Catholic High School 1982 Bruin Volume 35 Hal Bahlinger, Editor Mr. Pete Boudreaux Dedication The 1981-82 Bruin staff proudly dedicates this thirty-fifth edition to Coach Pete Boudreaux for his outstanding leadership and contribution to Catholic High. Pete Boudreaux, a 1959 C.H.S. graduate, came to our school in 1966 after finishing L.S.U. on a full four-year track scholarship. He received his Bachelor’s degree in physical education and his Master’s degree in education. During his years at Catholic High, Coach Boudreaux has served as the president of the Louisiana High School Track Association, the Louisiana High School Athletic Coaches Association, and the E.B.R. parish Track Coaches Association. He was voted Coach of the Year by Louisiana crosscountry coaches for three years in a row, 1976-1978, and was voted District Coach for the Year over a nine state area. Since coming to C.H.S. in 1966, Coach Boudreaux has taught Social Studies and P.E., coached football and basketball for seven years, and led the cross-country and track teams to six consecutive state championships (1974-79). He currently serves as guidance counselor and athletic director at C.H.S. 3 Table of Contents Campus 13 Heralds 19 Seniors 37 Classes 65 Homecoming 99 Sports 107 Clubs 141 Honors 181 Sponsors 193 5 sophy at C.H.S. is directed toward growing raditional first Friday mass reminds us that we the sou! as well as the mind and body. 7 Extracurricular activities allow us to grow beyond the limitations of classroom and playing field. The experience gained through these activities helps us grow more independent. 8 m 9 The four years spent at Catholic High arc the most important years of our lives. They arc spent growing holier, wiser, stronger, and more independent. We enter as mere youths and leave as Catholic High graduates: men and leaders. Campus C H S c H S 13 CHS Campus Continues to Grow Catholic High School was first located in Baton Rouge in 1894, though, in those days, it was known as St. Vincent’s Academy. It was first known as Catholic High in 1929. Twenty-eight years later, in 1957, the school was moved to its present location on Hearthstone Drive and Claycut Road. The school, at this time, consisted of the main building only. In 1963, the school gymnasium was added. In 1971, the R.F. Cangclosi Memorial Mall was constructed, joining the gym and the main building. A whole new wing, consisting of additional classrooms, a library, and a student union, was added in 1973 due to the rapid growth of the school. Recently, in the spring of 1980. the main building was finally air-conditioned totally. This was done with the support of both the Men's Club and the Mother's Club. And in September of 1981, the latest addition to the school campus was constructed. A new. all-weather track and football field was built. Also, a new baseball diamond and additional parking places were added. 16 17 Campus Heralds C H S A Great Administration Leads to a Great School Another successful school year at CHS was completed with Brother Ronald Talbot, S.C. as principal. Brother was assisted by a dedicated and qualified administrative staff. Brother John Abate, S.C. was a new face around school. He came to CHS from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans and became our new disciplinarian. Mr. John Molstad served as Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs, while Brother Will McCuc, S.C. and Miss Phyllis DiVincenti continued in their positions of Campus Minister and Coordinator of Student Activities, respectively. Secretaries Mahalia Bynum, Kaye Douget, Pat Hanegan, and Jan Jennings typed memos, attendance reports, newsletters, calendars and more, in addition to their other duties. Mrs. Guidry and Mrs. Barber kept busy balancing the books, keeping records of the various clubs’ financial transactions, selling tickets and setting up coin boxes. In addition to their other responsibilities. Director of Development, Brother Donnan Berry, S.C., and Athletic Director, Pete Boudreaux, had the rewarding task of overseeing the finishing touches and completion of the Catholic High School track facility. The entire school community worked together to see this project become a reality. ABOVE: Mrs. Kaye Douget Registrar, Attendance. The results of their work were witnessed by the students when they entered the immaculately cleaned cafeteria in search of breakfast. Mrs. Mary Lou James, her workers, and volunteer mothers all helped to prepare breakfast, snacks and lunch for the students to devour during the day. Brother Ramon, assisted by Richard Gaudin and Paul Selleck, busied themselves with the chores of maintaining the campus. When they needed additional help they drafted some of those students invited to Saturday school. Hours of their time were spent in preparation that made our classes interesting and meaningful. In addition to their teaching assignments, many faculty members served as moderator of a club in order to promote our extracurricular program, and the coaches spent countless hours to ensure that our athletic program was the best. A group of teachers even found time to beat the seniors in a challenging game of basketball. This fine faculty upheld the high standards that have made Catholic High what it is today and will be for years to come. TOP: Mrs. Althea Ashe Latin CENTER: Mr. Mitch Billing English II. There was always something exciting happening to keep up the pace — freshman week, senior retreat, homecoming, mid-term exams, the basketball state playoffs, the prom, and, finally, graduation. Many seniors were honored over the course of the year. Will Bcvcn, Bernic Corripio, John Dugas, Paul Moret, and John Wickson were named National Merit scmifinalists early in the year. In addition, Steve Antrobus and Brian Zielinski were commended by the National Merit program. John Wickson was the recipient of the NCTE Achievement Award in Writing, and John Dugas was named the winner of the local Century III Award. Mike Ferachi was elected Hi-Y Youth Governor of Louisiana. Among those projects were two car washes, a graveyard clean-up job, and selling concessions at a basketball game. April 17th finally rolled around, and the dance floor was filled with music from the band “Sparkle.” The prom, which began at 9:00, was held at Ashley Manor on Old Hammond Highway. In the classroom, the juniors excelled in their work, but at places such as football games, basketball games and dances, this proud class showed that there is more to being a CHS student than going to class. Not only did the juniors back up the teams every chance they could, they also participated as members of the teams. iMany juniors also found time to take an active part in extra-curricular activities at CHS. Although they faced a tough schedule, the juniors completed the year successfully and look forward to a spirited senior year. The spirit and support generated by their cheers and screams attributed to the winning effort displayed by the teams. The moderator of the boosters was Mrs. Diane Duncan. About 60% of the Academy’s freshmen took part in this cheering group. This excessive number of members forced the boosters to split up into a football squad, led by Sonya Hagan and Emily LeBlanc, and a basketball squad, led by Ava Bryan and Caroline Shutz. Probably the least publicized addition was a copper wire extending from the Brothers’ Residence to a window in Room 100 which served as the antenna for the Radio Club. The Radio Club prepared its members for the written exam and Morse Code requirements of the General Class Radio Amateur License test which is given in New Orleans by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The seven members of the cast worked over the summer to start off the year in comic relief. The show was also presented at the SJA Mission Day later in the year. At Halloween, the Drama Club darkened the stage with “Dracula.” The performance was the first of the CHS-SJA Drama Club productions to be held in the SJA gym. In the late winter, the Drama Club warmed your hearts with the musical-comedy, “South Pacific. Because of the preceding popularity of the Drama Club, the show was legally paid for before the matinee on Sunday. This was a first for the club.
