Heart Of School Based On Religion As a Catholic school. Catholic High offers something to students that could never be experienced at any public school. These are two things that set us apart from them-mass and the day of recollection. Once a month, all 670 students gather in the gym in silence. This is no pep rally, assembly or guest speaker. This is our time to celebrate the Eucharist and to be in the presence of the Lord. Each month a guest priest, usually from one of the feeder schools is invited by Religion Department Chairperson. Mrs. Brouillette to celebrate the mass. We have had such honored guests as Father Baum of St. Thomas More, Father (Jter from St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Father Blanchard of Christ the King. Monsignor Frey from Our Lady of Mercy. Brother Will and of course. Bishop Stanley Ott. A different club is in charge of organizing the liturgy and supplying ministers of the word. The CHS Men’s Chorus enhances the ceremony with harmonic voices singing traditional music. The Key Club helps out by setting up and taking down the altar on each mass day. Even though we have to sacrifice for- ty seven minutes of class time once a month, everyone should agree that cele brating mass as a school community is worth it. Days of recollection accompany mass as elements of our spiritual lives at school. Days of recollection here at Catholic High are a very special time in the active, busy life of a CHS student. It gives each of us a chance to put everything in our life on hold for a day or at least a few hours of it. The day usually begins with a general class meeting where a talk is given on the purpose of the day of recollection and we are told what is going to happen during the course of the morning. We then break up into small groups of about ten people and discuss topics that are beneficial to the growth and development of our adolescent minds.” As Freshmen, we realized one astonishing fact teachers own blue jeans too! To think, all the time we thought those neckties and skirts were unremovable. It seems like the only things we wanted to talk about were girls, dating and sex. How about that?!! Those same teachers know about sex. too! When you get to be sophomores, you are a little more stable in your life as a high school student. You talk about different things like ... women, dating and sex! Now that most can drive by now, cars are thrown in there, too. Subjects like future plans and grades are touched upon, also. The next year is the Junior Day of Recollection. This year, the junior class was taken off of capus for the first time. We were taken to St. Charles in north Baton Rouge. There we enjoyed the beautiful church, lovely grounds and were given strict orders to stay away from the ducks! We discussed really important things like keeping our priorities in order and establishing and preserving a loving relationship with our friends, our parents and God. We tried to figure out what was important to us, then we were told what should be important to us. We ended our days of recollection with a mass and we all felt good about God. our life, and each other- for the rest of the week! However, for some, it lasted much, much longer. - '3ef'f LD • 11 vh s 12''Masses Father Baum celebrates the Eucharist.
