. . . Strengthens School Spirit We learn by doing. Hence, freshmen and sophomores learn the spirit of Hallahan through participation in its oppor- tunities. The war presented needs which called for special skills and sacrifice of leisure. Girls who like to knit plied busy needles in the making of afghans. The sale of stamps and bonds became a school project which reached its climax in the purchase of a bomber and its second peak in the month of April in the procurement of l34 jeeps. ln this effort to aid the war, sophomores and freshmen did a magnificent share. They took their places as representatives of their respective sections and improved their knowledge of student government. Alert and interested, they lost no opportunity to know their school better and to get the most from its advantages. The Easter retreat was an unprecedented experience for the freshmen. Many of the sophomores, in the annex for the preceding year, found the experience new and delightful. Socially, mentally, and spiritually the undergraduates grew-not like Topsy but in the spirit of their school. Pictured are Mary E. Shaughnesy. Mary T. C. Gallagher, and Catherine Tuccio. These girls are knitting an afghan which is designed to aid the war ettort. FRESHMAN REPRESENTATIVES' Top row: Margaret Boland. Anne Gallagher, Mary Marsh. Florence McTaggart.
