ADMINISTRATICD Laying the policies for the faculty and administration to follow are among the school board's regular duties. Financing the half-million dollar school addition was the principle concern of this year's board. The members also worked in cooperation with the city council to lay plans for the new recreation area which will contain a football field, a track, and softball and baseball diamonds. Kihne, Mr. Aafedt tAdvisorj C CLUB The 'C' Club is the lettermen's organization of Cavalier High and its purpose is to promote good sportsmanship through good athletes. Its project this year was to raise money to purchase new football jerseys. The fundraising Sports Jamboree it sponsored included numerous basketball games and tram- poline exhibitions. Members also sold concessions at home basketball games. A senior trip was initiated this year as a membership incentive. Those eligible to participate are all senior boys who have earned at least two letters. This year eight boys went to Minot March 14-16 for the state Class 'B' tournaments and from their comments had a very good time! Also in this year's calendar was the annual father and son Award's Banquet sponsored by the Civic Club. The girls work energetically to earn points and thereby earn a pin or a letter. To earn points they participate in the most popular seasonal sports which this year included a basketball tournament with neighboring towns and the benefit sports jamboree. This year they sold cookbooks to earn money and in February sponsored a Valentine's Ball. Interesting speakers highlight the special meetings and the girls were shown the basic steps on hair-styling, knitting, and also learned the native customs of Ireland. ST UDE T COUNCIL The Student Council is an organization which represents the entire student body. Besides sponsoring the Homecoming dance, the Council also revised its constitu- tion in order to become more active in school affairs. Fred Olafson tossed the javelin 155 feet M inches to take first place in that division and qualify for the state meet. Mike Kihne also qualified by placing second in the 880-yard dash. ln the Sioux Outdoor relays at Grand Forks, Cavalier shared tenth position with Pembina in a meet in which 33 schools were entered. This was the second year for organized golf at CHS. lf interest and participation continue to increase, golf will become a letter sport. A triangular tournament at Larimore opened the season. John Berg, the team's only senior, scored a 71 in the meet and placed second in individual scoring while the team as a whole placed third. Other meets were held at Cavalier, Park River, and Grand Forks. Berg was low scorer in all the meets. The left-handed dribbler and backcourt ace had three or four outstanding games. Stay on him, John says Coach Clark. ll Y :Eat that tiplllt BOYD BERG, who played his first year on the varsity squad, held a guard position on the team. He is a good shot and started a few games. LYNN HARTJE was the starting center all season The leading rebounder on the team, his best all around game was against Grafton. Boyd shoots.. . Make that basket!! WE WON! ! l l RICK MILLER, a freshman played both A and B ball. He has a promising future as a guard and as a scorer with his driving lay- ups and his variety of long shots. U WOWEEE! l ! ! LARRY HARTJE is an excellent backcourt man. A freshman, he played guard position and showed his scoring potential. LARRY HANNESSON, a 6'5 freshman, has a bright future in CHS basketball. This tremendous prospect played on both A and B squads this year. 4 'I' TIM HERZOG started quite a few games this season. His height makes him a valuable rebounder and good on tip-ins. Tim played an outstanding game against Stephen. The 'B' team passes down the floor at Stephen. EUGENE BOETTGER, the reserve center this year, saved a few games for the Tornadoes this season. Shambaugh, I TRAMLIRAL BASKETBALL Activity for all boys of CHS who did not take part in varsity sports during the winter months was provided by intramural basketball. This was the first time it was offered by the athletic department. Mike Kihne's Komets won most games during the season and also won the playoffs. SENIOR PLAY The senior class presented the play, Here Comes Charlie November 15 and 16 under the direction of Mr. Carlson. The setting for the play is St. Louis, Missouri. When Larry Elliott adopts Charlie Hopps, he has no idea of all the trouble he is asking for. His fiancee, Vivian Smythe-Kersey and her mother and brother, as well as his own aunt, Mrs. Farnham, turn against him. Charlie turns out to be a hillbilly and she brings her Uncle Aleck, her late father's partner, with her when she comes to live with Papa Larry . The two win their way into the hearts of everyone by the end of the three-act comedy. What y'all lookin' at me fer? The band received a number one rating at the County Music Festival and a number two rating at the District Ill Music Contest. Qualifying for the State Music Festival by receiving a number one rating at the District were Kathy Hillis, saxophone solo, Fred Olafson, sousaphone solo, Candis Hartje, baton twirling, Judie Schroeder, DeeAnn Eberhart and Helen Eastman, clarinet trio, Ward Lewis, Herbie Thomson, and Joanne Steinke, trumpet trio, and Cary Steinke, Susan Restemayer, and Jerry Schroeder, trombone trio. Other solos and ensembles were the saxophone trio, David Kemp, Gerialdine Thomson, clarinet solo, Judie Schroeder, and trumpet solo. Bob Thorlakson. This is a story which takes place in Quadlander Crabbe's home in a midwestern city. How to sidestep an unwelcome marriage planned tor the twins by their autocratic father is a headache for them. How the family finally straightened out their tangled affairs led to a riotous comedy. The exciting night of May 4 began with a banquet at 6:00 p.m. A turkey dinner was prepared by the mothers of the members of the junior class. The entertainment was a vocal solo by Darlyn Brandt, a piano solo by Margie Gunter and a clarinet solo by Judie Schroeder. David Kemp, President of the junior class, served as Master of Ceremonies for the banquet. JU IDR ' SENIOR AN PROM Freshman honor students served punch. Many apple trees in blossom, butterflys, and a spring mural portrayed the theme of the Prom, l'Apple Blossom Time . Pink, gold, and mint green streamers completed the decorations. The twelve piece Mayville Dance Band provided the music forthe guests. The Prom was the climax of many weeks of anticipation and planning by the members of the junior class-- especially by Gary Steinke, Prom chairman. They visited the Parliament Building, the Cathedral at Saint Bonniface, and the Assiniboine Park Zoo. Many of the seniors spent their free time in the afternoon shopping visiting museums and art galleries, and sight- seeing. At 6:30 p.m. they attended a banquet at the Turf Room of the Paddock. After that they were on their own until midnight when they headed home loaded with souvenirs and memories of a fun-filled day. FIELD DAY X f X The annual Field Day was held on Thursday morning, May 23. There were ten events in which each class could participate. These were volley- ball, softball, 3-legged race, 100 yard dash, 60 yard dash, shuttle relay, rope climb, and the tug-of-war. The juniors were victorious with a score of 36. The freshmen captured second place with 35 points. The sophomores placed third with 30 points and the seniors had 29 points. He spoke on the topic, Living up l to Our Calling, to the 47 members of the graduating class of 1963. l Also on the Baccalaureate program were two numbers by the high school mixed chorus. Rev. With the opening strains of Pump and Circumstance, the Class of 1963 in caps and gowns of royal blue began the processional to the platform to receive their diplomas. Dr. Ronald Jackson, Dean of Students at the University of North Dakota, gave the commencement address entitled Looking into the World of the r Graduate.
