Schuylkill Counfy - Our Home Pottsville, the southern gateway to the Anthracite Region, was laid out in 1816 with Nlahantongo Street, an old Indian trail, as its center. Today, it is the center of Schuylkill County and is the hub of trade and commerce in the region. Nlining is the chief industry. The population is about 25,000. Surrounded by numerous small communities, Pottsville has a shopping population of between 110,000 and 125.000. Pottsville has 24 churches embracing a number of denominations, grammar schools, three Parochial Schools, a Junior High School, a City High School, and Pottsville Catholic High School. About 2,500 boys and girls, who maintain their residences here, graduate from High School and College each year. The area is 605 feet above sea level and sheltered by mountains on all sides. Pottsville escapes much of the severity of northeastern Pennsylvania winters and is blessed with plenty of sunshine. Lower Left: Something out of a hook? Well, it isn't. It is our own Echo Valley, one of the most picturesque spots in Schuylkill County. Lower Center: After school, Mary Queen of Peace Church is a familiar stopping place for many stu- dents. Upper Right: There'll be some changes made . . Lawton's Hill, overlooking Pottsville, stands ready and waiting for the new diocesan high school. Lower Right: The seniors invade Garfield Square, a fa- miliar Pottsville landmark! Bill Handges, Pat Brown, Bill Scheuer, Ann Hachman, Danny Horan, Linda Lopez, and lVlary Ste- phen are careful of traflic as they head back to the editorial room. 4 3
