First plaee winners were: Dan liyneh, eellog Justin Nelson, tuba: Harry Fisher, pianog Jim Heskett, saxophoneg Carol Sc-haller, eornetg Jack Dilley, baritoneg Gordon l'aSebult, baritoneg brass quartetg brass sextetg and clarinet quartet. These musicians went to the state eontest at Vinton where the first three eontinued their winning' streak, making them eligible tor the super slate eon- test at Boone. In the fall, it one went to the nearest window he would hear the inarehing' band giving' torth a snappy tune on its Way to the football field To organize a new program for the next home game. This band, led by Natalie Handrup and her eorps of high-stepping majoreittes, added inusieal eolor and pep to the football games, putting on many an amusing and inspiring' program while the teams took a breather between halves. At every basketball gznne and pep meeting the pep band gave the c-rowd added enthusiasm and spirit to back the team. Every year the marching' band is invited to the Band Jubilee in Waterloo in May where all the bands of northeast Iowa get together in a gala day 'ot' parades and eoneerts. 1. Orehestra strings: N. INEXPERIENCED GRIDDERS lVith only two returning lettermen to build his squad around, i oaeh Rabey, our new athletic director, began his task 'of testing eaeh individual prospect for the forthcoming season. The green and inex- perienced tearn ernerged from this year's schedule with a record of one win, one tie. and six losses. ln the first game ibetore one ol' the largest crowds ever assembled at Washington Park, the Tigers lost. a hard-fought game to an experieneed Oelwein elub by the score of l5 to 6. The touehdown was made by Fullbright after a long drive downfield. After' losing the next two games without scoring a point., the Tigers traveled to Vinton and defeated a stubborn Vinton team in a rough and tunrble a t't'air to the tune ot' 12 to 6.Here the outstanding play of baeks, Ceilley and lflullbright, led the Tigers to vietory. Returning horne the following week. i'edar Falls was faeed with the onee-beaten aggregation from VVaverly, After holding them to a standstill in the first halt, the weight and experienee ot' 'the Waverly team subdued the fighting Tigers, who went down in defeat by the score oi' 32 to 0. Horner-onring was highlighted by the football game with New Hampton with the honre team suffering a hitter one-point defeat, 7 to 6. Un a soggy gridiron at Osage, the Tigers and Green Vllave battled to a scoreless tie. Again at the elirnax of the season, rain prevailed over the game. Tire Cflarion Cowboys, perhaps one of the best ball-handling clubs we witnessed, defeated the Tigers 32 to 0. In the midst of gloom, Lyle llrooters rnade a 60-yard run for one of the finest exhibitions pro- duced by the Tigers all season. 36 Jack be nimble J ack be quick Jack the athlete's Really slick. 1 f A N. Skilled hands polished shoes. lloreulean museles carried hooks. The eaptives furnished 'food for the tyranlts' picnic. The survivors removed casts from broken limhs and went to the roller skating' party. A gay time was had hy all in both vertieal and horizontal positions. However, Mrs. Pratt and Mr. Nutting, the spon- sors, were not victims of any skating' catastrophes. The stars guiding' the class were Mona Larsen, Boll tlleason, Mir- iam Temple and Nancy VVri,Qght. In her sophomore year, Caroline Fleak passed away following a brief illness. Her sudden death cut into the hearts and lives of every person who knew her. lane Stum died on April 2, just a few weeks before graduation. During her extended illness she expressed her thoughts in a poem which her family and friends feel typifies her personality, MY WEALTH IS IN MY FRIENDS People shouldn't brag about their riches Or so I've been told. But maybe you'll forgive me When I talk about my gold. I've found I'm very fortunate And rich as one could be. Not because of the things I have, Not because of what you gave to me, But with all your little remembrances You have shown you remembered and cared for me. With diplomas not yet in their hands, the seniors reminisced over past years. Memories came floating back: the anguish ot' freshman initiation, the 'thrill of a first Homecoming, staging a Jr.-Sr. Banquet, senior picnic, and that last sad assembly in honor of Senior Day. Witli two swell sponsors, James Day and Richard Burns, the seniors experienced a wonderful last year. A-mong many other things, they jour- neyed to Devfl's Backbone for their traditional picnic, and on the last day of school put on a lterrific Senior Day program. And finally the seniors settled down to baccalaureate and graduation held on May 23 and 27, respectively. With a challenging speech by Dr. L. L. Dunnington of Iowa Cilty still in their minds, the senior class of 1948 marched out of high school life to the sad and stirring strains of Pomp and Circumstancef' This little senior went to collegle, Tliifs little senior went to work, This little senior just lfmfcd arovmfl, Ile ended up a jerk.
