The building served as school and convent as well. The school- rooms were situated on the first and second floors of the convent with the entrance on Seventh Street. For thir- ty-four years, school was conducted in the convent. St. Patrick's was the first school of parochial character in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania. tBelow is the first St. Patriclds Schooll In 1927, Father Edward L. Gatens planned the D Cardinal Dougherty paid a visit to Pottsville with the Sisters of St Joseph is faculty 9: 2 8 existence, Pottsville Catholic High School has served J 6547 ,fn ,gf 'QA 04 M ' ' v,,,Q:.a,.,..,.,,fZ ln 1881. Father Hugh Gallagher built a school, consisting of eleven classrooms. at Seventh Street and Howard Avenue. In 1884, the Sisters standardized their school. It was di- vided into twelve grades. The old house was then used exclusively as a convent. Father Edward Gatens built an addition to the front of the convent in 1927. The Sisters lived here until January, 1950, when the new convent at 825 Nlaliantongo Street was built by Nlonsignor Joseph Nlccaflrey. The original building is still in use. It houses the library and a sophomore home room. Nlusic and journalism classes and scout activities also are conducted here. BOYLE, V.F. Pastor of St. Patriclfs Church, Pottsville, Pa. Nlonsignor Boyle came to Pottsville Nlarch ll, 1953, in time to witness Potts- ville Catholic High triumph over St. Ann's, Lansford, to win the Anthracite Catholic League Championship. It was an auspicious beginning. Since his arriv- al, Monsignor has zealously promoted all parish, school, and civic programs. The new Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary High School, on Lawt0n's Hill, was one of his first interests. The school is now in course of construction. It is a dream fast becoming a reality.
