Zfomf Dearest Graduates : Well do I remember a September day in 1913. when I welcomed to my heart a little group of new-comers. Among them were tiny Helen Puttman. her golden hair gleaming in the morning sun: Mary Schulte. a little braver than the rest. comforted by the presence of an older sister. and dispensing cheery smiles to her tearful companions: Kathryn Duclclo. her big blue eyes wide with fright: Esther Phelan. biting the corner of her little white handkerchief: chubby Rosemary Olberding. clasping tightly her motheris hand. Mary Healy. with her tear-stained eyes. was seelcing a corner in which to hide. while Victorine Ott. with quivering lips. repeatedly besought her mother not to desert her in this dreadful hour. Last was timid Margaret Brinlc. blushing crimson. as she was placed nfor the pre- sent... on a little red chair before the teacheris desk. Five years later there was added to your number a bright and smiling miss from St. Peteris Cathedral School. whom you all came to lcnow and love as Virginia McCue. The year 1918 also brought with it the additional gift of two amiable classmates.one of whom had come from the Academy of Notre Dame. Anne Hassett. and the other. Catherine Folcen, from St. Boniface School. During the next two years I welcomed Mary O'Hare of St. Lawrence and Patricia Sharlcey of Holy Family. Thus closed the grammar grades for the Class of '24. In that space of eight years. how time had transformed you from little children to tall young girls. in the springtime of life. on the threshold of High School. Page Ninelc n At last the day arrived. which was the dawning of a new life. Time shall not dim that scene which I witnessed this September day of 1920. Vividly I can see you. on your first day in High School. olaviously conscious of the new dignity. but withal a little frightened and-bewildered. Waiting to he welcomed hy you as classmates were eight others. timid in their new surroundings. A larief exchange of introductions revealed the names of your future companions. St. Lawrence School had sent its honor pupil. Catherine Fallon. and from St. Williamis had come Ada Brinclc and Grace Wohlnen. Distance mattered not to Lillie Mae Grause. who came from St. Boniface. Cumminsville. Lucille O'Neil was from the Cathedral. St. Michael's School sent two pupils. Loretta Reber and Alma Messer- schmidt. and from the Holy Family School had come Mary O'Brien. A The timidity of the new-comers vanished hefore the cordiality of the teachers and the 'sold girls . and all were ready to settle down to mastering the hardships common to the first year of High School. But the taslc was not so strenuous after all. and before long you found yourselves victors in the first hattle of High School life. Encouraged and strengthened hy this victory. you were now ready to meet whatever trials and difficulties the second year might present. During the second semester your numher was increased when Emma Wesley. sweet and wistful. appeared one morning seelt- ing admittance to the class. As undergraduates. you welcomed another smiling. black- haired young lady from Sharonville. Nell O'Brien. Now twenty-three in numher. with the distinction of being the largest class in the history of Cedar Grove. you are about to leave the arms that would fain retain you. to go forth into a strange. uncertain world. your guide the principles I have endeavored to instill. And now. my dear Graduates. as I see you depart. I naslc God to inspire you with some great thought. some abiding love of what is excellent. which may fill you with gladness and courage. and in the midst of the labors. the trials. and the disappointments of life. lleep you still strong and serene... Though five years had passed. or more. when the meeting came to order And one rose the roll to call. It was found that five were alasent From the spacious study hall. Then when husiness all was over. The chairman gently turned And meelcly stated to the house. This meeting is adjourned. Then followed talks of yester year. The changes time had made. How in the world each found her place. How Fate had changed the plans we laid. First among the list of alasent. Kathryn Duclclols name is found. Off to foreign lands sheis traveled There Christ's doctrine to expound. With a group of Chinese children In a missionary school. There she learns and there she teaches The Great Teacherls golden rule. Far from out this radiant gathering Mary Healy finds a place. A daughter now of Mother Seton. The steps of Christ shels learned to trace Lillie Mae. whose golden warhling Had won for her scholastic fame. Now is studying voice in Europe And setting old Paree aflarne. And you hear how our Lucille A heauty contest won? She turned her steps to Hollywood To seek film fame or none. Page Twenty-Ihr e Page Twentyifour And what a great success sheqs made Upon the silver screens! She ranks today with Colleen More And other movie queens. Emma Wesley. too. is famous. In great affairs of state. In the Congress of our nation She's unequaled in dehate. On the verge of war with China On the score of immigration Emma held the floor for hours- Settled th' quarrel lay arbitration. Patricia Sharlcey. you remember. By Cupidis darting lance Wounded e'en in schooldays. Heard the call of sweet romance. Next month will find our Patty A hlushing bride and true. The groom? I need not tell his name All ltnow him. Why! Don't you? The same is true of Mary Schulte. Cupid soon her heart did claim And gently her lover whispered. Mary. will you change your name? Who could thinlc of picture sweeter- Mary sitting very still Lilce lairclie wee upon a tree She softly tweets. NI will. Ginnie. too. the class pianist. Has been married. Don't you see Daughter. who shares motherqs talent. Is a prodigy at three? Many marvel at this lbalay Who plays so wondrously We do not-we llnew her mother- So we say. nQuite naturally. So you see welve sent our talent To north. south. east. and west. our girls in every avocation Are ranlced among the best. But the girls who stayed in Cincy Have won the praise of all- When I tell you how they've prospered You'll rate their deeds not small. Alma.-surely you remember- Coulcl write the most romantic tales- Tenements and fairy princes. Thrilling sheilcs and desert trails. And now we see that these same stories Place her on the roll of Fame: Today the most romantic novels On their covers bear her name. 1 Did you hear about the painting In the Museum of Art- The one which bears on it the message Not by hand. but from the heart? A tribute rare to give a painting. We thought upon first sight. But when we heard 'twas Rosernary's we thought it rather slight. Victorine was always gifted With the art of dressing hair. Now she owns a beauty parlor on a fashionable square. She marcels and does shampooing. Rolls your coiffure high or low, But best of all she bobs your tresses. Oh. that's enough! Let's go. Esther. after years of training, Teaches scales and harmony, Pupils. even as their teacher. Know their worlc from A to Z. Esther we congratulate you! Your intellect and zest Forces us to quote the proverb, The smallest parcels hold the best... Ada. now a business woman. Can give you tips on stocks and bonds She knows every good investment Q No sooner than it dawns. Page Twenty-.sim So if you have some money. girls. And wish that it would grow., Just hand it to our Ada And the increase wonit he slow. Helen Puttman. now the mother Of a charming little boy. Her great intellect of school days Can rightfully employ. For where is knowledge needed more Than in a motherls heart? The child will e'er reflect the mother. Be her very counterpart. Loving Grace. e'en in our schooldays. Was so generous, kind and true. Cincinnati was a group of insignificant factories backed by monotonous rows of small houses. utterly lacking the variety of architecture that graces the homes of to-day. But the unattractive little town lay in a setting of exquisite beauty. for before it the Ohio drew its graceful. serpentine way and around it rose an amphitheatre of stately. forest-clad hills. crowning the loftiest of these was The Cedars . the home of Judge Alderson. Mrs. Alderson's sister. Mary Hewitt. who visited her in 1845. thus describes it in her boolt. Our Cousins in Ohiou: Their home was called 'The Cedars.: it was in the state of Ohio. on the banlcs of that noble river. which gives its name to the state. and about four miles from the fine city of -----. The Cedars lay upon a road which went on and on. through little clusters of houses called 'towns' and 'villes'. and by farms. and through woods. and across valleys and creeks. to nobody ltnows where. at least I do not. Well. a little way out of this road lay the Cedars. lt was a large. handsome. and somewhat commanding-looking place. a bricln house whitewashed. and one of the oldest thereabout. It stood on the highest land in the neighborhood. and yet it was only after having ascended the mile-long hill that lay between it and the river. as well as by observing that the cedar trees which surrounded it. and which gave to it its name. were land-marlcs to the whole district. that any one perceived how high it really was. This elevation. which made it blealc in winter. caused it to be breezy and particularly pleasant during the fervid heats of summer. The house. which. as I told you. was white. had green Venetian outside shutters to the windows. In front there was a large two-storied porch. up which grew. in wild luxuriance. a beautiful prairie rose. which in summer hung about it like garlands of flowers. On the sunny side of the house. which was consequently very hot in summer. there ran a broad piazza which. like the porch. was two-storied. so that both the upper and lower rooms opened into it. The piazza in winter was the favorite playplace of the children. and as it was shaded with vines and trumpet-creepers. it was in hot weather like a beautiful summer parlor. Here in the summer the family frequently tool: their meals. and often sat in the delicious moon-light evenings fill bed-time. As I told you. the house was at a little distance from the road. It stood surrounded by its own land. and in a beautifully smooth field called the 'lawn'. It was approached by an avenue of locust trees. and the lawn itself was scattered over and grouped with cedar and catalpa trees. which grew there to a large size. and which were. in fact. the remains of the primeval forest. Beautiful flower-beds surrounded the house. and others were cut here and there in the open lawn. which was kept nicely mown to a considerable distance round the house. and besides these. lovely flowering trees and shrubs grew in clumps and thicliets. among which seats were set and arbors made .....,...... Page Twenly-nine At the baclc of the house were the out-buildings: on the left stood a rather picturesque building called the wood-house. and upon the gable end of which was perched the little bird-house where the blue-birds came regularly every spring. Farther baclc was the farm-yard. and on a fine slope to the south. was the vineyard. The orchard lay side by side with the vineyard ............ NA gentle ascent from the vineyard was occupied by pasture land called the Far Meadows. which were bounded by a wood belonging to another proprietor ............ It was an unbroken portion ofthe primeval forest. and had been left uncleared purposely for a supply of fire-wood. and from this cause its beautiful timber was fast vanishing away ........... -. Its surface was brolcen into little dingles which. in spring-time were filled with flowers. There the children found. the blood-root. Solomonis seal of various kinds. phlox. or sweet- williams. the lovely lilac. and white collinsea. anemones: violets. white. blue. and yellow: the beautiful scarlet catch-fly. noli-me-tangere. and many other lovely flowers. There grew hiclioryl. maple. beech and walnut trees: the splendid American linden. the red-bud. or Judas tree. by the budding of which. in old time. the Indian regulated the sowing of his corn. The wild clematis. sweet-briar. and the American hawthorn. were amongst its abundant undergrowth: and here also were thiclcets of blaclcberries. In the autumn. hickory nuts. beech nuts. white walnuts. or butter-nuts. attracted our cousins to its pre- cincts. where. nestling among fallen leaves. they collected woodland treasures. or came home laden with perfect sheaves of golden-rod and various kinds of Michaelmas daisy. The northern boundary was lilcewise a wood. a beautiful upland covered with trees. In March. 1857. Mother Margaret. first Superior of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. bought this beautiful estate and on October 25th. Archbishop Purcell laid the corner stone ofthe new Mother House and Academy. to be lcnown as Mount St. Vincent. Cedar Grove. the latter having been the name of the Maryland home of Sister Sophia Gillmeyer. one of the first companions of Mother Margaret. His Grace celebrated the first High Mass in the present chapel on November 14th. At this time was erected only the main four story brick. The central portion. containing the auditorium and the Grade class rooms. was built in the early 70's owing to the need of a larger chapel and 'additional music rooms. The chapel was restored to its original location on the first floor of the main building in 1906. The two storied porch., of the original Cedars was replaced by a frame addition. con- siderably increasing the capacity of the Alderson Mansion . which was used as a Commun- ity House. The broad piazzau still stands. and in the early days it was for the Sisters. as it had been for the Alderson family. a favorite rendezvous during their brief periods of recreation. Many ofthe historic cedars have disappeared. but some remain and new ones are soon to be planted to justify the Academy's right to its beautiful name. The navenue of locust treesu is now a vista of over-arching maples. A part of the Npicturesque wood house . fstill standing too., the Sisters converted into a balcery. Just beyond this to the west. at the edge of the vineyard. the laundry was built in 1866. The second-story porch which appears on only one side of the structure now. originally ran around the four sides. and. with its wide sloping roof. must have given the building the appearance of a pagoda. The men's house.. had been built before this. In 1866. an adjoining farm of ten acres. lying to the east of the Academy grounds. was bought from a Mr. Hotchkiss and his house was fitted up as a home for the first resident chaplain. the Reverend H. Richter. D.D. The house. somewhat enlarged. still stands Page Thirly on Seton Avenue. Before this Professors from Mount St. Mary Seminary had attended to the spiritual needs of Cedar Grove. The Community now owned the spacious grounds from Glenway to St. Lawrence Avenue and from Gilsey to the Plymouth Church. where stood originally the gates of Cedar Grove. Among its household now are two venerated memhers who entered the novitiate here in the early '60's and have enalaled the present writers to visualize the Cedar Grove of those far-off days. A That section of Price Hill now Beech and St. Lawrence. was then a picturesque pond. girdled hy masses of wild roses. This the Sisters widened into St. Mary's Lake. enclosing Regina lslandu. and placed near hy shrines in Willow Glen and The Muses' Retreatu. Between Seton Cottage and this enchanting spot was the deer park. the gentle occupants of which were petted alike hy Sisters and girls. The eighty odd hoarding pupils spent many a pleasant evening strolling to Nst. Josephls Well.. whose crystal water huhhled up beneath the somber. towering cedars where Iliff and Glenway now meet. Still more attractive was the broad lane. now Academy Avenue. that led beneath the outspread branches of thick growing ever-greens. to the tiny. beautiful graveyard. at the corner of Academy and St. Lawrence. In October of 1858. Bishop Bayley. of Newark. NJ.. sent five young women to Cedar Grove to he trained in the religious life lay Mother Margaret. Their novitiate over. they returned to New Jersey. the nucleus of the Mother Seton Sisters of Charity in that state. After the election in July. 1859. Mother Margaret having been transferred to the charge of the Orphanage at Cumminsville. Sister Regina Mattingly was appointed directress at Cedar Grove Academy. On the first day of June. 1861. Cedar Grove sent forth the first hand of her angels of the lzaattle-fieldu. They were Sisters Anthony. Sophia. Bernadine. Alphonsa. Lawrence and Magdalen. As the pitiahle need increased others followed. until over twenty had left their posts in school. orphanage and hospital for na military career . as one of their numher facetiously expressed it. Owing to the reduction in its faculty no closing exercises were held at the Grove. The year the war closed. came another call to Cedar Grove for help on a mission at that time no less difficult and hazardous. Bishop Lamy. of Santa Fe. asked for Sisters to open a hospital. asylum and school in his episcopal city. In compliance with this request. four Sisters left Cedar Grove in August. 1865. and reached their destination without serious mishap. Not without hardship. however. as from Omaha on. a distance of a thousand miles and more. the journey was made hy stage. But the two Sisters who followed in 1867 encountered hoth Indians and cholera on the way. News of their capture lay the Red Man reached the Grove and loving hearts were wrung with anguish at the thought of their Sisters' fate. The sun shone again when word was received that the travelers had reached Santa Fe. wayworn hut otherwise unharmed. on August 15th. They had left Cedar Grove on May 10th. some years later. tithe Western Sistersn sent a unique gift to the Grove. lt was heralded as na Rocky Mountain canary . and great was the disgust of the Grove's handy man. Mother Margaret. shortly after the celebration of her Golden Jubilee fcharm- ingly described by Sister Mary Agnes in 'lMother Seton's Daughtersub. had returned to the Grove. an invalid. She was' not idle. however: her brilliant. cultivated mind was undimmed and Sister Antoinette tells with what youthful enthusiasm she taught the novices French. What is now the breakfast room was assigned to her use and many and varied were the visitors who wore its threshold. Thither would the Sisters come. as evening fell. to receive on their lcnees. the blessing of their venerated Mother. She lingered until November 11. 1868. Her death tool: place on Thursday evening. On Saturday morning. priests and students from the Seminary assembled in the Cedar Grove chapel to chant the Office for the Dead. Dr. Richter offered the Requiem Mass. and the Reverend Richard Gilmour. a friend of many years. delivered the sermon. The mourning nuns themselves. carried the body on a bier to the graveyard. Following the Sisters were the girls in black dresses and white veils. when the Sisters came to Cedar Grove. the community numbered about fifty. It had now grown to almost two hundred. and the novitiate was yearly increasing. Moreover. the number of pupils seelcing admission into the Academy could not be accommodated. The need of more commodious quarters was imperative. There was tall: of building at the Grove. but meanwhile the city was expanding and the fifty-six acres surrounding the Academy was coveted. Regretfully the Sisters parted with some of their cherished property and bought a tract of land in Delhi. There the new Mother House. Mount St. Joseph. was begun and thither the novitiate was removed September 29. 1869. . The proximity of Cedar Grove to Mount St. Mary Seminary had enabled the Sisters to study under the direction of its Professors. particularly Bishop Richter and Bishop Byrne. and when the novitiate was removed to Mount St. Joseph. the latter. defying inconvenience and real hardship. continued his lectures at this place. During the next three decades. the increasing population of the hill had created a demand for a day school which could not be ignored. and in 1906. the resident pupils were transferred to the newly-opened Academy of Mount St. Joseph-on-the-Ohio. and Cedar Grove became a day Academy exclusively. It is also the Community House for the Sisters teaching in the neighboring Parochial Schools. 1n the heart of Price Hill.
