DECK DEPARTMENT You can ' t talk about a Navy without talking about sailors, and you can ' t talk about sailors without talking about Boats- wain Mates. In this modern-day Navy of much scientific equipment and weaponry, someone still has to fulfill the traditional sailors ' duties of tying up to the pier, heaving around on lines to bring on fuel and supplies underway, safely loading and unloading the Marines and their equipment, as well as steering and keeping a sharp lookout during underway periods. The Boatswain Mates who perform those many jobs are also the men who wake the ship each morning with reveille and turn her in to rest each night with the sound of taps. The Gunner ' s Mate rating is not the oldest rating in the Navy but it rates near the top. The rating was established in 1797. Their duties include the operating, repairing and maintaining the 3 5 RF Gun Mounts and small arms with the associated magazines, ammunition, and ammunition handling equipment. The Gunner ' s Mate must be able to make detailed electrical, electronic, hydraulic and mechanical systems and servo - systems casualty analyses. The fact that these conventional guns can survive in the missile era attest to their great effectiveness. First Lieutenant
