The fervid vitality of REVEREND T. AUSTIN MURPHY, Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, proves an incentive to progress in the field of education. By his interest and support, the Bishop encouurages all plans and facets of scholastic achievement. Vigilant leadership safeguards MONSIGNOR JAMES C. DONOHUE, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Baltimore, executes his commission of management and supervision with skill and integrity. This year he has placed particular emphasis on scholastic growth through revamped courses.

On January 25, 1965, Lawrence Joseph Shehan, Archibishop of Baltimore, was elevated to the status of the cardinalate. Preceded only by James Cardinal Gibbons, he is the second native Baltimorean to become a prince of the Church and was the sole American among the twenty-seven named by Pope Paul VI. Shy by nature he feels that The honor would not have come to me if there were not approval of my work in racial justice and Christian unity, Under his direction, numerous anti-discrimination measures have been effected in the archdiocese and efforts toward Christian unity have been accelerated. In addition to archdiocesan duties, he was elected by the American bishops to organize a national commission on Christian unity in conjunction with the National Catholic Welfare Coun- cil. Since his return to Baltimore after reception of the red hat, Cardinal Shehan has looked towards further fulfilling his motto All things in Charity. 9

Assistant Superintendent of Schools, FATHER MANUEL R. ROMAN, cooperates daily with Monsignor Donohue in carrying out the charges of his office. Supporting ideas, implementing newly-enacted regulations, and overseeing the completion of official projects necessitates the skill which Father Roman regu- larly employs. A welcome addition to the Department of Education is MR. SAMUEL J. CRIMY, recently-appointed Superintendent of Sec- ondary Schools in Baltimore. Mr. Crimy, an ardent and capable director, has made the establishment of a strong liaison between lay teachers and the archidiocese his initial project. educational vitality.
