I L' Proudly and devoutly we hail our religion. Hallahan may well boast of an excellent curriculum for its students. This, however, does not make her dis- tinctive: the fact that she was founded first for religion, and then for secular learning. does. Our students realize that if business and academic studies alone were desired, there are doubtless many institutions which could qualify. but they chose instead a school whose principles are based on religion and whose atmosphere is a Catholic one. Here, the girls are taught a philos- ophy which should permeate their everyday lives, making them richer and happier. In these days, when there is much incorrect thinking, Catholic philosophy is invaluable. Even when surrounded by bigotry and hate, the logical, Christian reasoner will not find it difficult to hold her own. The student trained in a Catholic institution will more easily recognize fallacy from truth. and will attribute to this business of living important significance. It is because of this conviction that Hallahan was founded: in adherence to such principles lies our greatest glory and highest privilege. Roman Catholic, established in 1890. was the first diocesan high school for boys in the United States. A little more than twenty years later Hallahan, the Catholic Girls' High School was founded in 1912. As such it 'became the nucleus for the other diocesan girls' high school in the vicinity of Philadelphia today. First year history covers the period of time from primitive man to the Middle Ages. This lesson gives to the students an appreciation for the ancient art and culture. lt's interesting-really! Delight in the new religion texts, The Way, The Truth and the Life, is being registered by freshman reader Elizabeth Aylmer and received enthusiastically by her classmates. Pictured in the foreground are: Margaret Kriebel, Eileen McCarthy. Nancy Inforzata, Barbara Iulieno, Noreen Lydon. Mary Mcllrdle. Freshmen are the newest comers to Hallahan and they bring with them vitality, new ideas, and determination to help their school rank as the finest in the land. The present freshman class consisting of eight hundred high spirited students will probably go down in history as one of its most coopera- tive classes. This custom of coming to school by trolley, of having six or seven different teachers, of studying French and Latin, of Wearing the coveted Hallahan uniform is all new and Wonderful to them. They have also made a significant contribution to the War effort of our school. ln sport activities the freshmen are not found lacking in ability to participate in class basketball and on hockey teams. ln the field of music the freshman orchestra stands out as a great achievement. On the honor roll may be found the names of many first year students, indicating that intelligence is the mainstay of the class of forty-seven. ln this year the freshmen who really have what it takes lay the foundation of a happy high school career. Our school motto Aptate Lampades Vestras applies to this class, for they keep trimmed their lamps. lfllf' jlfwdglflflelfl 645:55 0 , X N X NX if X G if ,X X N33 1 S w X X Y X X :XXX X, X X X X XXX 6 X IXXXX XXX15 A X XXXN-X XX, XX X w A X , WT X1- ' 1 XXX ki X XX 5-X it W X. Since Pan-American relations have been encouraged, l-lallahan lends her support by introducing Spanish. Our juniors have the choice of choosing Spanish l as an elective. Physics has been introduced even more recently than Spanish. Third year students who qualify are eligible for physics and also chemistry. Most of the girls taking the commercial course find their third year interesting because it is here that they take their first plunge into business subjects. A great deal depends upon how the junior progresses in stenography l. lf, at the end of this year, she has proved herself capable in the field, she may be advanced into the transcription course the next year. Another important event in the school life of a junior is junior Day. This day is especially set aside for the juniors and they sport their brown and gold emblems even more proudly than usual. lt is in this year also that students begin to look forward to the wearing of the coveted red and white. These juniors touch their toes as they cultivate grace and flexibility and store up an after- math of aches and pains. Now, more than ever before, when the need of physical fitness is so vital to our nation's future. Hallahan is straining all efforts to keep her students fit. The benefits received are very abundant. If effort counts. Gloria Lotierza in the front row and Marie Fitzpatrick and Marguerite Vicario should be among the top ranking pupils. x .SX'bxvs+,wx kxkxxkf-X . ,gf 2 q.fSev'f?5'SE'E'j?'w'gg1'g5f?4T?,.S,Nxwxwwxmmx :S fi gy. The last year at Hallahan brings a wider and more varied curriculum. The senior continues her Way along in either the academic or the commercial course. Her only required subjects are fourth year religion, apolegetics, and the further study of English grammar and literature. She usually perseveres in at least one languageflsatin, French or Spanish. And somehow she survives trigonometry, solid geometry or advanced algebra. The principles of good citizenship are taught her by the study ot national problemsg she may choose modern European history instead. Since science is so essential today a senior usually chooses either chemistry or physics. ll she is artistically inclined she may take vocational art or the newly added mechanical drawing. When she is musically inclined she will choose as her last major music. The senior may also be enrolled in the homemaking courses, food and clothing. Business classes are decidedly popular. Regina Mae Koob and Marie Carey, probable laboratory assistants in the em- ployment oi Uncle Sam, are preparing themselves to meet the demands ol industry after the world conflict is ended. The process of fractional distillation which they are demonstrating is used in the refining of petroleum and in the manufacturing of industrial alcohol and voaltile oils. Senior councilors Bernice Delany and Bernice Appel, eager for an opportunity to make our little sisters welcome to Hallahan, stop with them. The true spirit of l-lallahan is the theme of Freshmen Day. This day is characterized not by the old-time fashion of initiation, but by the welcoming of the newcomers into the school. The seniors played hostesses while the freshmen, the guests of this festival, made their first social bow. The seniors were re- splendent in red ribbons and much-written senior cards. The program displaying much talent, achieved several purposes. The Halla- han curriculum and tradition were attractively presented. The wide-eyed freshmen became acquainted with the various extra-curricular activities open for their participation, such as: basketball, hockey, swimming, and cheer- leading. Of importance, too, they met the Student Council. The program showed the ability of the art class who made their usual contribution of posters and stage effects. By the end of the day, the freshmen realized that they were part of l-lallahan. jre5Aman ag iff .jwlaffakan ag iff' Mary Santarelli. winner ot the Freshman Day prize. receives this stuffed Teddy Bear from Council Presi- dent Mary Strittmatter. Xlaerience or ,Mcforg ln these hectic days when the armies of every nation are pitted against each other for super- iority in the post-War World, the Student Gov-- ernment Association has the gigantic task of molding in its students a 'respect for authority and a sense of responsibility necessary to future citizens of democracy. Student partici- pation in school government was introduced into Hallahan in 1926. Ever since, it has been an inseparable part of the l-lallahan students' traditions. Through participation in school gov- ernment, students learn to recognize and dis- tinguish necessary qualifications for leadership and reliability through election of their officers. Student government also aids greatly the student officer because it gives her a very deep understanding of the problems of her fellow students. Student government is only a beginning, but if it is carried to its logical end, Catholic education may add more glory to its lustrous name. .sxgA1cjiTA'?m Mia! as if 54 I i 1 w Q A 'EN we Q 51 ' 4 X ' X xx Y v .1 F-:A ff It K Six I K, 5 1 3- 39 A? These girls are wearing the clothes which they themselves created. The students, who can model their own designs. feel more encouraged to put forth their best efforts for the perfection of the dress, hat, coat. apron, or whatever it may be. Ellen Mele, shown standing in the group picture, is wearing the ensemble which she made. Ellen is sur- rounded by Grace DiPietro, Catherine McGarrigle, Margaret Griffin, Mary Strigari, Anne Burke, and Iosephine Valloreo. The girls in the other pictures include: Teresa McCleary, Edna Smith, and Alberta Littel, who represent the seniors. ? FASHIII The Home Economics course includes such domestic arts as laundering, sewing, cleaning, and, of course, the way to a man's heart, cooking. In Hallahan, the students are given the opportunity and the actual experience of taking care of a model home. There are a living room where guests sometimes go, a dining room, a sewing room, kitchen, and laundry. All are fully furnished with modern luxuries and in the most convenient and comfortable way. Here, each girl taking the course is given full directions in the use of sewing machine, washing machine, ironing board, soap and water, broom and mop, pots, pans, and cook books. Every day each room is cleaned and put in perfect order by the students, The girls who are interested in sewing make many of their own clothes, such as their school blouses, dresses and gowns for different occasions, aprons and pinafores, and coats. N ere .96 fAe KOOL llfijlzerein Silver Sands is the official literary publication of 1-lallahan. lt first made its appearance in 1917 under the name of Annual, ln 1927, this was changed to Silver Sands and in 1931, it becomes a bi- annual publication, The literary edition is published in February, and it is open to students of all four years who wish to contribute. The book provides a medium through which the student can express her original ideas in features, short stories, poems or essays. A special feature of the book for the past two years has bee,n the use of photog- raphy to illustrate poems. This year, a photograph will also be used to illustrate a short story. The guest editorial of 1944, contributed by a former graduate, and the streamlining of the mid-year edition are likewise distinguishing marks of Silver Sands. The record book, in spite of difficulties imposed upon printing as a result of the war, has been able to maintain its high standards of telling life at Hallahan largely through pictures. Color, pep and the old Hallahan spirit live in the lively cheers and songs led by our snappy cheerleaders. As always, the Hallahan band adds its music and drills to these games. The support given by the mem- bers ot the faculty and the strong backing of the student body make the varsity feel that there is something to tight forftheir loyal rooters-Whom they cannot and will not let down. The fine basketball tradition started by Miss Catherine McPeak is now being carried on by Mrs. Margaret Daley Papieves, a former Hallahanite and once a brilliant player on the Hallahan varsity. Here's to still greater success! Coach Margaret Daley Papieves is caught giving last minute instructions before the start ot the game. Alma Heslin, Elaine Aubrey. and Mildred McNiit are all ears, listening attentively to what the coach is saying. Starting from left to right the varsity includes: Alma Heslin, lean Pettit, Clare McCrosson Dorothy Sheehan. Edna Carney. This hard-playing school had previously defeated West Catholicg Hallahan handed her her first defeat after six former victories. On March 17, Hallahan met West Catholic on the neutral Little Flower court, marking the first victory by West Catholic over I-lallahan in nine years. So ended the exciting basketball season of 1944.
