless collegiate education we imply that either we think we know all there is to know about God, or that we care to know nothing more about Him. This is a blind and mis' taken point of view. To build up a knowledge of a subjedt without any consideration or regard for the Power that is behind it, is to build a house of cards which the first strong breath of primal reasoning will destroy. Lastly we face that old, old uestion, What doth it profit a man if he gain the whole world and sufir the loss of his own soul? We can' not evade the fast that higher education pursued at nonfCatholic colleges has been the cause of many lapses of faith. Would it not be far better, then, to go through life without a sofcalled liberal education than to run risk of impairing or losing the priceless heritage of our faith? Our busy hands fairly flew, For each one had plenty of work to do. Jule and Florence ran 'round collecting the cakes While Tootie sought candy, the kind that Ruth makes. As for the decorators, they, too, did their work And not once a task did anyone of them shirk, Mounted on ladders so shaky and high Stood Ginnie and Clare and Elsie and I With hammer and nails and needle and thread Putting up holly and big bows of red. The Christmas tree grand with its tinsel and lights Was Marion's work and little Dot White's. Mary Helen and Jane, our checkers so line, With Mary and Helen, kept the uests in a line While they put away with special care Each hat and coat of everyone there. Ethel and Kathryn and Ruth and Marguerite The numbers for lotto did loudly repeat, While brave Mary Whitehead ran 'round through the hall And quickly sold chances to one and to all. 'C53'fb3 Cf55'5b3Q5Q55XQ67Q35'fER that some people awake every morning to End it dark r, and cheerless7 There are some people who live in -' pf rooms whose furniture is colorless. There are others ' 'five ' ..,rg! whose rooms are so overdressed and colored that- well, they just look like a crazy quilt. Color in regard to one's environf ment is a wonderful study. Let us consider for a moment the Spanish and their home decorations. They use massive furniture so beautifully carved that it was graceful beyond doubt. Heavy woodwork, beamed ceilings, gay floorfcoverings and an absolutely unblemished white wall. The whole effect was both astounding and subduing. Can t you see how a fieryftempered Spaniard would react to such a setting? Let us take the French at the time of Louis XIV, gay, pleasure-loving people who chose the grays, blues and rose shades, because they had to esta lish an equilibrium. The exotic person, as the Oriental, naturally uses the black and the darin colors. The early Italians carried out the same idea of simplicity, as dir? the Spaniards, but to a more marked degree. Their p1ainness was depressing. Undecorated walls, ceilings, and floors, and smallfsized furniture contributed to this gloomy atmosphere. Let us come a little nearer home, to the English with the grand old manor houses. From the earliest times Englishmen were sportsmen and this is revealed in their houses. The spacious rooms with heavy carved oak furniture, huge fire lace with blazing logs and reat windows are charadteristic of the English. These houses were buii and furnished on a lar e scale yet find a more comfortable home you could not. Do you see time color in this icture? You wouldn't if there were great bare rooms, but the beautifiil luster of the oak, the old tapestry han ings on the walls, the burning logs, and the glowing embers in the fireplace, the bowls of ay colored flowers, and last but not least, the windows with the sunlight, greatest color of all, streaming through. Thus we see what an im ortant part color plays in our lives. We are told by chromo athic healers that blue is a powerful nerve sedative, and that orange andp the other warm colors create enthusiasm and interest. So it is with this in mind, together with the temperament of the person who is going to occupy it, that we ought to furnish the home. See to it that when you awake on that gloomy rainy morning bits of gay color will greet you and make you happy the rest of the day. L ,A 3- X., the time, these occurrences seeme tragedy itself, but rj fl Jil til 17, 7135251 now, as we gaze back from the end of the road, they ' - appear as humor in its highest form. For example there was Marion, who, weary and downfhearted after a day's fruitless work, entered a wellfknown surgical appliance concern, and looking meekly up into the face of a tall, overpowering individual, said,, We thought you might give us an 'Ad' , only to receive the brusf que reply, Oh, you did, did you? That's what you get for thinking. Then Virginia, who in her great desire to do something to merit success, resolved upon a sacrifice. With twenty cents as the sum total of her wealth, and half of it to o for homeward carfare, she heroically waved away visions of a cool regeshing ice cream soda and presented a poor beggar with a nickel. Mary Whitehead and Ruth Bosken had their adventure also! After a series of refusals they happened to pass a truck of empty barrels and whist!-their luck changed. At every stopping place thereafter they received the objedt of their quest. Will Gertrude ever forget the struggle she had to suppress her giggles when the president of one of our business colleges insisted upon showing her through his school, explaining the various departments in terms of such dimension that poor Gertie thought he was speaking Greek. Then, there was the miniature sand storm blowing from an alley which en' veloped and almost choked our three Musketeers , Clare, Gertrude, and Marion, as, weary and footsore, they painfully wended their home' ward way. Such tragic humor! We also number among us the usual, or shall I say unusual fortunate adfseekers . To hear the accounts of Elsie and Julia one feels that every business man they encountered greeted them with open arms and let fall a shower of silver dollars. We feel sure that the majority of their patrons offered to take two or three page ads. Of course, most of their success was due to their unusual courage. Who but our smiling Julia would be daring enough to walk through the portals of the biggea bank in the city, ask for the president, whom she had never seen, beam' l421 ingly give him her name, request an ad, and receive from the magnate of finance the soft sweet answer, Yes, Julia, we can do something very nice for .you. We'll take a fullfpage ad. Now, I ask you, who but Julia? Dolores' chief experience seemed to be getting caught in the rain. Every time she would decide to go to town the heavens would decide to feed the thirsty crops. Good for the farmer, but hard on Dolores! The adfsearch had its practical as well as its humorous side. It made our annual possible, it revealed to us the courtesy and friendliness of the business men of our city, it taught us many valuable commercial facts, and most of all, it inspired us with courage for future ventures into this field. Remember the lady across the road who so sweetly gave us the water? Remember how we decided to take a new road home, and taking it, discovered that we had so gloriously picnicked on cemetery land? Remember, then, how we wept and showered ifts on Marjorie, and bade her farewell? and remember, oh, remember, 510W we laughed when Marjorie never went away at all? And think of our million rehearsals for the Crusade Pageant! Our trips to Emery with our lunches tucked under our arms, our gilded ballet slippers, our first experiences in makefup, our daisy chains. What a happy memory for us now! Then, in our Sophomore year, Clare's Dodge? How it conveyed us, fifty at a time, hither and yon, and 'round the world! Remember the day when we went to the Westwood Botanical Garden and spent such an enjoyable afternoon in that retreat of unusual flowers? Who can forget our daily morning rush in the third year to beat the bell, when we'd have to wash our arms and necks the night before if we wanted to be clean. How we'd hop into our uniform, snatch a piece of roll, seize our books, kiss our mothers goodfbye and dash for the nearest street car. How we'd sometimes catch it and breathe freely, and oftener miss it and spend the next halffhour in desperate prayer. Remember how black and funny the girls would look on the cinder path as they'd rush in, single file? Can our teachers ever forget our ingenious excuses? Remember the race jane and Virginia had with the points on the blackf board? Remember Ruth Cunningham's perfect record? Ah, memories! Remember, too, one Washington's Birthday our hike to Devil's Back Bone? And remember COh, Gertrude doesj, the awful dog that insisted on following her and barkin at her all the way? And then, at the end of the third year, we decided to have a class picnic. Everyone was to meet the rest at the Coney Island boat with enough edibles for the Salvation Army. Remember, four reached the boat and one Virginia missed it? Then, we Went swimming for hours and hours while Virginia, with two dozen peaches under her arms, wan' dered from one end of the island to the other, tearfully seeking us. Don't you remember? Remember our many journeys to St. Xavier plays when we climbed l52l EMEMBER, Way back about a million years ago when we Ex were in the seventh grade, the picnic we gave for Mar' '! ,. . . - . k so high in the gallery we never could hear a word and remember, oh, you must remember, the lovely compositions we wrote on them the next day? Then, who does not love to think of our trip to the Mount on Half lowe'en of our Senior year? The array of costumes, the clever little dancefpro rams, the charming hospitality of the Sisters and girls and the wonderful time we had that night! Do you remember that mornin previous to the Christmas Sale when we were delegated to buy up little toys for the children? We visited varous stores, but our quest was not fulfilled until we had trudged into that quarter of the town popularly known as 'LOver the Rhine . There we bought all we needed and turned our steps homeward, but getting our little treasures home was no small task. The baby doll was the prize urchin. Every time we struck a bump, and they were numerous, she would wail Mama like a lost soul. We giggled, people glared, and babyfdoll wailed the more. Do you remember how we limped from the bus with a sigh of relief and wended our way to the hall, where eager hands unwrapped our prizes and immediately put them on sale: Five cents a chance, three for a dime. Remember? Remember, too, the night we went to jane's, ten of us, five valises and two ukeleles in a fivefpassenger car. And oh, the lovely evening we spent there with the many clever games and beautiful prizes. And then, there was a thrilling journey to a JuniorfSenior Banquet. We shall never forget the delicious dinner, the lovely souvenirs, the beautiful program, and the hospitable spirit of the girls. Then came the twelfth of June when, at the end of our journey we were welcomed into the Alumnae of Mt. St. VincentfMt. St. joseph. All our lives, the memory of this day will inspire us to be as representaf tive of our dear Alma Mater as these our older sisters have been in the past. And now, we set out on our last journey together. Our graduation dresses, our flowers, our medals, our diplomas accompany us and this fifteenth day of June, 1926, twenty graduates journey down a winding path through iron gates, a century old, seeking the mystery of the great white road beyond. One of the valuable accomplishments of the recent war is the world's realization of the capability of woman. This fact was established by the gradual steadfast hold she gained in politics. Woman Suffrage , her last step of advancement, has proved an uplifting influence in the modern, political world. How lovely a grandmother Gertrude O'Donnell pi 3413, was, sitting in a lowfbacked rocker with a woolen shawl,-A doin' nothin' but cuttin' carpet rags! No one would have recognized stately Mary Whitehead as Ezra of the big hat and big voice, thundering the evils of cordfwood . Ethel Kelly was charm' ing as Inez ef-ea wisp of a girl with many moods, ever followed, nay, shadowed by poor awkward Peter . And at all times Clare O'Hare was Peter , embarrassed, awkward, stupid, but a greatfhearted, selff sacrificing lad who had lots of conversation in him, when-when he got started . And then there were The Neighbors for whom Zona Gale named her plav. Marion Aull with her hair slicked back and her everlasting buflalofbug , Elsie Harris with her thousand ailments, a real Aunty Doleful , while Ruth Cunningham amused the house when she asked to take her Helevenfegg angelffood cake back home because her Ezra just thrived on angel food. Nor will we soon forget Ruth Bosken's excellent portrayal of gentle Mis' Ellsworth . It was, in all, a def lightful comedy, running from mirth to pathos at a moment's notice and showing our young actresses at their best. Helen Kuebler, '26 l 61 l Mannikin and Minniliinl' M Jswgq ntgwf HE first senior Dramatic 'attempt was the charming Bisque Play, Mannikin and Minnikin, by Alfred Kremborg. It , 7 bluwffi was a whimsical bit of poetry concerning the love of two Q Q china dolls who sat on either side of a mantel clock. Absolutely without action, with lines as fragile as a Fkliel QQW, breath of spring, it held the interest of the audience through every word. The setting was of enchanting loveliness, the ebony clock with silver face proved a wonderful background for the dainty yellow of dark Minnikin's bright gown, and the manly blue of Mannikin's lacefruflled coat resting on the slender figure of our fair Dolores A pleased audience proclaimed the little fantasy a marked success. How our audience laughed at Kathryn Benson and Marguerite Powers as they explained the piece. They turned neither to right nor left but in all seriousness, Kathryn told us what lentils were While Marguerite gurgled exactly like boiling water. Virginia Payne then appeared as Sir Davie Little Boy and took childish delight in everything that happened during the course of the play. Whoever dreamed that .lane Mollenkoph could be so regal or to distraught ? Mary Harrison's poise, her voice, her costume all conf vinced us of her histrionic ability as the Mime . When our little milkfmaid skipped down the aisle, she delighted the audience at first glance with her airy ways and her vvitching smile. No one but Helen Kuebler could have done the part quite so Well. The faltering step, and hollow voice of the L'Blind Man were well done and proclaimed Marion Doyle a promising character actress. And who have We here with the shining black hat and orange plume? It is Florence Holscher, the balladfsinger, and now we see the fruits of her daily visits to the Voice Studio. And then came julia Cronin! We shall not soon forget her fierce black beard, her gleaming armor, and her dreadful axe. She almost gave the poor little boy nervous prostration which required some splendid acting. This play, like the others was well cast, vvellfacted, and excellently directed, reflecting well deserved credit on Miss Eva Povvnall, who has coached the Dramatic Club during the year. And so they stumbled in, wayworn and tired, and, oh! the delightful rest this quaint house afforded. One beautiful program followed another. And then one beautiful mornin in May, a great celebrity came to the inn. All must take the test olg the road, and for two long weeks we waited in breathless suspense, and Enally, Signor Romeo Gorno proclaimed our wayside inn a tavern worthy of all travelers' patronage. And then we returned to our course, not quite as irksome now, rested, encouraged, delighted. Soon we Z? must leave the little sheltered path and pursue the great 'Egg gl white road ahead. And, as we look at the sign of the Yaoi if :Q crossfroads and hear the woodpecker's tapping and the Mi FTW red bird's song on the cherry tree five paces back, a gypsy longing Hlls our hearts to retrace the steps of our schoolf hood vagabondage and to take Memory's trail, a trail of twelve long years at the dear old Grove. We are older now, my companions. Long ago we left our playing in childhood's garden and turned the bend of the road to our school days. One day a party of five tiny travelers came to the Grove. There were two little cousins, shy and trembling, who called each other Ditty and Minion , a pudgy little blonde with great blue eyes whom we addressed as Tooty , a smiling, loving Julia , who felt quite safe bef cause she was with big sister Mary , and a chubby little youngster who never worried and ever laughed, one Gertrude , and a dear little dark haired Peggy . At the big door a gentle dark robed lady wearing a dear little black cap received us kindly. Later this good lady worried weary hours away lest we should not safely pass the brambles of big spelling words and multiplication tables . But after a while, the path seemed straighter, our m's looked more like 'Lm's and only such brambles as automobile pricked our tender feet. Weeks passed and we plodded steadily along our way. Then it was that we perceived in the distance a beautiful tree with the greenest of green branches lifted to the sky. For days, our eyes lovingly sought it on the misty blue horizong for days, we climbed the hill of Little Sacrifice that led to it. Then, at last, we came upon it and clad in the spotless white of purity embraced the Tree of Life in First Communion. Then, when we crossed to the third grade, another little traveler joined us,ea little girl with long black curls who was known as Elsie . We passed rather swiftly along the road. We were taught to face the l66l Contest and Examination forests bravely and to weave beautiful bookletfgarlands ' from the flowers of Knowledge we had plucked by the wayside. One September morning as we turned the bend of the Fifth Grade, two little ladies armed with schoolfbags and pencilfboxes joined our forces. One was tiny with very black hair, Marguerite , by name, and the other a staunch little individual in red plaid who had no fear of fifth grades . Could this be anyone but Clare? Now a series of obstacles loomed ahead-two great bumps of difficulty,- Fractions and Parsing . They cost us a deal of thought but successfully we climbed over them. Mary Whitehead came just as we reached the sixth grade crossing. How she loved to run ahead of us on the way and catch those Butterf flies of Inspiration . These, joined with a tiny netfwork of fancy, made beautiful Compositions , We also learned that year to look across the water and to love the Emerald Isle very dearly. And then we passed on the Land of Good Deeds and here we found a new traveler, Mary Harrison. Every day there was Mass, Holy Communion, hours of silence, adts of Sacrifice. We were sprouting our wings those days. After a while a lovely new traveler, Dorothy Decker, we called her, came to us and we walked farther and farther along the road. Then we were initiated into the mysteries of crossing the stile to High School. Now eight more Wanderers asked to join our party. We submitted them to a close examination. Mary Helen's sweet dis osition immediately admitted her, and we knew we could have no dilllculty lovin Ethel's gentle smile. Jane's eyes gleamed with love for us all, and who could resist Dorothy's mirth? Marion Doyle was gentle and considerate of everybody, Kathryn Benson kind and sym athetic, and Florence won our hearts instantly. Last, but not least of tlhe eight, was brownfeyed stu' dious Ruth Bosken. Of course, We bade this interesting group 'oin our party at once. We climbed a rather steep hill then, often stumbling on such stones as Conjugations and Unknown Quantities . Some dis' tance from the top we found a Signfpost, Tenth Grade , and even here were two more travelers. Ruth Cunningham was just a bit shy, as she nodded to us, but Helen tossed her head and laughed, and we invited them to come with us, too. So the band of twenty travelers climbed higher and higher, passing Geometry and Biology , passing Cicero and Chemistry and, finally turning the bend to the Summit of Civics and General Literature . And for a time, we walked in the Valley of the Shadow. Our road, it seemed, was too long and steep for Margaret and Dorothy, and the Master of the Highway came to meet them half way up and lovingly guided them Home. Then we learned the saddest lesson of the high' road-that one must suffer and go on. Softly we bade Farewell to the two tired travelers who had grown weary of our path, and had sought that infinite trail which winds in and out among the stars and ends at Heaven's gate. l67l Now, we have come to the crossroads, O Travelers. We are at the brow of the hill. A new white road stretches out before us, much wider, much longer, losing itself in the misty blue far ahead. Each must follow that trail alone, walking or riding, gaily or sadly, as the Master of the Highway decrees. So, travelers, adieu! Here's a smile and a song and a wish for success. Tuck it away in the depths of your trunk. Pay the toll of your school days at the gate and set out on the riband road. Think of us often and of the old trail and often we'll think of you and one day we'll meet at the end of the road, in a haven of glorf ious rest. On a midfwinter's morn if you choose the broad avenue where giant trees rear their heads in hoary grandeur, you will pass our two holly trees, standing side by side, their bright red berries peeping through rare green leaves. As you tread your weary way up the broad avenue you will notice our Blessed Mother's wayside shrine glistening with myriads of nature's snowdrops. Our farffamed tulip tree with its wide flung branches stands like an old sentinel guardin the approach of the Grove. Equally beautiful is the picture if you cioose the winding side path. Here the white silence is broken by the whistlin of the wind through the tall pines and the muffled sound of the old bell from its lofty tower.
