During the first eight years entrances exceeded exits and in our seventh year the students from Eugene joined us. Our grade teachers were, Mrs. McLain, Mrs. Kirkham, Miss Holroyd, Miss Schwab, Mrs. Hill and Mr. Coleman. In the fall of l9h9 we began our high school career with a class membership of 33 under the sponsorship of Mr. Ratcliff During our freshman year we lost Harold Holycross, Orville Dowers, Dorothy Harvey, Rosemary Woodard, Bill Davis, Nancy Aldrich. Donnie Kendall moved to Rockville. In our Sophomore year, we had 26 members with Mr. Gibbs as sponsor. Donnie Kendall returned at the beginning of the second semester. We lost Bob Perry and Peggy Ellis during the year. As we opened our junior year in 1951, we lost Janie Walters, Wilma Priest, and Henry Sutliff, but Kathryn Tolley and Robert Harrison had joined the class, this making our enrollment 2h members. We began to plan toward our senior trip, and did several things to make money for this fund. We sold sandwiches, coffee, pop corn, stationary and served the Track dinner on the day of the County Track Meet. At the beginning of our senior year, Mr. Gibbs left us and Mr. Albright was elected sponsor. Only 22 students returned this year. Students who did not return were: Jean Evitt and Delores Hawn. Kathryn Tolley and Marjorie Devins left soon after school had started and Robert Harrison went to Schlarman at the end of the first semester,so 19 seniors will receive diplomas on May 27. Our senior year has been filled with work and play. We've sold candy and ice cream, magazines, served suppers and presented our Senior Play. We've enjoyed our trip to State Legislature and the other privileges accorded seniors. Our thanks go to our teachers, our parents, our griends and all who have made these twelve years very pleasant. This year, the Seniors are going to their Nation's Capital for the memorable occasion. They will leave Cayuga on May 30, to return June LL. Enroute they will travel through Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio, Zanesville, where the worlds only Y Bridge is crossed, and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The second day they will travel on the famous Pennsylvania Turnpike, sight-see at Gettysburg and Frederick, and arrive at Washington, D. C., this evening. In and around Washington, the group will tour many places of interest including the Capitol, F. B. I., Bureau of Engrav- ing, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian Institute and other places of note. They will visit Mt. Vernon, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Lee's Mansion, National Masonic Shrine, Municipal Airport, and Annapolis Naval Academy. The return trip will bring the class back across the mountains, through West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana. CLASS PROPI-IECY In the year of 1963, my husband and I decided we needed a maid, so we put an ad in the paper. To my surprise Elsie Wigley answered the ad, consequently we talked over old times. We decided to go to Don and Mary Stevenson's Drug Store for a coke. As we were talking with them, I found out that Doris Barker is now a movie actress in Hollywood. while watching television we saw Gene Weir, who is now boxing champ- ion, on his regular T. V. show from 10 to ll o'cloak. We heard that Gerald Adams is now playing fullback for the Chic- ago Bears. Susanne Neild is a missionary in India. . Iris Axtell is a nurse for Dr. Donald Kendall. Jack Mathews has become a famous jet pilot in the Air Force, while Jimmy LeClaire is a Seaman, First Class in the Navy. Judy Ashley has a position as secretary in Chicago where she has been residing for quite some time. Sharron Yoho is a telephone operator for the Bell Telephone Company, and Laura Ellis is a beauty operator. Elsie had a letter recently from Lanore and Dale Morgan who are now living on a large ranch in Texas. We also learned that Malcolm Deverter is running a gas station in Newport. As we finished our talk about the class of '53, we were sorry to learn that the last one, George Hooton, was still roaming the streets of Cayuga looking for a position. wk vwvwbvwiwwb zq I A JUNIOR CLASS lst Row Mr. Johnson, N. Varsity Basketball Although the 1952-1953 Varsity Basketball squad has had few wins and many losses, the boys have exhibited a fine school spirit and have nlayed good ball. Many of the losses have been by small margins and the fans have been treated to some very exciting games. The cheer section has done an excellent job and has helped to make the boys feel that the school was backing them, whether they lose or whether they win . Inexperience has been the team's greatest handicap and since the squad will only lose two men through graduation, next year's scores should read differently. Floyd Johnson, this year's basketball coach has done a splendid job of charting the team through their rather rugged season, and of keeping the team's morale at high pitch in spite of only four victories. Chief among these is the victory over Marshall in the Sectional Tourney at Rockville. In the second round of the Tourney, Rockville eliminated the Indians from further competition. The team consisted of Don Kendall and George Hooton, the Seniors: Max Hartman, Donald Brown, Ronald Kinderman, Bill Cook and Hartsell Newell, the Juniors, Karl Witsman and Tom Roush, the Sophomoresg and Phil Hughes, a Freshman. The 1952 Track season was filled with glory for the varsity squad and their coaches. It was the first time in many years that the track team has had such a splendid record The team won seven duel meets, lost three, and tied one. Most impressive, however, is the fact that four boys placed in the Sectional meet, two boys in the Regional, and one in the State. We captured sixth place in the Attica Relays and also in the Tiger Relays. The Championship trophy in the annual Vermillion County Track and Field Meet again come to Cayuga, who had a total of Shi points. James Belser set a new record for winning the high point award when he again received this honor, his third in three consecutive years. Ge also set a new record in the shot put at the County. His hew record stands at MB' 3iu. The high point award was won on three firsts--the broad jump, the shop put, and the 220 yd. dash. The four boys who placed in the Sectional were: Dave Adams, Jim Belser, Don McCurdy, and Butch Stark. Jim Belser Ind Butch Stark went on to place in the Regional and qualify for the State. Butch had the honor of making Cayuga's first points in a State Track Meet. GRADE TEAM ,, K. J :es Q. Q J C J .nffl . Front Row D. Devins, J. Kilgore, M. Foster, W. Edminston, V Marshall, H. Ellis, J. To be eligible for membership, students must demonstrate these four qualities and must also meet scholastic re- quirement of maintaining a NBN average throughout their high school career. If they have no semester grade below 'C' and a 'Bn average, they may be elected to probationary membership when sophomores and to working membership in their junior or senior year. Those students who maintain their standing through their senior year, or who meet requirements for membership during the last semester of that year are elected to honorary member- ship at the close of the year. This carries with it life membership without the privileges of voting or holding office but with the privilege of wearing the National Society pin.
