1980-81 C-M Sports News FOOTBALL 1 The team ended the season posting a 6-3 record, their best overall won-lost record in the 11 man football history at C-M. The team was named as Sectional Honorable Mention. Individual Achievements - Tomjohnsong First All-County Team, Second All Upstate Team. Tim Murphy, First All-County Team. Lavell Pease, Second All-County Team. CROSS COUNTRY 1 Although no record was posted, the team fought a fierce battle against league champion OCS and former league champions Hannibal and Weedsport. Individual Achievements - Kaylie Russell qualified for the State Meet. FIELD H Y 1 The field hockey team of 1980 showed much improvement in skills and team work, despite their losing record of 2-9. The 1980 team was a very close-knit squad, led by the outstanding, all-around coaching of Robin Bartholemew. Many games were closer than the scores reflected. TBALL 1 Fighting their way to a 10-6 record, the Devils posted the best record in a number of years. Surprising a few teams, the team advanced to the quarter finals in the sectional playoffs and was named Sectional Honorable Mention. Individual Achievements - Mark Townsend, County All-Star Senior Team and Honorable Mention. Fred Humberstone, Second All Star Team. 1 Although the team was comprised of only 7 players, 5 of them Sophomores, the team posted a 5-7 record. They have an excellent prospect for a future team that will post a winning record. 1 On route to going undefeated ags League Champions at 15-0, the C-M wrestling squad won the league tourney, the N.Y. Tri Meet at Pavilion and came in second in the Ilion Tournament. With the majority of the squad returning next year, Cato will again be a dominant force in the OHSL South. Individual Achievements - Scott Congdon, County Champ at 105 lbs, Chris Serafini, Section III Champion at 120 lbs. 1 The team posted a winning season at 6-4. The girls have a lot of youth and can hope to better their record in the future. 1 Finishing out at 15-1, the Cato-Meridian Archery Team suffered its first loss in 30 years of competition. They were County Champions and placed second in Sectionals. Individual Achievements - Lisa Clarke, State Champion, Winner of the Gold Medal in the Empire State Games and TV5 Athlete of the Week. Brett Scheckler Placed second in the State Meet, Chad Sheckler andjack Giuffrida both qualified for the state meet. 1 Ending the season at 8-2, the team was Division Champs and advanced to the Sectionals, Losing only 4 seniors, they have a good chance to win the title again. I 1980 BASEBALL 1 Closing the season at 15-2, the team won the League Championship, then went on to win the county championship as well. Placing 4th in Sectional play, the team returns this year almost intact. 23
