BOATS ON THE HISTORIC HUDSON C' Throughout the years, much history has been created on the Hudson River, Henry Hudson's Half Ivloonu and Robert Fulton's Clermont are both synonymous with the historic river. To us, who live on its banks, the short, fat tugboats, the long, flat barges, and the tall, graceful sloops are all familiar sights. Yet, since our childhood, the biggest, and the best vessels on the river ,ts have been those of the Hudson River Day Line. Those gleam' ing, white excursion boats held all the excitement of the Queen Mary for us. Last year the Day Boats made their last trips on the Hudson 1- this year, we Seniors have made our last voyage at Catskill High School. . forever. The memory of the -ships on our beautil udson may become a diminishing impression in our minds. For that reason, V the editors have ehosen Boats on the Historic Hudson as a motif , for the 1954 edition of the Rip Van Winkle .,.. So .... There is no wisdom without franknessf' The class of 1954 dedicates this yearbook to Miss Lorraine Roberts, who took us under .her wing when we were Seniors and has helped and guided us not only through high school but also toward our future careers. Although busy as the High School band director, she gave her time and energy unceasingly to make our final year all that we desired. Her keen judgment has aided us to solve the problems of schooland class work and those concerrif ing each of us individually. She has those qualities of leadership that we admire and respect. Roberts, teacher, friend, and counselor, is one w.hom we shall remember with warmest apprecia- tion when we look through our Book of Memories. Bob, there were times in our four years of high school when life seemed very difficult for us. But as we look back, any obstacles we encouwregkseem trivial as we think of you and your attainments. Your courage and perseverance have made you keep abreast of us, and finally in this last year, we are graduating together. Vkfe are proud, Bob, to dedicate our Senior Section to you, with the hope that in the future, as in the past, your faith will carry you forward, through college and through life, and that you will remember your' friends in the Class of '54 as we shall remember you. Our four class officers, under the capable leadership of President Ronald Vincent, have worked closely with the class as a whole, to make our Senior year most productive. They conducted our meetings and kept our records and ac' counts in good order, and thus have ful' filled their responsibilities to the class and to the school. The Senior Social Committee, com' prised of the class officers, homeroom chairmen and homeroom representatives is a new organization. Many times at noon under the chairmanship of Martin Singer, they met with Miss Roberts to form plans for the various money raising projects for the class. Among the activities were several dances held 'iroughout the year and a very successful food sale in December. As reward for their hard work these students have the satisfaction of knowing that their efforts culminated in a job well done. 15 94 ,- . - . ,' 0 .: , ,ir . r -av ,, , , g, ASCANIO, VIRGINIA - Chorus 3: Banking Captain 2, Commerce Club 43 ABEL, FRED C.-Intramurals: Soft' Junior Prom Committeeg Yearbook ball 4,3,2,1: Basketball 3. 53165. .. rx- 4 ',,.,,. , W . When seventeen year old Angie Morrow meets Jack Duluth, she feels that she is grown up. Her understanding parents try to accept the fact, although ten year old Kitty wails, Angie never has time for me anymore. To complete Angie's family there's Margaret, whose life is all settled with stable, steady Art, and sophisticated Elaine, whose eagerness for dates with Martin, an unpleasant fellow, causes the family great concern. Rifts in Angie's first romance are caused by complications involving jealous Margie, Jane, Tony and Fitz. As Angie leaves for college, she philosophizes, Growing up is not something definite. You can't know when you've crossed the line, but when it's gone you know that never again can any' thing be quite so wonderful as that 'Seventeenth Summer'. hz.. fc UI ff, THREE COUPLES: Here Tony, jane, Margaret, Art, Angie and Jack are about to leave for the Counf try Club Dance, Everything looks calm now, but before long Angie and Jack have a quarrel, resulting in Jack taking jane, and Angie being Tony's date. Yet despite our stern determination we found time for enjoyable excursions to the Game Farm, Albany, and Cooperstowng and for pre' is nior Detective plays. Q.,Time flew- all too quickly. Soon our Fiieshman and Sophomore days were over leaving us with pleasant memories of our unusual dances: The Ski Lodge, April Showers, Harvest Moon, and the Snow Ball. Nor shall we easily forget nur helpful Advisers, Miss McClure, and Mr. Lang, who launched our successful high sdhool career. That following summer seemed long but at last we returned to begin our Junior year. We were extremely fortunate in having Miss Rochford as class adviser. Since 1953 was the Coronation year in England, we adopted that colorful event as the theme of our Junior Prom. In an atmosphere of a medieval castle ball-room, resplendent with glistening chandeliergflazjv 4. authentic coats'of'arms, Ronald if ,. G K Zenith ofl our .high school days. Never before have we been so interested in the affairs of the school. An dnusual concern has been shown in phi' ' Q., our school government, and'aQ 'A .attempt is being made to impi-on, A in . esent status. Ouriund raising'7aet'ivities have inf cluded a fbod sale, a dance, selling ice cream, and we have conducted the best magazine drive in the history of the school, thanks to the wonderful assistance of Miss Roberts. We have also presented Seventeenth Summer, a delightful yet trueftoflife comedy, ideally adapted to the members of our class. Their performance scored an outstanding success. The tribulations of a typical teen-ager, her relationship to her family and friends, struck a sym' pathetic chord of memory in the hearts of an enthuisastic audience. We shall never forget Mrs. Cunningham's patience in directing us. Throughout the year we devoted our' selves to the objective which has been our goal for four years of money raising endeavor: our edition of the Rip Van Winkle. We should like to express our appreciation to our .hardfworking editor' infchief, Martin Singer, and to indefatig' able Jean Shults, as well as to all the others who helped in this project. When we think of the yearbook, the name of the one person who contributed whole' heartedly to this undertaking fills our minds. Our sincere gratitude goes to you, Mrs. Rusack, for your expert counsel which gave us a yearbook of which we can be proud. And to Mrs. Mower and her typing staff who assisted with the pgloduction of the Rip Van Winkle, we to give special thanks..gZf3f-fif- 'pk-jFfAlthough we may be , to all Q vr I and Barbara Anable were Crowne -mg' and Queen. RIP VAN WINKLE STAFF In November of 1953, and for many months afterwards, we members of the Class of '54 were found busily working on our memory book, The Rip Van Winkle. In it is a story of our four years in Catskill High School. We have tried to show, by pictorial review, how its activf ities and traditions have contributed to many lasting memories, and the influence that these have had in training us to appreciate the necessary qualities that will help us take our places in society. People make up a band and all groups of people have a history. Our band has a history. In 1934, when Dr. DiCaprio Hrst directed it, our hand had only twenty members--without uniforms. Two decades of ahle leadership developed the band in quality, size and appearance. Under Director Bremer our hand became a member of the N.Y.S.S.M.A. Miss Ivy May johnson introduced individual hand instruction. Course credits have heen given hand membership for a decade. The Booster Club, organized hy community music enthusiasts, sponsored numerous fundfraising activities to provide us with hand uniforms. Under the dynamic and enthusiastic leadership of Miss Roberts the C. H. S. band has set an enviable record, In 1953 it received an A rating in state competition. Present day responsibilities of the hand include playing for athletic activities, social and civic functions, parades, and school assemblies. There are nine seniors in the present band. Several of them have been studying music under the direction of Miss Roberts since they were students in the fourth grade of our elementary schools. Catskill High, therefore, need not be discouraged by the disappointing record made by its soccer squad in 1953, as all but three players will return next season. Goalie Hugh Schrader, Fullback John VanDeusen, and Inside Fred Chetti are the only Seniors on the team. Although they will be missed next year, Coach Waldron will still have a sound group of veterans capable of restoring Catskill High School to winning ways. Baseball The 1953 baseball squad was one of the most outstanding Catskill High School has ever had. Compiling a record of eight victories as against only two setbacks, C. H. S. defeated such schools as Cairo, Greenville, Hunter-Tannersville, Middle' burg, Schoharie, and Windhzim during the season. Saugerties was the only team capable of downing Catskill. It turned the trick twice, by scores of 3 to 1 and 6 to 3. John Van Deusen, the team's leading pitcher, Bob Snyder, the top batsman, and Fred Chetti, 1953's foremost fielder, will all be on hand this season to try to duplicate the Hne record of the preceding year.
