Exchanging commendations Cardinal Shehan and fellow cardinals-designate await the arrival of Papal messengers bearing the biglietto, a document pro- claiming the acceptance of the new members into the Sacred College by the cardinals already so privileged. (Picture courtesy of Baltimore Catholic Review) Scanning the skyline Cardinal Shehan poses atop the North American College overlooking the city of Rome. During his stay in the Eternal City the cardinal resided at the college and based many of his activities and receptions there. (Picture cour- tesy of Baltimore Catholic Review') The oath of obedience is one of the prominent features of the public consistory where Baltimore's Archbishop Shehan was received into the Collego of Cardinals. Due to a change in the colorful ceremony, recently revised by Pope Paul, the red cardinal's biretta instead of the flat wide- brimmed galero was presented. (Picture courtesy of World Wide Photos) May the blessing of Al- mighty God . . . descend upon you. . . Newly ele- vated Cardinal Shehan joins with Pope Paul in bestow- ing a blessing. His election to the Sacred College now entitles the cardinal to all the privileges of that group, chief of which is the elec- tion of the pope. (Picture courtesy of Baltimore Catho- lic Review) ►

Meeting the press Cardinal-designate Shehan comments on his eleva- tion to the Sacred College. At the press conference held on January 26, the day of the official announcement, the Cardinal claims this honor not only for himself but also for all the people of Baltimore. (Picture courtesy of Baltimore Catholic Review) Shepherd of Baltimore: Prince of the Church Happy the man You choose and bring to dwell in Your court. May he be filled with the good things of Your house, the holy things of Your temple. On January 25, 1965, Lawrence Joseph Shehan, Archibishop of Baltimore, was elevated to the status of the cardinalate. Preceded only by James Cardinal Gibbons, he is the second native Baltimorean to become a prince of the Church and was the sole American among the twenty-seven named by Pope Paul VI. Shy by nature he feels that The honor would not have come to me if there were not approval of my work in racial justice and Christian unity, Under his direction, numerous anti-discrimination measures have been effected in the archdiocese and efforts toward Christian unity have been accelerated. In addition to archdiocesan duties, he was elected by the American bishops to organize a national commission on Christian unity in conjunction with the National Catholic Welfare Coun- cil. Since his return to Baltimore after reception of the red hat, Cardinal Shehan has looked towards further fulfilling his motto All things in Charity. 9
