A FLUTE AND A DRUM On April 3 many youthful aspirants traveled to lndependeuee for the distriet musie contest and returned packed with laurels in solos and ensembles. First plaee winners were: Dan liyneh, eellog Justin Nelson, tuba: Harry Fisher, pianog Jim Heskett, saxophoneg Carol Sc-haller, eornetg Jack Dilley, baritoneg Gordon l'aSebult, baritoneg brass quartetg brass sextetg and clarinet quartet. These musicians went to the state eontest at Vinton where the first three eontinued their winning' streak, making them eligible tor the super slate eon- test at Boone. In the fall, it one went to the nearest window he would hear the inarehing' band giving' torth a snappy tune on its Way to the football field To organize a new program for the next home game. This band, led by Natalie Handrup and her eorps of high-stepping majoreittes, added inusieal eolor and pep to the football games, putting on many an amusing and inspiring' program while the teams took a breather between halves. At every basketball gznne and pep meeting the pep band gave the c-rowd added enthusiasm and spirit to back the team. Every year the marching' band is invited to the Band Jubilee in Waterloo in May where all the bands of northeast Iowa get together in a gala day 'ot' parades and eoneerts. 1. Orehestra strings: N.
