This introduction to an alien language and culture also serves to whet an interest in the culture of his own country. This interest we call history. The study of western civilization deals in heritage, the relation of past action and problem to the present. A striking feature in the study of history at the tiniversity is the fact that the course is taught in order to make the stu- den think. Far from lfeing merely a memory course. the essay-type question is the true test of the students knowledge as he is required to analyze the cause-efllert relationships existing in our past. Thus. the education of the college student is begun in his preparatory years from every aspect of his cul- tural needs.
