The plans, disap- pointments?-trLEratE:ns!Vand- eventual success of interested people working in the field of higher education all come into focus. 1955 marks the first graduating class of Auburn Community College. Though small in number, no class will represent exactly what this one doesg its spirit is symbolic. Although many graduating classes will pass through the doors of A. C. C., the members of the class of 1955 have the unique honor of being the first bona fide alumni. Within these pages are remembrances of happy times spent in extra-cur- ricular activitiesg groups in which We all functioned no matter in how small a capacity. In years to come may these pages recall the early college years We have spent together in the State University's newest educational venture. A474 l lT.T Pr N .... u.. K PRESIDENT I I As part of the State University of New Yorle the Auburn Community College will I contribute its Hrst class of graduates in june. Along with the general responsibilities I of college graduates, you have the added privilege of setting the pace for future classes. l You can hardly spend two years in college without encountering real problems of a I sort that a person must encounter throughout his life. They may be personal or s0ciaL I economical or political, religious or ethical. Insofar as you have learned to come to grips I effectively with these problems, the chances are you will continue to do so in later life. Il This is important to you and your families for as you demonstrate your capacities and l your willingness to work out solutions to personal and community problems, you will be l asked to assume larger responsibilities. What you do with these responsibilities and l opportunities as educated persons will go far toward determining the kind of world in I which you and your Children are going to live. I am not proud of the world which my generation is handing on to yours. If it has improved during the past forty years, we may have to wait for the historians to point ou! the areas of improvement. On the other hand I am hopeful that you will face con- Hdently the tough assignment as you leave college. If Auburn Community College has I helped to make you aware of your heritage and its signiHcance, you are not unprepared for the problems to be solved. If through your efforts your generation is to realize the I good life in a truly free society and if you are not unprepared for that job, you have l already made a good beginning at Auburn Comnqunity College in the difficult but I exciting job of living. In the mastery of this art I wish you endless success. I CHARLES G. HETI-IE INGTON I ' 4 0 A First row: Mrs. C. Brister, Dr. I.. jarvey, E. Boyle, Dr. A. I.oCastro. Standing: Dr. E. Vfood, F. Ramsey, E. Flynn, F. Smith, J. Karpinski, M. Goldman. HISTORY Our college seal which gives 1953 as the starting year for Auburn Community College may give many of us the idea that everything concerned with college work started in that year. Research found this idea to be entirely without truth. ' Higher education started in Auburn in 1932 when the Auburn Collegiate center was established. This two-year college was sponsored by the School of Forestry at Syracuse University and was housed in the Auburn Theological Seminary Buildings. The funds for the operation were supplied by the Federal Government. The school operated on a half year basis and offered liberal arts subjects The year 1956-37 saw the Collegiate Center's largest enrollment, 275 pupils. Then in 1937, Federal funds were withdrawn. The summer of that year saw the end of Auburn's Collegiate Center. In 1951 our New York State legislature passed the State University Law which was a plan for starting colleges throughout the state where there was the most need. At a public hearing in Albany to which Dr. Hetherington, the Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Maurice Schwartz, then president of the Chamber of Commerce, were sent as Auburn's representatives, the State University adopted a master plan and named ten cities as sites for new centers for colleges. The trustees for ACC were appointed in 195 3, four by the Governor and five by the city of Auburn. In the fall of 1953 ACC became a reality with the entrance of the first freshman class. an-mf mum i iw? For the past year and a half, the chorus has performed for various groups both in Auburn and many surrounding communities. Membership in the chorus is extended to all those interested in music. The chorus members have exhibited enthusiasm and cooperation and have truly carried a song in their heart and a smile on their lips. THE COLLEGE CHORUS 'Q' ,fu x Q First row: F. Dalesio, D. The Engineering Society was formed during the spring semester of 1954 with the purpose of fostering interest in Engineering and industrial processes, and to 'better acquaint prospective engineers with the field of their choice. In order to accomplish these objectives, visits to local industries were planned, together with talks by local engineers, and films on appropriate topics. Since there is normally a complete turn-over of students of A. C. C. every two years, it was decided to plan a sequence of industrial visits and films to cover a two year period. During the spring semester two visits were made, one at the Columbian Rope Company and another at the American Locomotive Company. During the fall of 1954 the group visited the Auburn Spark Plug Manufacturing Company and the Auburn Button Works. The officers of the Engineering Society include Ben Castro, Presidentg LaVerne Wallace, Vice President and Bob Mayer, Secretary. Mr. Warren Taylor acts as faculty advisor. Since its organiza- tion, the Harlequin Club has attempted to provide students with experience in acting, directing, stage managing, costuming, and make-up. Two months after its organization, the Harlequin Club presented a rollicking comedy, EVER SINCE EVE, as its initial offering. An enthusiastic audience encouraged the cast and the crew to plan an even more ambitious program for the following school year. Three one-act plays were presented by the Harlequin Club in February as a part of its 1954-1955 program. Again the plays were well received by a responsive audience, and several .requests were made for repeat performances. As a result of the requests, one ot the casts went on the road for three additional performances. The club has been capably led by its officers, James Thomas, Lita Zambito, Helen Homick, and Barbara Kellogg, who have had the responsibility of producing the plays. Faculty advisors, Mr. John J. Syrjala and Mr. Norman F. Bourke, have served as directors. HARLEQUIN DRAMATIC SOCIETY Sl 4- - l sul-,if 12.2 0-cu 1' Q-H fi? de! XX First row: Mr. Bourke, J. Siracusa, A. Nicholas, R. Smith, L. Bourke was named faculty advisor for the club. The officers chosen to lead the club for the remainder of the academic year were: Maureen Fogarty, President, Louis Caruana, Vice President, Susan Powers, Secretary, and john Bellomo, Treasurer. The main event of the Spring semester was a Communion Breakfast held at Springside Inn after the members had attended Mass at the Mercy Hospital Chapel. After the opening of school in the Fall, the club again began to function. New officers were elected, a constitution drawn up, affiliation with the National Federation of New- man Clubs was established and programs for the coming meetings of the Newman Clubs of New York State held at Oswego State Teachers College in November and each gave reports of the convention doings at the next regular meeting. The club also was one of the co-sponsors of the Winter Weekend dance held in February. A set of the Catholic Encyclope ia and a Bible were presented to the college library by the club. As a preparation for the Lenten season, a day of Recollection and Communion Break- fast was held on March 12 and 13. Rev. Hickey, O. C., was the Retreat Master and conducted a series of conferences at the Carmelite Monastery. Breakfast and lunch on March 12 were served at the Knights of Columbus home for all those attending the retreat. The next day the club members attended Mass and then went to Hotel Osborne for breakfast. Mr. George B. The Protocol Club was founded on March 25, 1954, and it was at this first meeting that the following objectives of this organization were established: 1. The promotion of Christian fellowship. 2. A better and more thorough understanding of the Bible, and 5. positive thinking. Because the club was formed primarily as a Protestant group within Auburn Community College, it derived its name from the combination of the abbreviated forms of Protestant QProtoj and college Ccollj. The organization of the Protocol Club is in itself unique. First, it has a rotating chairmanship which means that each week one member of the group is selected to be chairman for the following meeting. His main duty as chairman is the preparation of the week's program. With this arrangement, everyone has an opportunity to conduct a meeting. The club carries on numerous activities during the school year. Twice a month it has meetings which consist of group discussions of relevant Christian topicsg once a month it has a special program at which there may be a guest speaker or a showing of some Christian movie, and during the remaining week of the month it carries on a Bible study class led by a local clergyman. Besides these regular meetings, the Protocol Club sponsors other activities such as dinners and picnics, and frequently has united meetings with Christian organizations from neighboring colleges. PROTOCOL CLUB 'fu Lia- 4 v The youngest of Auburn Community Col1ege's extracurricular activities is the newly formed Science Club, composed of students interested in learning and sharing the wonders of science.
