The preparations for Homecoming 1984 began long before the actual ceremonies and festivities took place. Everyone seemed to begin planning as soon as they realized that school had begun again - this enlightenment occured at some time between August and October, depending on the individual. There was a band to be found, ceremonies to organize, game strategies to memorize, and for everyone, the all-important question of whom to ask to the dance. Everything came to a climax at the end of October when Homecoming week finally arrived. The pep rally that kicked it off was a fantastic beginning. The fabulous performance by the Bruinettes, and a powerful rendition of “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by some of our very own Clash enthusiasts set the mood for the rest of the week. It is a great credit to us all that our team’s surprising loss in the game did not dampen our high spirits. We were fired up, and knew that there was more to Homecoming than just football. So, when Yvonne Frinasci was announced as Homecoming Queen for 1984, insanity was rampant in the stands. Caroline Chustz, Carolyn Croxton, Kelly Moran, and Scharye Vaughn were the other beauties vying for the crown. The dance the next Friday was (if possible) more rowdy than the game. Sneaux provided stimulus for gyration, and gyration there was on a grand scale. Yes, we danced! In the final analysis, though, it can still be said that Homecoming 1984 came together to celebrate, in the spirit of the day, that which makes Catholic High so dear to its students of days past. ----- piAQuenwc ABOVE: Corey Butler. Celebration Of Eucharist Is Important Part Of CHS Life This year at Catholic High we again observed monthly liturigal feasts in the gym. Father Dan Le-moine presided at masses celebrating Advent, Lent, and All Saints’ Day. On several occasions, such as Catholic Schools week, he was joined by Bishop Stanley Ott. Catholic High happily greeted Bishop Ott, who took time out of his busy schedule to come to CHS. The celebration of the Eucharist is an important part of Catholic life and Catholic High is pleased to be able to celebrate it as a school body. 16 OPPOSITE PAGE TOP: Patrick Hannie takes communion at the junior day of recollection. Variety Of Assemblies Add To CHS Life The Student Council sponsored various assemblies during the school year. Vice President Dan Dial arranged for two guest speakers to speak to the CHS student Body. Dale Brown, head coach of the LSU Basketball team, came to speak about how he grew up as a “defiant” high school student and his coaching career. Father Ken Roberts also came to speak about teenage problems, especially the great amount of materialism in the world. Other events also sponsored by the Student Council were the P.E. Basketball Intramurals and the Student Council Campaign Speeches. Also, The Massing of the Colors, associated with the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars, came to CHS on Washington’s Birthday. Various war veterans and Junior ROTC members from different schools attended the presentation. OPPOSITE PAGE. Seniors Experience Spiritual Growth During Retreat Senior retreat this year took place, as it has in years past, as a regular part of the senior school year. Though administrators took planning and logistical considerations as a matter of course, the event itself became quite unique for its participants. None of the seniors really knew what to expect at the beginning. Visions of monk-like posturing and enforced silence were all that some of the seniors could conjure of the approaching weekend. What we were treated to, however, was a beautifully unifying and personally rewarding retreat experience. The change was almost imperceptible, yet the difference magnificent. The teachers and authority figures became friends and confidants. The coaches and administrators became willing counselors. No longer were the seniors critiqued, censured, or made to fit the mold. They were provided the environment and encouragement to create their own mold, to define their own perspectives. It is now easier to see the purpose of that event for many seniors. Their retreat marked a new turn- a new milestone and cornerstone from which they began at once the Christian growth that is integral to the education which is so characteristic of Catholic High. It was at Senior retreat- away from the more typical and distracting indicators- that the seniors found the depth, maturity, and strength which told them, finally, that they had become, in every sense of the word, seniors. The site of the 1985 Senior prom was Ashley Manor which was perfect for the celebration. The band, Innovation, was very lively and creative. They kept the dance going with an excellent selection of songs. Following the dance most attended the after parties, which continued early into Sunday morning. The 1985 Senior prom was very successful and enjoyed by all thanks to its excellent organization. TOP: David Politz, Paul Pizzolato, and their dates enjoy the jam provided by Innovation. A Change In Location Accompanies The Change From Juniors To Seniors After an intermission of quite a number of years, the CHS Ring Ceremony once again returned to St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Only a few short days after the Seniors left for the fun and excitement in Florida, the Juniors of 85’ officially became the Seniors of 86’. The ceremony went on without a hitch and turned out to be a great success. The mass was opened with an introduction by Danny Keaton, the new Student Council President, and the first reading was read by Chad Landry, the NHS President. The Prayers of the Faithful were led by the Bearly Published Editor, Sonny Marks. The Symbolism of the ring was read by Scott Landry, the new Key Club President. Whether in sports, academics, or extracurricular, they exhibited great ability and spirit of determination that added a great demension to the Catholic High community. Rarely has such a promising group of scholars, sportsmen, and leaders been seen here as Juniors. Juniors had many interests — skate-boarding, listening to all types of music (from “oldies but goodies” to new-wave, with even some progressive jazz thrown in), and exploring every aspect of the “just plain new” as well as the avant-garde (in many different fields)! Led by Billy Soileau as president along with a fine group of officers the Council has provided the school with its numerous extra curricular activities throughout the year. The council began the year by painting the parking lot during the summer and selling parking permits. The next major project was the producing and selling of the football programs at all home games. The council the tackled the Homecoming festivities in October. Much work was done in preparation for the elections, the game and the dance. Each member contributed several hours of work towards the activities. The Council then began the holding season activities with the Thanksgiving food drive and, later, the Christmas Toy drive both of which were a great success. During spring the annual Volleyball game with the Academy was held along with a dance that included the latest videos along with the music. The year ended with the election of new officers and a new Council. Br. Carl did an excellent job in his last year as Student Council moderator, in guiding the Council to making this year one of the best its even had. 82 TOP LEFT: Brother Carl gives last minute instructions to the Student Council officers. KEY CLUB Busy Year For Key Club The 1984-85 Key Club kept itself very busy this year with its many projects. For example the graveyard cleanup, the LSU concessions, the faculty basketball, and the telethon projects. The Catholic High Key Club also attended District Convention, in New Orleans, where it placed in several categories. The Club was lead by president, Keith Comeaux; vice president, Chris Keaton; secretary, Danny Keaton; and treasurer Paul Waguespack. The officers for the 1984-85 year were as follows: President was Steve Atkinson, Vice President was Michael Achacoso and the Secretary-Treasurer was Steve Ehele. Some of the services to the school include the daily raising and lowering of the flag and the ministering of the Easter and Ascension Thursday masses. In lieu of service to the community, the Beta Club sponsored a blood donor drive for the Our Lady of the Lake Hospital which was very successful. The Beta Club had a doughnut sale and ran the concession stand at the basketball games to raise money. Every year Catholic High’s Beta Club attends the Louisiana Beta Club Convention and competes in several academic contests. This year Steve Atkinson placed first in Creative Writing and had his work published in the National Beta Newsletter. Also placing at State Convention was Greg Dole, who placed third in Social Studies. Overall, the Catholic High School Beta Club had one of its usual great years. In order to be a member, you must be a junior and maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. This grade point must be maintained through to graduation with a one semester probation. The NHS also does many other important services at Catholic High. They usher at all official functions such as the Golden Bear Ceremonies and Graduation. The NHS also offers tutoring to students who are recommended to them by teachers. They also have one fundraiser per year for the Golden Bear Awards. During Teacher Appreciation Week, the NHS usually gives something to each of the teachers. Also for the teachers, they supply treats during exams. Only a select number of schools have a National Honor Society, and Catholic High is definitely the better for it. TOP LEFT: Mrs. Kitchell’s favorite member, Greg Dole, presents her with flowers after the last meeting. They offer a very special service to the students. The Drama Club usually has two major productions per year. This year the two plays were Damn Yankees and Fiddler on the Hoof. Damn Yankees played from October 12-14, and Fiddler on the Roof played from March 8-10. The leads in Damn Yankees were played by Denise Boudreaux, Kelly McKinell, John Meyers, and Ana An-drecain. Fiddler on the Roof starred Andre Dubroc and Noell Borders. Both of these plays were superbly produced and acted. Over the years, the Drama Club has blessed Catholic High School’s students with many hours of pleasure and relaxation from the everyday strains of life, this year not being an exception. Needless to say, the Drama Club is an important club at Catholic High because it offers its students a very special service. By anyone’s measurement the club had a Golden year under the leadership of President Michael Acaldo and moderator Mrs. Wilson. The club continued to do it’s main responsibility which is the designing of the display case but it participated in many “firsts”. One of the “firsts” the Art Club participated in was landscaping the garden in the middle of the school yard. This is a project that the Art Club hopes to continue throughout the years. Another First for the club was the running of the concession stand to earn funds to donate to the school. The Art Club continued it’s service to the Public and Student Body during this school year. It sponsored the fourth annual Art Exhibit which gave students the chance to show their work. The quality and talents shown in the exhibit was the best ever. The Art Club also participated in the enables handicapped and disabled children the opportunity to participate in art activites. Another community service projects was Painting McDonald’s for the Christmas season. The Art Club in the 1984-85 year became a service organization and started a tradition of service oriented work. This year’s Art Club became one of the many active clubs on the CHS campus. The Art Club achieved it’s purpose this year by serving CHS as best it could. CENTER: A great guest speaker. Miller’s first year as band director. The leadership of President Vaughn Harmon, Vice-President Denise Plauche, Quater master Matt Haik, Co-Drum Captains Kevin Brian and Keith Primeaux, Secretary Collette Mathis, and librarian Harleigh Jones added to the success. The band was changed in many ways this year. This was the first year that CHS had a Jazz Band, and it was an amazing success. The many Awards earned by the Jazz Band proved this. At the Abbeville and Southeastern Jazz Festival, the band received the “Straight Ones,” the highest rating awarded at that festival. The Jazz Band also placed third at the Loyola University Jazz Festival. They played at various school functions, such as the Golden Bear Convocation and also “The Massing of the Colors.” The CHS Golden Band also had a banner year. Highlights of the year included performances at Football games, Homecoming, Pep Rallies, Convocations, and at Graduation. Led by senior editor Michael Achacoso, the Bearly Published combined old traditions with new, creative ideas to enhance the monthly eight-page issues. Assisting Michael on the staff were seniors Patrick Cronan (managing editor), Keith Comeaux (news editor), Paul Waguespack (feature editor), David Koch (sports editor), Lyndon Darensbourg (photography editor), John Graf (Business editor), and Bill Hack (distributing editor). Rounding out the press were numerous dedicated reporters, photographers, artists, and columnists. Complementing the news was Bearings, a literary supplement showcasing the creative talents of the students at CHS. It was edited by Chip Potter, and Mrs. Lucille McDowell served as Moderator. Moderated by Mrs. Jan Breen the Bearly Published, continued and will always continue to serve and inform the community of Catholic High School. TOP LEFT: The Bearing Staff at work. Small Bruin Staff Gets The Job Done The 1984-85 Bruin staff faced a formidable prob-lem-to produce a book better than last year’s. They began by attending the Yearbook Workshop held at the Bellemont in the summer. After this, it was on to collecting the funds necessary to publish the book. The money was raised through the sale of yearbooks to students and advertisements to merchants. Later in the year, the members of Bruin proceeded to actually do the work of drawing up the layouts, getting the pictures, and writing the copy. This year’s staff numbered little more than nine members, a small percentage of the usual number. The result of this was an increase in workloads on all members and a general failure to meet deadlines. The Photographers were also understaffed, with only two to take an estimated two thousand pictures. Despite these problems, the club charged onward and created a masterpiece. Members Learn How Computers Impact Their Lives At the end of the second year in the Computer Club, it was evident that many things had been accomplished. Not only was there an extensive spread of programming techniques, hut also the impact of the computer on today’s society was discussed. One of the major issues of the year was the widespread use of computer piracy, which is not allowed in the club. Many members left at the end of the year, not only having learned about computers, but also the way in which they affect everyday life. Under the leadership of Paul Darbonne, president, Stephen Ehele, vice-president, Jon Grantham, se-cretary treasurer, and Mrs. Michelet, moderator, the Computer Club was a popular success at Catholic High. The organization values the language and culture of the ancient Romans. It is the oldest Foreign Language Club at CHS, having completed its third year. The club was moderated for the first year by the new Latin teacher, Kathleen Murchison. Highlights of the year included the participation at the Latin Christmas Carol Service at LSU and at the Junior Classical League’s Louisiana State Convention, which was also at LSU. At convention, club members competed in academic contests, graphic arts, oratory, other contests, and the Olympic Games. CHS won several medals from both academic and athletic contests. CHEERLEADERS After Promising Start Squad Crippled With Injuries The 1984-85 season was a unique one for the CHS varsity football cheerleaders. After returning plenty of veterans the previous two years, the ’84 squad had only Larry Messina returning for the boys and Jean’ Roberts, Jane Atkison and Erin O’Connell for the girls, Rr. Harold returned as moderator. Larry and Jean’ were voted head cheerleaders. Trey Barnes, Richard Chamberlain, Bill Prochaska, David Desilva and Chris Valluzo filled out the squad for the boys and Ashley Richard, Scotty Rabb and Michelle Plaisance were the remaining girls. The squad appeared equal to the challenges facing them. After a series of intense practices the squad attended camp over the summer and received superior ratings. Then in the fall, they continued to work hard and enjoyed success at the beginning of the football season before a series of injuries crippled their efforts. All in all it was a great year. The Bruinettes, along with the Flag Corps and Band performed at every football game, and at each game they gave an outstanding half-time show, that was enjoyed by all. Under the direction of the senior Susan Toups, the squad had a very successful year. With many talented sophomore and junior Bruinettes, upcoming years promise to be good ones. The Flag Corps added color to the numerous pep rallies and half-time shows. The Flag Corps and Bruinettes enjoyed another successful year of entertaining the fans. The Mother’s Club begins the year with a coffee honoring Past Presidents of the club. They hold 5 meetings throughout the school year. At these meetings parents are given a chance to have conferences with teachers. The club also holds receptions for the Hall of Fame and the Golden Bear ceremonies. The Mother’s Club also helps the school financially. The club’s entire earnings for the past year was given to the completion of the Fine Arts Computer building. The club earned these funds through the club fair, a raffle, and a auction. The Mother’s club acts as a Mother in the CHS family. This mother cares about her children and about people. Without this Mother figure the CHS family could not grow and would be lost. TOP RIGHT: Wavne Rebelle attempts to ring the bell at the Mother’s Club Fair. Mothers Club 98 Men’s Club Membership Reaches All Time High When one is looking for an accurate description of an active organization at Catholic High the Men’s Club is the perfect definition. The CHS Men’s Club is one of the most important clubs on the CHS campus. With its all-time high paid membership of 1,720 the Men’s club touches every aspect of life at CHS. One of its major functions is the recognition of student acheivement. During the school year the club holds general meetings at which they honor student groups and their Dads. They also honor CHS athletes past and present by sponsoring the Grizzily Greats Reception and Sports Awards Reception. The Club annually holds a stag Barbecue which attracts over 2,000 men a year. It also sponsors the Fifty Year Reunion Supper, honoring the graduates of a half century ago. The Men’s Club helps the school financially with contributions to the Fine Arts Computer Center, the school’s academic program, the Band and the Football Program. The CHS family could not survive without the support of this most important club. It can be said that the CHS Men’s Club is a perfect example of how the CHS family can work together and be successful. Richard Chamberlain was editor of the Legislative Times, the official paper of the convention. In addition, he was chosen outstanding Press Delegate. David Toups received an award for the best article in the paper. Niels Gjerlov was named 4th runner-up for outstanding lobbyist. Finally, Trey Barnes was awarded 1st runner-up for outstanding House Statesman and later offered a $100 scholarship by the Industrial Management Council to help cover his expenses if he chose to attend the 1985 Blue Ridge conference on National Affairs in North Carolina. Throughout the year Chip Potter served as Chief Justice of the Judicial Program of Hi-Y, an office he was elected to last year. This gave the club a definite advantage in the election on 1985 officers at the Pre-Leg II seminar. Doug Gonzales was elected Judge from the Baton Rouge District and Charles Pecquet and Scott Landry were 1 of 5 attorney teams elected from the B.R. District. At the Legislative session itself, Senators Billy Soileau and Keith Comeaux got their bill passed both Houses and signed by Governor Lisa Melancon of SJA, and Representatives Trey Barnes and Bill Hack did the same. Trey Barnes served as President, Paul Belanger as Vice-Pres., Steve Atkinson as secretary, and Bill Hack served as Treasurer. Mrs. Clemont enjoyed her first year as moderator. They had an overall record of three wins and seven losses. Their district record was two and five. However, their few victories were sweet. The team defeated Broadmoor for the first time since 1976 and beat Woodlawn, a team that made the State Playoffs. CROSS The 1984-85 Varsity Cross-Country team made an awesome comeback from the previous season by winning their fifth consecutive district runner-up title. This made Catholic High’s number of state runners-up titles total to five. Their best meet of the season was the Catholic High Invitational, where the Bears placed second out of the 38 best cross-country teams in the state. The “Orange Wave” came within 13 points of state champion Baton Rouge High, and the meet gave them a good chance at becoming State Champions. Pat Cronan, John Norwood, and Jim Burke were named to the All Parish first team while Steve Atkinson and Brian Comeaux made the All-Parish second team. The Junior Varsity team had a tough season. The Bruins suffered a heart-breaking three point loss to Baton Rouge High in the city championships. With only three seniors returning to lead the team and a change in the coaching staff, the Bruins grapplers were a bit underated. It seemed these predictions would be fulfilled as assistant coaches and Brother Martain graduates, Tommy and Steve Messionier, struggled to organize the line up as well many weight-cutting problems among the wrestlers. The crucial, eye-opening, turning point came with victories over powerhouses Lee High and Tara after a heartbreak defeat to Redemptorist. It was proven that the CHS wrestlers had indeed turned the season around when they captured the City Tilte at Tara with several first and second place finishes by various wrestlers - among them, Francis Mayer and Fred Martain. They exhibited a near repeat performance at Regionals at Baker high to again place first. 124 Varsity Wrestling Scorebox 1984-85 CHS VARSITY WRESTERS Row 1: Jason Hernandez, John Zvonek, Fred Martin, Robert Hindmarch, Bill Prochaska, Toby Kormand. The first half of district play the Bears finished with a disappointing 2-5 record. In the second half of district the Bears came back storming and finished 5-2, and missed the district playoffs hy one game. Derick Anderson, MVP of the team, proved to be the motivator and provide the senior leadership for the team’s second half turn around. With only three seniors on the team the Bears lacked experience in crucial situations late in the game. This is the final season for the Bears in 6-AAA, next year they will move up to 6-AAAA. Under the guidance of Mr. John Molstad, the tennis team put their opponents far behind them as they won all of their team matches and lost only a total of four individual matches the entire season. These losses were taken in response to two challenging matches against the Brother Martin High crusaders team. The Bruins won the regional championship with 17 points with a maximum of six players qualifying for the state championship, which the team won with 14 points -one of the highest team totals ever recorded in the state championships. Roy Eudy repeated as State singles champ and the Catholic High doubles team consisting of Lopoo and Mike Gan defeated Catholic High’s other doubles team, Carey Gugliemo and Chris Crump. In the regular season, the track team came in either first or second in all of the seven meets before District. Led by Coach Pete Boudreaux, the track team regained their District title. The District Meet was clearly the most exciting meet of the season, in which CHS had a “sweet victory” over Zachary. The favored Broncos were upset by the underdog CHS by 111-88. At District, the crowd was very enthusiastic - probably one of the largest crowds in CHS track history — and this contributed to the 21 personal best performances made by the varsity track team. At the meet, some of the victories included Jim Burke’s mile and two-mile victories; John Gremillion’s 6’6” high jump (which was the school, stadium, and District record); Steve Atkinson’s victory in the pole vault; Mike Carleton’s 10.7 second 100 meter and 22.2 second 200 meter; and the first District victories for the CHS 800m and 400m relay teams since 1962. At Regionals, CHS placed third, and several CHS athletes almost qualified for state. Three athletes went to State, and CHS placed fifth at State. These athletes were Jim Burke, who had a personal record of 9:88.3 to win the two mile; John Gremillion, who won the high jump with a jump of 6’6”; and Steve Atkinson, who placed a hard earned second place victory in the pole vault with a 14’6” jump. Atkinson was the second best pole vaulter in CHS history, and the 400m and 800m relay teams were second and third best all-time, respectively. The Junior Varsity and Freshman Track teams also had superb seasons. The J V team of Coach Hood placed first in District (third consecutive year), and the Freshman team of Coach Randow placed second in District. 1985 C.H.S. GOLF Hard Work And Dedication Pave The Way To State Tournament Catholic High School had a veteran golf team this year composed of six seniors. The key to their success was consistancy. Each one of the six contributed to the teams success. Their hard work and dedication paid off in wins. Their record included eight victories, one second place, the City Golf Championship, a second place in the Regional Golf Tournament, which earned them a berth in the State Golf Championship. They ended the season on a high note by finishing third in the State Tournament. Even though the golf team is losing six seniors, the prospects look bright for next year with sophomores Damon Duhon, Craig DeJean, Robert Young, and Thomas Laville ready to fill their shoes. 1984-85 Golf Season Date Site Place February 28 Howell Park 1st f March 5 Webb Park lst i March 7 Webb Park 1st {■ March 12 Greenwood lst I March 14 Greenwood 2nd March 19 Howell Park lst k March 26 Webb Park lst | Tournament City lst A 1 Regional 2nd A J State 3rd OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP LEFT: Mike Holdereith watches an approach shot on the ninth hole. Starting with their orientation day, the freshman received the responsibility from the new principal on continuing the fine CHS tradition of academic excellence which has been left by the classes of the past. Nevertheless, these freshman displayed their excellence through academic and extracurricular activities. They were plagued with tests, exams, essays, and reports; yet, they also discovered their talents in athletics and school clubs. Thus, the freshman have a bright future of excellence in store for them in the next three years. It starts with beef, of course. Two lean 100% pure domestic beef patties, including chuck, round and sirloin. Then there's McDonald's special sauce, the unique blend of mayonnaise, herbs, spices and sweet pickle relish. Next come the fresh lettuce, golden cheese, dill pickles and chopped onion. And last, but far from least, a freshly toasted, sesame seed bun. All these good things add up to the one and only taste of a great Big Mac. Quality you can taste. And trust. Good Luck Seniors ! As I look back I will be able to enjoy the memories of my association with CHS. Most of these memories will come from this year’s Bruin, a yearbook which has its own individual qualities. Each year the qualities change, and I hope that the staff and myself have done our job to present these qualities in a unique book representing the 1985 school year. I would like to give a very special thanks to the faculty, staff, and students for making my job easier with all the cooperation I received from them. Also, I would like to thank Mrs. Susan Saale, the yearbook moderator, for helping myself and the staff when we were in dire need of help. Without Vincent Saffiotti we would never have the unique design of this year’s Bruin. Thanks to Darrin Rivault, Peter Austin, Rivers Wall, Ken Achacoso, Mike Acaldo Vinne Shortess, Billy Soileau, and Kurt Graves. With Mrs. Jan Breen as the new photography moderator, all the pictures were superb, she did a marvelous job along with Lyndon Darens-bourg, Patrick Wilder, and Micheal’s Photography. My'deepest appreciation to all the non-members who spent their valuable time helping the staff, thank you very much. A tremendous thanks to David Pope. Without David the 1985 Bruin would have never been completed on time. He was not a member of the staff, but he came early in the mornings for weeks during the summer to help write the closing copy. One good thing comes with the end of my Catholic High School education, and that is my future. I know with the CHS experience and tradition my future hopefully will be promising. And my sincere regardes to next years staff. KEN ZITO EDITOR BROTHERS' COPY THIS COPY OF THE C.H.S. YEARBOOK IS NOT TO BE REMOVED FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE BROTHERS' RESIDENCE AT 855 HEARTHSTONE DRIVE.
