How fine a world this will be, how much profit will be realized from the experiences and heartaches ot the present war, how sound and sturdy will be the restored peace which must be maintained, will depend largely on the principles and motives of those who are to be the rebuilders. Since the present-day high school students are to be among these, it is im- perative that they prepare themselves fully for the mammoth task ahead. The Catholic high school girl is given solid principles upon which to build. She must learn these well and understand them thoroughly so that she can apply them to the problems confronting her. NY modern American high school provides a splendid course of study and extra-curricular activities such as de- bating, school publications, musical op- portunities, and a wide variety of sports. Here at Hallahan, however, along with an extensive curriculum as well as a varied activities program. is found the basic foundation of all these things-religion. The Catholic high school girl is trained so that when she receives her diploma on her graduation day, she should be able to make this world a better, happier place for her having lived in it. This is because she has been educated with a religious background in a Catholic school. In the ensuing pages of this book will be shown the Hallahan student both at work and at play, in serious and gay moods. Yet throughout, as the very core of her activity, will be found basic Catho- lic traini.ng. As the student or graduate reads this book, she will be reminded of the pleas- ures of happy days in school. Through this publication will be found many traces of the firm religious fibre that should fit a young woman for any career she chooses to elect. After graduation what? Much is to be done: grave problems must be faced and solved. The times are difficult, fraught with uncertainty and clouded by war. The Catholic graduate does not leave her school without having been fortified and enriched. Behind her economic, political, and social problems will be found a philosophy that will work if she is Catho- lic enough to make it work. , aw, 5 V 1 V L . nav vi? F55 This book is dedicated to those members of '43 who will have the courage to put into daily life the philosophy which this school has given them. It is a salute to those cou- rageous graduates who will wear their reli- gion as a shield before their hearts. It is a tribute to those who in that faith will help build the new world that the spirit and sacri- fice of America' is winning. To such among you this book is dedicated. May its memories grow dearer with the years and its lessons sustain and inspire you through the tests that lie ahead. At Nineteenth And Wood ALLAHAN is the oldest of the Philadelphia diocesan high schools for girls, but its spirit is young and vibrant. Founded in l9l2, it is the only one of the Catholic girls' high schools to have taken part in the activities imposed by the First World War. For the second time it has met generously the responsibilities and tasks of a national crisis and has yet endeavored to fit its students to serve the future. The light of our lamp, emblazoned upon our school seal, symbolizes the faith in which We trust. lt signifies also the light toward which the world looks, today as never before. ,gf wg f, Q if 'L ' I 'l J M' Qi ,i K ,- K . At first she is lost in the crowd in a new and bewildering place called high school. From the start, though, in spite of the difficulties of adjustment, she wants to belong. From the first day, too, teachers and the spirited students of her school stand ready, eager to show the newcomer the way to happy days at l-lallahan. 12 ,F , MS-'S vim Wim K l Q: va , M ga 1, 4 , rl , 8 K 7? f' if N-.L z N ir, 5 QLQTT 1 .: Q .... 55431 W E I s X I z I 1 5 , a A -'wwf W- 'Q ,... , Q mam os im.. hW,. .,,,,,M.. Monsignor's ability, foresight, and able leadership have made our alma mater one of the foremost edu- cational institutions of the present day in scho- lastic as Well as in cultural aspects. Monsignor is aided in his duties as admini- strator of the Catholic high schools and also in his position as Diocesan Superintendent of Schools by the very capable Reverend loseph G. Cox, I.C.D., and Reverend Ioseph A. Gor- ham, S.T.L. The faculty is composed of members of five different religious communities, all of which are highly proficient in the various departments of education which they teach. To our splendid administrators and devoted teachers is due in a large measure the Halla- han tradition of which each student is so proud. The duties ot Monsignor Bonner and his assistants are not limited to administrative activities. Be- cause of their interest in our spir- itualwell-beina, they take on other important tunctions as part ot their routine. ' 19 Even Freshmen This is the day when the seniors step out as big sisters. They are thrilled to think that they are the oldest in the school and the future graduates of l-lallahan. Hence, they take great pleasure in meeting and welcoming the fresh- men. On this occasion the first year girls are enter- tained by either song and dance or a movie. This year it happened to be an entertainment featuring senior talent. Throughout, the little freshmen looked on Wide-eyed and amazed at their big sisters' accomplishments. The play this year dealt chiefly with the use of the handbook. Mickey acted as an un- official guide for our younger classmates. He helped the freshmen learn more clearly, and Above lelt, we see Elizabeth Hastings. President of Student Council, welcoming two wide-eyed freshmen. who seem to be enioying it. The sale of stamps and bonds became a school project which reached its climax in the purchase of a bomber and its second peak in the month of April in the procurement of l34 jeeps. ln this effort to aid the war, sophomores and freshmen did a magnificent share. They took their places as representatives of their respective sections and improved their knowledge of student government. Alert and interested, they lost no opportunity to know their school better and to get the most from its advantages. The Easter retreat was an unprecedented experience for the freshmen. Many of the sophomores, in the annex for the preceding year, found the experience new and delightful. Socially, mentally, and spiritually the undergraduates grew-not like Topsy but in the spirit of their school. Pictured are Mary E. Shaughnesy. Mary T. C. Gallagher, and Catherine Tuccio. These girls are knitting an afghan which is designed to aid the war ettort. FRESHMAN REPRESENTATIVES' Top row: Margaret Boland. Anne Gallagher, Mary Marsh. Florence McTaggart. Irene Nagurny, and Antoinette Montone take advantage of the vocational art course, which is iust one among the many cultural advantages offered by Hallahan for training students for the future. One of the phases of Iunior Religion deals with the Protestant Revolt. Here. Edna Smith discusses at the blackboard the causes lor the Protestant Revolt and the weakening of the Catholic Faith as a result. Anne Kovac listens attentively to her fellow student. Dates. dates, dates, and more dates! American History is sometimes confusing. but yet very interesting. Alice Daly likes to remember her dates as does Mary Iane Ulseton. Many Iuniors consider history listed lirst among all favored subiects for its incomparable value. They provide students with an excellent opportunity to pursue their special interests in extra curricular activities. The presidents of the various clubs are versatile. Marie Naughton and Catherine Tones, chatr- man of the cafeteria and lockers respectively, are both blue ribbon girls and top ranking commercial students. Dorothy Hoepp has distinguished herself as the only sophomore in the group. Margaret Carroll is well known as Chief lustice, and as contributor to Silver Sands, as well as president of the Debate Club. She left in April to enroll for a junior engineering course at Drexel Institute. lane Matsinger is renowned for her vocal work ever since her freshman days and now is the outstanding senior in the Glee Club. Irene Tolosky is better known about Hallahan for her excellent art work, but is also noted as head of the mission promoters. Anne Logan is another blue ribbon club president. Eleanor Prender- gast, president of the Eucharistic promoters, is a notable contributor to school publications. Rita Di Fulgo needs no introduction. Only the fundamental orchestral instruments had been primarily employed, but, with the ever increasing flow of talent, the seed once planted, began to grow and finally blos- somed into the great orchestra we now have, complete with all required symphonic instruments. The enthusiastic spirit of the pioneer orchestra members has been carried through the years and is still a dominant factor in producing success- ful concerts. As a result of the efforts of the faculty of the music department and of the students, it has been possible to again hold a Second All-l-lallahan Concert, in addition to taking our part with the other diocesan Catholic girls' high schools in the annual music festival, held Monday, May third, in the Academy ot Music. In a world of blackouts, music is still a light for the spirit with power to guide and exalt. Mr. Felix Meyer has again won recognition and deserving laudations for the orchestra as well as for himself. During his two years with the orches- tra, Mr. Meyer has proved himself an efficient and capable conductor. First Violin Anna M. Nedzinskas Bernadette T. Pirhalla Milda P. Baltadonis Blanche M.
