CUSHING To you, Mr. Cushing, who served so faithfully and so well as our class advisor for three years, we dedicate this, the 1964 yearbook. This is our salute--our humble thank you--for the many hours of your time and energy you gave us so unselfishly. 2 OFFICE SECRETARY: Mrs. V. Morrison Mr. John Sunderland, Superintendent ADMINISTRA T10 When you think of a school, what sort of things come to mind? Such things, most likely, as games, dances, books, teachers, and others that you recall with a certain amount of nostalgia. One of the last things is the administration and the Board of Education. This is unfortunate as they are the hub of the whole system. Without their tireless efforts, none of the other things are possible. These dedicated men work diligently to procure and distribute the finances. They secure capable faculty members to insure the best education for the community's young people. They faithfully promote, at all times, the best interests of the school and the community. They realize that good education means a better community, and they strive toward that ideal. Theirs is a thankless job--and it shouldn't be. So we, thereby, offer our most hearty thanks for a job well done. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council, the organization in which all classes and school organizations are represented, had an active year. The council sponsored Homecoming this year and made a study of ideas for next year's Homecoming. From this study the council made recommenda- tions. One such recommendation is that we have floats next year. The student body indicated that they were in favor of having floats in a poll taken by the senior class. The council also acted on improving school spirit and made suggestions for improving our school's hot lunch program. BAND The Band activities for the year included two concerts, a winter concert and a spring concert. This year our marching band played at half-time at home football games and also made maneuvers on the field for the first time. The pep band, a small group made up from the im ortant sections of the band, played at all home basketball games. The band participated in the UND Homecoming festivities and was invited to the WDAY Band Festival in Fargo. These trips reward the members for their work in band as they have a pretty good time p shopping and ngoofing off.' The band made good showings at both music contests, getting number one ratings in all entries at Neche, and getting a number two rating against tough competition in the district music contest in Grand Forks e The band ends it's year's work by playing uptown on Saturday nights this summer. Although the recorddoes not show a too successful season, four out of the six losses were by margins of less than two points. The leading scorer of the year was Parker Williams with a total of 54 points. Williams, a halfback, was also voted most valuable hack. Bob Greenwood was next in line with 48, John Elgert, fullback with 42, and Lynn Hartje, quarterback, with 32. Probably, the best team effort put out bythe squad was against Grafton which was the last game of the season. The Tornadoes out-gained the Spoilers in yardage and also in first downs compiling a total of 250 to the Spoiler's 130, and 14 first downs to 11 for the Spoilers. The team, in total yardage gained and total points scored, was ahead of all opponents. The team finished with 182 points to 115 scored by the opponents. L. Hartje, T. Seymour, A. Crowstan, K. Many months of hard work and planning have gone into the preparation of this book. We hope that you will find some- thing in it that you will enjoy. The success of this book rests on the shoulders of the staff who have sacrificed much of their time and energy to work on this book. Many thanks go to our advisor, Hr. Robert Cushman, who put in many hours of work and straightened out many of our difficulties and problems. Working closely with us were our Junior editors who are anxiously awaiting to get started on their work for next year. Our business managers Darlyn Brandt and Jim Benjaminson deserve special thanks for their diligent work. Lynn Hlrtje and Jill Bernhoft deserve much credit for all the pictures that they contributed to this annual. We hope you will read and enjoy this annual for it was made for your pleasure. Through it you will be able to recall your pleasant memories at Cavalier High. Memories that you and I will not only remember but also treasure.
