The girls assumed new responsi- bilities and gave their whole-hearted support to the defense effort. Their Catholic principles and training made them ready for the sacri- fices and trials that must be faced by a nation at war. Their youth and splendid education are excellent foils for the difficulties that have arisen and are yet to come. The Seniors are praying and working for the ultimate victory that will be twice as great for them because they have faith in God cmd a glorious country. y .1:' John W. Here, we have the birthplace of the four God-given freedoms that every true American cherishes- freedom of worship, speech. press, and assembly. As Philadelphians, we see liberty always symbolized by our precious historic shrines. Inde- pendence Hall was the cradle from which our freedom grew and our Liberty Bell proclaimed the courageous declaration of American inde- pendence. Following tradition. Philadelphia continues to lead the struggle for man's- rights and her efforts will keep the torch of American liberty ailame. 7 ,. The education of the Catholic girl is not in the quest of knowledge alone. lt is inseparable from the belief that all learning should begin and end with God. This ideal was realized in l9l2, the vear in which the lohn W. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School was founded. Throughout the years it has re- rnained the incarnation of that ideal. lts first principal, the late Most Reverend Philip R. McDevitt, Bishop of Harrisburg, his successors, and our present super- intendent, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor lohn l. Bonner, have striven to make the school achieve the high purpose of its foundation. To assist the diocese in carrying out the tremendous task of Catholic high school education the West Philadelphia Catholic Girls' High was opened in l927. Catholic education continued to rnarch on in the opening of the Little Flower Catholic Girls' High in l939 and St. Huhert's Catholic Girls' High in l94l. if Prolnolers 0 RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR JOHN J. BONNER, D.D., LL.D. Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Since l926 the Right Reverend Monsignor Iohn I. Bonner, D.D., has super- intended I-lallahan with a burning zeal that glows more brightly With the years. His spirit of leadership and far-sighted vision of Catholic education have sought the best possible advantages for all under his direction. Nor is his courage daunted by the obstacles of War time. He has enabled Hallahan to adapt itself to the present crisis by fostering the ideal of self-sacrifice in each student. Because of Monsignor's untiring efforts in training the youth of today to be the unfalling citizens of tomorrow he is, First in war, first in peace, and first in the heart of each Hallahanitef' Basic Principles and Ideals Monsignor Bonner is ably assisted by two very efficient and capable associate superintendents, the Reverend Ioseph G. Cox, l.C.D., and Reverend Ioseph A. Gorham, S.T.L. To them too we owe a debt of gratitude. Their unselfish assistance has furthered the suc- cess of our school and its varied activities. In these branches of history the students learn iacts gathered about the world since man has kept tangible records, the way the United States has gained and kept its freedom. and the changes that have taken place in Europe recently. To the right Margaret Ryan shows the pupils facts in government. 'NNN The girls in our newswriting class are very interested in their work. They learn to make headlines, the differ- ence between a feature story and a news story. and also to read proofs and to read copy. They acquire knowledge of all that goes into the make-up of a good newspaper. Rita Swiit and Catherine Owens here decorate the bulletin board with pictures of Maurice Evans' in- terpretation oi Macbeth , Shakespeare's play studied by seniors. The editor of Silver Sands is Mary Dunphy, versatile poetess and writer, who has contributed generously to these publications. Margaret Kirby, Elizabeth Dougherty, Helen Decker, and Agnes Schneider prove how in- teresting proof reading can be in preparation of Silver Sands. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School offers excellent training to students interested in music. Since its organization, this department has grown in size as Well as in achieve- ment. This has been accomplished through the untiring Work of Well trained instructors, as well as the full cooperation of the students them- selves. The recitals which the orchestra gave this year include the partici- pation in the All-Hallahan musicale at Town Hall and the annual diocesan festival. Other concerts were given at Robin Hood Dell and at Qcean City. The great st compensation for the students' efforts is to have the curtain fall on a successful performance. After completing four years in this field the young musician has an admirable foundation for a musical career. 3 ,ww Rl . N. 'f ' .f L '. 'A x M 'N , , ff? wwf ,gg Va Q, Vi. ff,. W' 2 4? Till We lweel Again Class Day is a day dear to the heart of every senior. lt is the last one on which the senior class assembles to have an enjoyable chit- chat over a delightful luncheon. Here the pleasant memories of the last four years pass in retrospect. But between joyous laughs comes that indescribable feeling that tugs at the heart of friends about to part. The girls in the center picture give all indications of enjoying themselves. At the left, We find Elaine Maher, '42, and lane Matsinger, '43, rendering a duet, While at the right we see Muriel Ford, Hallahan's star ballerina. The faculty has come to join us in the happiness of this day. 1 ' Q cf Us ,W W f 92 Q fr if WYss 'HW if agar 'K ,, TM 'V' 5 aj' g aa 5 2' 3 JE mm lg fi '5' .gf mf'9'9 Ai J E y if x 0, V I ,. f 4 Q3 ,ig ii mf ,1 't lk s if V?
