The two teamed up with veteran Mary Grauel to work on a curriculum that would en- sure that the needs of the students were met. The renovation was finally completed and the industrial arts wing opened last fall with its brand new look. Students attend Catonsville for half of a day and Western for the other half in morning or afternoon sessions. A day at Western starts out in a classroom with instruction and progresses to designated work areas for experience in such areas as food services, child care, mechanics, carpentry, electronics, data processing, and medical secretaries. 47 Special Thanks The faculty, as well as the student body, would like to give thanks to the Bus Drivers many people who worked behind the scenes here at Catonsville. The grounds were kept tidy by Rolly Rogers while John Bowen, Dawn Pro- sper, James Perry, and Catherine Steward kept the school facilities running smoothly. The bus drivers, once again, safely transported students to and from school throughout the year, while the cafeteria workers fed those students with nutritious meals. While the annual cheese and sausage fundraiser in the fall fell short of the class’ goals, the class of ’86 was able to make a comeback which allowed them to have a fantastic Senior Day. The Prom, on May 30, was an elegant evening spent at the Belvedre Hotel with Crash Davenport providing t he music. The Seniors continued the tradition of holding a Baccalaureate service on the evening of June 5. Finally, on June 6 the class of 1986 came together for one last time at U.M.B.C.’S_ Fieldhouse for a formal graduation ceremony. After receving their diploms that evening the Seniors proudly became Catonsville’s newest alumni. a, Officers: M. Flint (Pres.), M. Advisor: Rosie Jirsa Bentley (V. Pres.), J. Kloetzel (Sec.). The seniors had two ballrooms open to them. In one, a jazz pianist, tables, and food provided a quieter atmosphere with friends, and in the other, the rock band Crash Davenport had everyone feeling like a ““Somebody’”’, the prom’s theme. Freese a saceneianeeie ae bos | | 88 Made It The class of 1986 held the 82nd an- nual commencement exercises on Friday, June 6, 1986, at the U.M.B.C. Field- house. This year’s graduation was distinguished from previous years because of the class efforts to formalize and shorten the ceremony. The class donned rented royal blue gowns rather than the traditional blue for boys and yellow for girls. The orchestra performed selections from Fiddler on the Roof and the Senior choir sang ‘“The Greatest Love of All.’’ Speeches by Matt Flint, Jennifer Kloetzel, and Millie Bentley focused on the three aspects of education: students, teachers, and parents, thus ending one era of education for the class of 1986. £05 5606 % 365 eo; 6 x2 Hn io. 0) re th ee sa ¥eona? Van oO 106 An Evening Filled With Dreams “These Dreams,” by the musical group Heart, was the theme of the class of 1987’s Junior Prom. The prom was held on May 17, 1986, in the school’s gymnasium. Juniors passed through transformed hallways of pink and white balloon covered panels. Musical tradition was broken by the presence of a DJ rather than hiring a band. At the end of the evening, favors bearing the theme, “These Dreams,’ were distributed to each person as they left the prom an- ticipating dreams of a senior year. Sophomores The class of 1988, with the help of their advisor, Selvin Rudd, was able to sponsor an Hawaiian Luau. The dance, also sponsored by the freshman class, was held on April 11, 1986. The music was by D K Sound Productions. The money raised at the dance helped to support the Varsity Club Banquet at the end of the year. This was the first time that the new tarp was used to preserve the gym floor. With the tarp, dances other than the Junior Prom were again held in the gym. The Class of 1985 donated one thousand dollars from their cheese and sausage fundraiser, and the SGA donated one thousand dollars toward the purchase of the tarp. With this combined effort, the entire student body benefitted in return- ing the popular CHS dances to the gym. ee = ae ay Highlights of Homecoming This year, the Victory Mix- er Homecoming Dance began a new tradition at CHS. Sponsored by both the SGA and Varsity Club, the dance got spirits soaring for the Varsity Comets football game the following morning. Featured at the dance was the band Apricot Brandy. Between sets, the long awaited names of the Homecoming King, Jay Tan, and Homecoming Queen, Shelly Robbins, were announced. Also announced was the Royal Court, com- posed of two representatives from each grade level. 140 Settling the Score The fourth annual Varsity Club student-faculty volleyball game was held on November 22, 1985. The Varsity Club decided on a different schedule of games because of the good turn out of in- terested players. This year, a freshman- sophomore game was played before the junior-senior teams played the faculty. The night consisted of 11 exciting games. The sophomore girls defeated the freshman girls in 3 games, and the freshman boys defeated the sophomore boys, also in 3 games. The girls’ junior- senior team came out with a first ever win over the faculty women in 2 games. The men then defeated the junior-senior boys’ team in an exciting 3 game match, an un- precedented first for the men. 142 Under the Mistletoe The 1985 Christmas dance was held on Saturday, December 14 and was a tremendous success with over 150 couples in attendance. The band, Invoice, supplied the entertainment for the eve- ning with a variety of songs. Santa Claus and the seasonal decorations of mistletoe and snowflakes aroused the Christmas spirit in everyone. nes aeN Braugh The St. Patrick Day dance, held on March 21, 1986, marked an end to Spirit Week and supposedly the winter season. A few students braved the frigid temperatures outside to show off their beach clothes in the gym. The wide varie- ty of music played kept students on their toes and as flighty as leprechauns. The dance was sponsored by the SGA with music provided by Davis Dee Jays. 146 Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof, a musical about Jews forced to leave their home in Russia, was held the weekend of March 13, 14, and 15. Leading a well balanced and very talented cast were Richard Zahn as Tevye and Jennifer Kloetzel as Golde. Var- sity debate teams faced some partner changes, but continued to compete throughout the year. Jean Martin, Steve Canner, Latonya Dargan, Evan Duverlie, and Bill Stanley were all part of this persevering group. In Novice debate, teams of David York, Laura Hayes, Sarah Wagner, and Sharron Caine kept busy preparing for next year and perfecting the basics. Lincoln-Douglas debators, senior Millie Bentley and junior John Newbrough both qualified local BCFL finals and newcomer Jo Mauser for had quite a few successes. Senior speech competitors Rachel Burchard and Richard Zahn also qualified for finals, and coached Carrie Riley and Christy Black. The team looked forward to state and national competitions in spring, and in-school in the summer. Students in Ed Massey’s speech class this year developed skills which will prepare them for the world of public communication. Because of this lack of participation, the team had numerous forfeits giving the opponents at least a 20 point advantage at the start of every match. The team had _ three wrestlers go on to the county tour- naments: Manual Tan, Joe Hagner, and Andy Ryan, who strongly represented Catonsville and coach Deickman in his final season. Capozzi. ae Puttin’ on the Hits The 1986 baseball season was not the greatest in Comet history, but the Varsity team played hard until the very last game, showing Catonsville does have spirit. Plagued by injuries, the Comets ended their season with a 4-14 record, but look forward to a better season next year. The JV baseball team fared better than Varsity with a 9-8 record. According to John Leslie, the JV coach, they were ‘‘a good scrappy team who could play and win against anyone, but a team which was sometimes overmatched in hitting and pitching.”’ VARSITY COMETS . The Comets, having a dismal season with only one win, played on pride. The team was out- matched, but with grim determination, survived a rough season. On the other hand, the JV team had a 5-3 record and has a promising future as an upcoming Varsity team with a strong attack and midfield. Catonsville has a strong team to look forward to in the next few years with many returning experi- enced players. Pikesville EVT Franklin JV Boys Lacrosse: Front Row: A. Konezeski, S. Morseberger, M. Although it was a young team, they had strong skills and played well together. Highlighting the season was a tense 15-14 victory over Lansdowne, and a closely fought game against perennially strong Hereford. There were four players chosen for All- County Selections and four players selected to play on the All-Star team. The J.V. lacrosse team had a suc- cessful season with final record of 3-3. Coach Kathy Schuyler felt that the team learned to create open spaces and pass well. They were very well- balanced and unselfish, always looking for the open person. Varsity was coached by newcomer Sue Jameson, a valued addition and very much admired by all with whom she came into contact. The successful season allowed team leaders Jake Carrigan and Eric Miller a chance to continue their luck in individual tournaments held at the end of their regular season. The Comets hold high expectations for next year’s season and the many ex- perienced players that will be returning are not worried about fulfilling those hopes. Experience was the goal of the Varsity Tennis team this year. The young team set their minds to gaining experience, as well as strength needed for upcoming seasons. There was much effort put into the Comets’ season, and not without reward. Some members moved onto the Tennis and Golf county championships. Members of the team are also looking forward to meeting the expectations held for them next year. 200 S: H é iN ‘ x i Varsity Golf: K. Rau, S. King, L. Blomster, E. Miller, B. Kouroupis, J. Upman, M. The Girls’ Track team coached by Geoff Weilert, as well as the boy’s team made it to Regionals.
