GIRLS ATHLETICS For the flrst tlme ln many years Cattaraugus dld not have a gxrls varslty basketball team To provlde some sport for the gurls an In terclass League was formed Members of the League were Sen1ors Post Graduates Elghth Grade Sophomores Jumors and Freshmen The Semor team composed of Jeanette Young Evelyn Stemhauser Frances Babcock Ahce Straub Helen Schultz Arletta Balley and Ina Sahsbury was the undefeated team wmnmg the banner as Interclass Champlon Thls team had about four members of the old Varslty team naturallv that helped the strength of the team With Francess speed and Jeanette s helght It dxdn t take long for the ball to get to Ahce Straub and It dldn t take her long to make a basket The Junlors and Sophomore glrls had to combine to make a team Gracxa Austln Jeanne Wake and Shlrley Stemhauser were the Chltf players of thlS team although all the g rls played the1r best The Freshman team was the most mterestxng None of the glrls on thls team had ever had much chance to play basketball so It was a pleasure to see them lmprove durmg each game The glrls could usually depend on Wlnnle Gemmlll to make a basket whlle Mary Raecher and Eleanor Walte helped her along The Post Grad Elghth Grade team took second place m the Lea gue Bessle Russell and Helen Butterfleld post grad glrls were mem bers of the old varslty team so they added strength at forward posl tlon Prom the eighth grade Maxine Swetland and Jeanette Pollto showed some good plavmg and much mterest On a whole the Inter Class League was a blg success creatln more mterest between classes and allowing more glrls to learn how to play basketball Another mterestmg thmg the glrls dld thls year was to xnvlte other gurls from dlfferent schools to Cattaraugus for a play day One Saturday we lnvlted about twenty glrls from Randolph and twentv from Gowanda They arrlved about ten thlrty and then the fun b gan Each group of gurls were dlvlded mto fue dlfferent teams and these teams played basketball dodge ball servlce ball and other games untll about noon Then lunch was served ln the Homemaklng Rooms xt was a good chance to get acquamted After lunch each the radlo and danced About flve thlrty they left for home The next Saturday we mvxted Ilttle Valley and Elllcottvllle Cattaraugus w s the flrst school to mstxtute Play Day ln thls County We hope they can be contmued because they w1ll gradual ly become more mterestmg and such a day IS a splendld way to ac quhalnt the glrls Wlth glrls from other schools and mterest them m other sc oo s TRACK On May 21 Cattaraugus Hugh School entered three boys m the County Track Meet at Olean Francls Ryan ran the 100 yard dash Francls Russell the 200 y xrd dash and Bernard Keatlng the half m1le run Ryan won hls event and became the county champlon The other entrants dad surprlsmgly well consldermg the amount of prepar atlon they had for the meet Ryan desplte hxs luck of trammg thls season defeated the best our county has to offer He got off to a slow start but his natural abllxty was evldenced at the flfty yard l ne where he caught hls strlde and forged rapldly to the front to hold hls lead to the f1n1sh At the sectlonal meet held ln Dunklrk Rvan runmng agalnst the champ ons of flve countlcs came 1n fourth out of elght starters Some mterest vs as shown ln track thls year and It IS posslble that we may enter a larger team next xear that wxll carry off more DFIZES ' 922 Q o Q 4 no .eq .n.u.o .2 3. g..
