THIS ONE IS iambic tetrameterf' decide English I stu- dents Margie Reeb, Billy Glaser, and Jean Dettenwanger, scanning the poem, Stars . What's this? A do-it-yourself English kit? That's right. The do-it-yourself craze hit the English department as teachers and students cooperated in constructing a cultural and edu- cational background. Working on parts of speech and composition, classes, from freshmen through senior, entered essay and poetry contests and still found time for enioying masterpieces of English and Ameri- can literature. From Romance Did you notice? My hair stood straight up! remarked one freshman after school. Frosh found exciting adventure stories among 'cena , olaoaeam, iecwez eckm other romantic treasures in English l classes. Sophs discovered the realistic side of life as they studied Silas Marner and Julius Caesar. To Reality By day the skyscraper looms in the smoke and has a soul . . . wrote Carl Sandburg, a favorite of iunior English students. They found he voiced the spirit of the twentieth century America as truly as did Cooper of the pioneers and lndians. Boil and bubble . . . cackled witches as seniors reveled in Shakespeare's Macbeth. Climax of three years of literature was the study of Literature and Life in England. Seniors read prose and poetry from Anglo- Saxon Beowulf through Chaucer of Merrie England, to Masefield and Noyes of modern Britain. ET TU BRUTE, exclaimed dying Dick Uulius Coesarl Foster, as Senators Richard Aldridge, Mike Donohue, John Lonsway, Tom McNeil, and Jim Hart, dramatizing Shakespeare's classic Caesar, contemplated their awful deed.
