DONALD TULLOCH School Phytician BENJAMIN IYGA Custodians ANTHONY SMYTHE FORETHOUGHT A school annual of the year 1943 will be valued not so much for what it presents to the eye while pages are turned, as for what it suggests to the mind after covers are closed. Therein will be reviewed those faces, scenes and activities of which yearbooks con- sist. Yet, laid aside, will the book record proof that America is worth fighting for? That the American system of education is worthy of its price? That youth will repay the debt, if debt it be? The spirit which motivates Owahgena 1943 is sincere and thoughtful. Perhaps when the pages are turned, the reader may note typical tendencies of youth — love for idling and sport; or even day-dreaming and vanity. Perhaps, and we so hope, that when the covers are closed, the reader may note still other tendencies of youth — an appre- ciation of school opportunities, a love for home and community, a consecration to the American way of life. r ' ■: : mini saomas CLASS OF JANUARY 1943 On January 25. 1943 was held the first mid-year commencement of Cezenovia Central School at which time seventeen young people completed the requirements for graduation and went forth to share in various duties of war-time service. The duties of air-raid wardens and airplane spotters and the requirements of nursing, nutrition, clothing and farm machinery courses, they have quietly fulfilled. The rationing program has been conducted very satisfactorily. A fund to which every member of the Faculty contributes one percent of his or her salary is distributed among worthy causes. War ■bond projects have received one hundred percent participa- [ tion. Extra hours, added instruction and increased effort have been gladly offered as well as continued interest in com- munity activities and civic affairs. Therefore, the Class of 1944 takes this opportunity to express the appreciation of the Student Body to the Faculty for vital service to our School, our Community and Our Country. r GIRLS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION The aim of the girls’ physical education program this year has been the im- provement of physical fitness of every girl to make her better able to meet the demands of a nation at war. This has involved the correction of defects, improve- ment of health habits and a study of correct diet as well as a more vigorous activity program. Every girl was first tested with the P.F.I. test to determine her physical status and those in the low brackets have had individual attention to try to ascertain the causes. The physical education classes have concentrated on large-muscle activi- ties to develop strength, flexibility and endurance and a series of emergency skills so that each girl could protect herself and others in case of emergency. The sports program has been expanded with leagues running both after school and during the activity period. Every girl is urged to play one or more sports and. so far. there has been about 90% participation. As in other years, our sports aim is: ’ A team for every girl and every girl on a team . Penoyer BOYS’ PHYSICAL EDUCATION Although the Cezenovie physical education program has always regarded interscholastic athletics as quite secondary to development of the individual, the transferring of after-school activities to a morning period has enabled complete student participation and almost entirely removed emphasis from the so-called sports. Such a plao means that every boy receives the benefits not only of individual instruction but also of team and group association. Besides the regular gymnasium program, a period of an hour and a quarter is set aside two mornings each week for boys who are transported by bus. For other boys two similar periods are conducted following the school day. Every high school boy is a member of a team, and intramural spirit is keen. The entire plan is complete in detail for both indoor and outdoor training. Furthermore, it is believed that inconveniences and disadvantages caused by war necessity have been capitalized upon at Coze- novia for the betterment of an already successful physical education program.
