However, this is not a new position to Mr. Hilbert. He has been an administrator for many years. This year the CHS environ- ment is being upgraded. The auditorium has been paneled and will receive a new lighting system from the county. Floors and ceilings have also been replaced. Thanks to the continu- ing efforts of the Administration, the school environment is chang- ing for the better. Diana Mand, chairman of the Art Department, entered talented students in different shows and displays around the community. These students have made a name for themselves as well as_ the department. This year the music department, under the direction of Phil Taylor, participated in many activities. The most memorable was the music ex- change with the Fox Lane High School. The music department formed a new organization, the Music Boosters, to help with such ac- tivities as the exchange trip. KEITH LAUER Md. Inst. The department got two more microcomputers and hope to have a whole room of them by the beginning of the 1987 school year. Twenty new _ students joined the Future Business Leaders of America, a club of dedicated business students who want to further themselves in the business field. The club com- petes in the categories of short- hand, computers, and typing. They receive a monthly magazine about all of the outstanding Business Leaders of America. The department is becoming more modern by doing away with their manual typewriters and go- ing completely electronic. More students passed the State tests, and verbal scores on the SAT continued to rise steadily. Joining the department were Carol Reed from Hagerstown, Chana Bass from Woodlawn, and David Rollison who replaced Mrs. Segala in December. Midway through the year, Mrs. Reeves accepted a position with the State Department of Education. Nancy Fisher then joined the staff to complete the year-long turnovers in the English department. The ‘Operation Wellness Program” is one exam- ple. Through this, teachers were able to receive blood pressure tests, promoting health and help- ing those with high blood pressure. She was also coor- dinator of the Teachers’ Blood Drive for the entire Southwest area. The drive was a huge suc- cess and provided the Red Cross with much needed blood. The Library staff continued in their usual manner of excellence, helping students with multitudes of reports and projects. They recently obtained the software to a program which will help students in preparing for the SAT’s. Futhermore, they are awaiting the arrival of a Direct line dial access modem for their computer. The department greatly benefited from the addition of Reggie Brooks to the staff. An ad- dition to the curriculum was gymnastics, which hasn’t been offered since 1980. The Leader- ship Training program expanded, especially in the men’s depart- ment. With these new additions, the Physical Education depart- ment had a very successful year. EDWARD L. In addition to their previous programs, the department placed even more stress on their reading program. Students were given extra vocabulary in the chapters they studied and were assigned pro- jects for which library use was required. As a result, reading skills were enhanced, and a deeper understanding of the sub- ject was achieved. ALICE STRAN Lab Aide RICHARD W. The curriculum contained the same content studied in more advanced classes, but was modified to meet the needs of individual students. SAT Prep and the Reading Lab were two other courses where comprehension, verbal, and study skills were stressed throughout the year. The Career Orientation Program was an alternative to a six hour school day where students managed school and a job. Underclassmen worked at actual job sites where they individually dealt with their employers on a first-hand basis. The Diversified Occupation Department continued to maintain the students’ contact with their families and business employers within the community. Although we don’t always give them credit, school could not be run without them. So we take this opportunity to say thanks for a job well done. 7 _ S % A ; Cafeteria Staff n s Western Vocational Technical High School was beneficial to students seeking another aspect of high school education. Students attended classes at Catonsville for half of a day and at Western for the other half in morning or afternoon sessions. At Western, students spent a period of time in classroom theory, then progressed to designated work areas for on-hands experience in a range of career-oriented courses. - EWESTERN: committed to excellence covootte Seniors Seniors 5 Seniors Despite having the smallest graduating class in Catonsville’s history, this year’s senior class made their fundraiser the most profitable ever. They had $8000.00 to help finance the senior activities such as the senior slide show, senior parent picnic, and most importantly, the prom, which was held at the Belvedere Hotel on May 29th. As a result of the fundraiser success, the prom tickets were the lowest price ever. In addition, the active class participation allowed almost 75 seniors to attend the prom for free. The class of 238 graduated at U.M.B.C. on June 5th. Ricken ee ; 46 tac Officers: B. Dingle (sec.), N. Green (V. Pres.), M. Hourihan (Pres.), L. Holland (Treas.) Executive Board: P. LeVasseur, J. This year’s Victory Mixer was in celebration of the Fall sports season. Davis DJ’s motivated the Comet fans for an exciting year. Students as well as team players tripped the light fantastic to the latest top 40 hits. It was an energized evening for all who attended. The Twelve Days of Christmas ’Twas the twelve days before Christmas When all through the gym The sound of the band Beginnings Could be heard from within As the couples arrived With good cheer in their eyes The ladies wore dresses And the men all wore ties The dance floor was cluttered As the couples were led With visions of the evening Dancing inside their heads When all of a sudden Out went the lights MERRY CHRISTMAS to all And to all a good night Sweetheart Dance Love was in the air as couples swayed to the romantic songs of DJ. Delights at the Sweetheart Dance on Friday, February 13, 1987. Three hundred eighty-four students attended the Senior class sponsored activity. A valen- tine time was had by all who lingered beneath the array of pink, white, and red colored hearts, streamers and helium balloons, an all time favorite. The king and queen of hearts, chosen at random, were the highlights of the evening. The Senior class hopes that everyone who at- tended will share sweet dreams and hold the special memories of the evening in their hearts for years to come. 148 For the first time, on April 9, 1987 Catonsville High recognized distinguished students with academic letters. Forty-two students consisting of seniors, junior, and sophomores were honored for making the Distinguished Honor Roll. Criteria for these awards was ap- pearing on this Principal’s List for four consecutive quarters, or for accumulating a total of eight throughout their high school career. This type of academic recognition should provide in- centive as this tradition con- tinues at Catonsville. Classy Themes The SGA _ surprised many students this year when they broke tradition and did not hold the annual St. Patrick’s Day dance. Instead, the SGA decided to try something new; a class theme dance. Each class was to show its spirit by dressing in costume. The freshmen dressed from the 50’s era; the sophomores dressed in all black; the juniors dressed as transvestites; and the seniors wore togas. A prize was then awarded to the freshmen for having the most participation. ve Love’s Labours Lost Enthusiasm throbbed in the hearts of Catonsville’s per- formers on May 8 and 9 as they entertained two large audiences who attended the Shakespearean play, Love’s Labours Lost. The performance succeeded in por- traying Shakespeare’s critical view of society. Paul Dougherty, the producer director, was very pleased with the performers who all worked very hard to master this difficult play. He felt that it was a tremendous learning ex- perience and that it was more than putting on a show; it was putting on an art. He added that there was very good audience response on both nights of the performance. Mr. Dougherty also felt that performing this Shakespearean play allowed our drama department to explore new ideas. Finally, he stressed that it made a positive statement for our school. 154 a 5: aif ¥ ee oR 5 OF i an: Sen 28 sewer Af oe a r s - as ee Co he ae ee ee ene ME” ss SSS AG EE SF Bo eR teal! ins oe vip ee a en eS NR cl Bo nl ing it taatnie ory ak 4 tnd a eg lia ROS a i ll gs -— 22 ET 5A se ERIE ISNT Seer ea I Ss ST ein ORR ng Ae $ ge a 4 —_ i ce pe a BN me 5 . . ees a = Bisse MOS eee ET rT allo i am geet 158 d PPL eg BO ay, 4 E Fe = : tg PM at yy Preteens. “a. ee aes ny ‘ee Se a a 159 Clubs Bed ibrary and Guidance L Office, AIDES — Department Na- ’ ep) s ® = ® Oo = 3 ° = S x oo SI = ial g Leaders of America, ness School Store, Future Bus lety. ] Honor Soci Lona COP 9, COP 10 Chess Club Varsity Club Exec. Plagued by injuries early in the year, the Comets were held to a record of three wins and seven losses. Despite the disappointing scores, the Comets had more potential than their record showed. Due to the _ strong defense, the Comets were always in the game, and earned the respect of the opposing teams. The Junior Varsity team also had a tough season. Despite the 1-6 record, the team never quit, and gave 100% throughout the year. Although the Comets lacked game experience, they gained confidence by the end of the season, and showed great prospects for an excellent team in the near future. First Row: E. Webb, D. Tan, D. With a record of 6-6-1, they qualified for Regionals for the first time in the history of Catonsville soccer. The team traveled a rough road to get to the regionals with two overtime wins and one loss. It was, “The best season we’ve had in fifteen years of soccer in the school,” com- mented Coach Dave Lane. The players who qualified for All-County were Craig Berry first team, Marty Evans and Jeremy Stiffler, second team. Craig Berry also made The Maryland State All-Star team, the first player to do. so. in the sshistoryesot Catonsville. The J.V. team suffered through a 1-8-1 record because of their move to Division I. They had a “Very good defensive team. We just couldn’t get the ball in the goal,” pointed out Coach Dennis Quinby. In only the second year of play, the team fought their way to a 4-3 overall record, sparked by the positive attitude and coopera- tion of the team. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the night game played October 15 at Lansdowne. Th is marked the first girls’ varsity soccer game ever played at night in Baltimore County’s history. The Junior varsity finished ’86 with a 2-5-1 record. Despite the record, Coach Kathy Schuyler thought the girls played an ex- cellent season. Recapturing Tradition For the sixth time in the past eight years, the Comets captured the State Championship Title at C.C.C., under the coaching of Debbie Clem. The Comets also won the championships for their Division, County, and Region. Jennifer Hoffer represented Catonsville on the First Team All-Metro and was named Player of the Year, while Laura Chren- cik was on the Second Team All- Metro. Coach Clem credits the team’s unbeaten record and the successful season to the closeness of the team and the way they played together all season long. The Junior Varsity Team, under the coaching of Alan Ar- nold, also ended their season on a successful record and making it to the finals in the County Cham- pionships. The team had seven very close games which they lost by only one run, but the Comets hung in throughout the season. Next year there will be six returning players and they look forward to an even better season. The JV Baseball team did better than Varsity again this year, ending their season with a 13-5 record. Overall, the team scored twice as many runs as they gave up. It was their feeling that they did not play a team that had bet- ter talent.
