Along with the general responsibilities I of college graduates, you have the added privilege of setting the pace for future classes. l You can hardly spend two years in college without encountering real problems of a I sort that a person must encounter throughout his life. They may be personal or s0ciaL I economical or political, religious or ethical. Insofar as you have learned to come to grips I effectively with these problems, the chances are you will continue to do so in later life. Il This is important to you and your families for as you demonstrate your capacities and l your willingness to work out solutions to personal and community problems, you will be l asked to assume larger responsibilities. What you do with these responsibilities and l opportunities as educated persons will go far toward determining the kind of world in I which you and your Children are going to live. I am not proud of the world which my generation is handing on to yours. If it has improved during the past forty years, we may have to wait for the historians to point ou! the areas of improvement. On the other hand I am hopeful that you will face con- Hdently the tough assignment as you leave college. If Auburn Community College has I helped to make you aware of your heritage and its signiHcance, you are not unprepared for the problems to be solved. If through your efforts your generation is to realize the I good life in a truly free society and if you are not unprepared for that job, you have l already made a good beginning at Auburn Comnqunity College in the difficult but I exciting job of living. HISTORY Our college seal which gives 1953 as the starting year for Auburn Community College may give many of us the idea that everything concerned with college work started in that year. Research found this idea to be entirely without truth. ' Higher education started in Auburn in 1932 when the Auburn Collegiate center was established. This two-year college was sponsored by the School of Forestry at Syracuse University and was housed in the Auburn Theological Seminary Buildings. The funds for the operation were supplied by the Federal Government. The school operated on a half year basis and offered liberal arts subjects The year 1956-37 saw the Collegiate Center's largest enrollment, 275 pupils. Then in 1937, Federal funds were withdrawn. The summer of that year saw the end of Auburn's Collegiate Center. In 1951 our New York State legislature passed the State University Law which was a plan for starting colleges throughout the state where there was the most need. At a public hearing in Albany to which Dr. Hetherington, the Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Maurice Schwartz, then president of the Chamber of Commerce, were sent as Auburn's representatives, the State University adopted a master plan and named ten cities as sites for new centers for colleges. The trustees for ACC were appointed in 195 3, four by the Governor and five by the city of Auburn. In the fall of 1953 ACC became a reality with the entrance of the first freshman class.
